First, decompile any trees you want replaced.

Then, go into the .qc files for the trees you want to replace, and replace the $bodygroup file with an smd you've edited. Usually I'll edit 2 or 3 smd files and use them randomly to break up the monotony.

Recompile, check over your work in game, and fix any issues you find unsightly.

Fair. It's mostly a cosmetic mod. Though I rank it quite highly in terms of enjoyability.

The trunks are much skinnier, but the collision boxes remain the same (obviously), so it makes you think that you can walk through an opening in the trees, but you run smack dab into the original tree's collision! Solely for this reason, it isn't a very enjoyable mod.

Would do very nicely when there are mods that brighten up the tone of campaign maps and the trees are still a rather dull-looking muted green.

No. This replaces specific props that are used in various maps.
If there's some kind of scripting that would make what you're asking for possible, I wouldn't be surprised, but I don't have the time or interest to persue it.
