Often times, it's because the male survivor's personality lines up with the personality of the female character.
It can also sometimes be for the sake of a themed set of addons.

At least that's my theory.

ok i like this and all but why do people keep replacing male survivors with female characters. it's so freaking annoying. i don't know if people are smart or dumb. male characters for male survivors and female characters for female survivors
