No specific purpose other then being a landmark and giving players a different surface to play on, build bases or use it in other ways they might come up with.
It's just part of the Freespace flavour at this point.

I FOUND THE EASTER EGG!!!!
If you go on the chimney of one of the houses by the lake and press E on the chimney top, a pony will appear in the distance
