Exciting news! There are some new variables in config.cfg that allow moving and rotating the advisor without needing an external mod.
r_manual_stereo_ui variables now include pitch, yaw, x, y, and distance. (The ones ending in _game modify the in-game UI elements.)

I have finally gotten around to updating this mod however since I did some more in depth changes, I have uploaded as a new mod rather than update this one:

Better VR Route Adviser

Noted that it is not ideal during the day until I add the background layers however it should generally be fit for purpose until I get that ironed out. For now I would like to work on this current event and not stare at the .sii file anymore.

Hey nice one! Thanks for the help on that. I had not considered that angle or explored all the folders. I will try and rearrange all the elements and have it at the top as a double line of info and the map on the right (or maybe the middle with info on either side) until I can figure out how to scale the map smaller slightly. Should be slightly more immersive that way. I will try to spend some time on the weekend working on this because I want to get the current event done and I'm keen to use that time to also test the mod. Thanks again for looking into that and giving feedback.

Alright, so the v1.41 is loading the multiplayer version of that file. Inside ui folder we need a multiplayer folder with the multiplayer files. This is the structure that worked for me:
-- ui
---- adviser.sii
---- adviser_oculus.sii
---- multiplayer (folder)
------ multiplayer_adviser.sii
------ multiplayer_adviser_oculus.sii
Changes on non-multiplayer files seems to have no effect in-game. I copied the contents of multiplayer_adviser.sii to multiplayer_adviser_oculus.sii and the adviser moved to the right. Still far from an ideal place for me to be honest as it stays in kind of right-middle, I would want it on right-down. With the recommended changes on config.cfg adviser sits on right-top-ish.
Yay I guess!

It could be something as simple as perhaps all of the 'ui' files must be in the mods 'ui' folder for it to read from them, otherwise it reverts back to the 'ui' folder from base.scs. The previous mod I could just change the adviser_oculus.sii file and zip it in 'ui' then use it as a mod and it would then use that file rather than the one from base.scs. It might be worth trying to include the entire contents of 'ui' in the mod, so all the .sii files regardless of whether they are changing or not, change only the oculus one and then zip it up and see if that works.

Probably the easiest thing is to download an existing UI mod for flatscreen, extract it and see how they have done it and try to replicate the process with the oculus sii file. I'm really surprised there aren't many VR UI mods considering there are clearly several flatscreen ones that really make nice adjustments to the adviser.

Oh, and the new adviser_oculus.sii and adviser.sii seems to be a tad different from the one used to create the mod, with a section in the very end been different/removed. The 1.41 files (adviser_oculus.sii and adviser.sii) are the same apart from coordinates values. Cheers!

And now I appreciate even more the heroes of mods!

Thanks again for the info.

I tried a handful of stuff and could not get one single change to happen to the adviser. I even tried deleting the whole file content expecting it to crash in some way, but nah, it keeps showing up in the same position for both oculus (adviser_oculus.sii) and non-oculus (adviser.sii) mode. I know mods are working because I turned one of them on and off, and I saw the change in-game. Oh, and I tested with only this mod turned on, so I don't think there was any interference.

When you have time mate, I'd start with making sure the game is loading the file from the mod's folder and not from the base.scs. For me it seems to ignore the mod completely. But I'm new to this, I could be mistaken of course.

That is an interesting point about changing the config file settings, I had not done that last night, simply trying to modify the adviser_oculus.sii file. The *.sii files you will need to extract the base.scs file to see them. See: https://forum.scssoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=190685 or just search for 'base.scs extractor'. Then you can extract any of the *.scs files and can read all the *.sii files in notepad (though I prefer notepad++ as it is a bit more feature rich).

I will have to put some time aside to look into this so a solution will not be immediate, I have not had much time to play the game in the past few months let alone work on the mod and now apparently problem solve the slight changes to how it works with 1.41. I will see what I can do though as it is just awful when the adviser is right in the middle of the screen.

If you change the settings on config.cfg as explained in the description the adviser moves out of the way and to the top. Better but not awesome as it would be in the side of the view.

I'm trying a couple of display changes to see if I can get used to VR on ATS and ETS and this mod would be a life changer. I tried it on v1.41 and it didn't work as @Senneker mentioned.

Fortunately the author (thanks heaps mate) explain how the mod works in the description so I went on the search for that adviser.sii. There is no adviser.sii file on my system. I then found two adviser_oculus.sii that happens to be one for ATS and one for ETS. On those files I picked a specific string "advisor.area" and I searched for that string in all *.sii files, and found nothing. I've been searching "advisor.area" on my whole system and found nothing interesting yet. Apparently there is no adviser.sii that we can copy from on v1.41, I wonder if it would work to use adviser.sii from v1.40 as base. If anyone has access to that file it would be a good try.

Annoying, indeed it doesn't seem to work with 1.41 I suppose because of the changes to the route adviser, perhaps the location of the .sii files have changed slightly. I will have to look into it further. Unfortunately I've not been playing at all since before 1.41 released so I was unaware of this. Many apologies.

No rush, but always appreciated

Odd, I have not tried this with 1.41, I will look into it when I get the chance.
Senneker Jul 25, 2021 @ 11:07am
Is anyone else having trouble getting this mod working with 1.41?
