You're right, after some additional testing I figured out that I made them too op in campaign. I removed their buffs from "Emperor's Finest" to not completely replace swordsmen as melee variant.

Free company, imo, is actually much better than you think. I prefer free company over swordsmen anyday. They are just not good against midrange+ units. Ofc with that pricetag they shouldn't be very good. In numbers I feel that they can do more than one expects.
