it works but its odd when it wants to work...
Only way ive found is after using Wormhole...
Also found it works after Soul Echo(teleport) skill use via this mod below

Garden Digamajig does not work when the mod is on.

it is a great mod ,but it won't work in a world with cave,and will crash if you try to go down.
i hope u can fix it,thank you.

Its a really good mod, i love it.

BUT!

It affects you from farming (as in you can't place the tool to dig a farming soil), and it takes awhile to activate. but i'm really sad cuz i really love it.

But its understandable, it hasn't been updated all this while. RIP to my favourite mod...

dose not work with the cave mod. it will crash it but over all SUPER useful.

Sometimes it goes automatically, sometimes it makes me get on a boat first before activating. But it does work. Super useful for running away from swarms and filling out the map.

Downside is you will get the gospel music and Jesus overlay for the whole time you're on the water, so you won't be able to see yourself and what you're doing. The music does wear on you, but you can always just turn off your sound.

Also, sometimes your items will get wet right away, after quite some time on the water or not at all. Just a thing that can occur, I suppose.

If you kill or mine something on the water (like a sea monster or salt), it will typically fall into the water instead of floating, so I wouldn't recommend it. Can gather kelp with no issue, though.
