Introduction. What are Private Ranks?

The Private Rank was introduced with the Bloodhound Operation Update on May 27th, 2015. It enables the player to grind a rank and earn an insignia to show off to your friends as Valve puts it.
It has nothing to do with your Matchmaking Rank. It is based solely on the amount of XP you earned and thereby on the time you invested in playing the game. You cannot rank down on your Profile Rank.

The Private Rank of 2 or higher is needed to play Competitive matchmaking. Also, a Private Rank of 21 or higher is needed for Prime Account Matchmaking.

Service Medals

The Service Medal is your reward for reaching the highest private rank. When you reach the last private rank 40 (Global General), you have the option to reset your rank and start again from private rank 1. By doing this, you will receive a Service Medal. Every December 31st, a new Service Medal is released.

How to upgrade your Private Rank and earn XP

You upgrade your Private Rank by earning XP. For every 5000 XP you earn you will rank up a level. You will earn XP by playing on official servers or by submitting accurate Overwatch verdicts.

The amount of XP you earn:

Competitive = (rounds won) x30
Premier = (rounds won) x30
Wingman = (rounds won) x15
Casual = score x4
Demolition = score x2.5
Arms race = score x1
Deathmatch = score x0.2
Danger Zone = depends on several factors
Guardian = depends on several factors

Examples:

You won a Competitive match with the result 16:11. It means 16 × 30 = 480, so you receive 480 xp.

You lost a Competitive match with the result 8:16. It means 8 × 30 = 240, so you receive 240 xp.

You won Wingman match with the result 9:2. It means 9 × 15 = 135, so you receive 135 xp.

You finished Deathmatch with a score of 365. It means 365 × 0.2 = 73, so you receive 73 xp.

XP bonuses and penalties

Weekly XP Bonus

The weekly bonus XP is a pool of 5,000 XP applied as a bonus when a player finishes a round. The first 3,500 XP is awarded as a bonus of 3x the amount of XP the player gains in the round. The rest 1,500 XP is awarded as a 1x bonus. The bonus XP is not awarded further if all 5,000 were awarded during a week.

Weekly XP reset:
Wednesday at 2 AM CET (Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Prague, Bratislava)
Tuesday at 8 PM EST (New York, Washington, Boston)
Tuesday at 5 PM PST (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland)

Bonus Rank

This item grants you +5000 XP bonus (1 Rank) when used. It does not consume your weekly XP bonus boost and will not affect your weekly item drop eligibility.

XP Overload

If the player earns too much XP during a week, the player will receive a reduced multiplier, drastically cutting the amount of XP received regardless of game mode.
XP Overload status is awarded to players who have earned all of their normal XP during the week (11,166 XP) and reached reduced XP gain. XP Overload status is attached to players' names in scoreboard, main menu, death notices, etc. XP Overload status is awarded for a minimum of one week.

Overwatch XP reward

An Overwatch Investigator who successfully confirmed the guilt of a suspect player will gain an Overwatch XP Reward. It will be first notified to the player on the main menu, and the Investigator will redeem the reward of 195 XP the next time they finish a match on an official server. The Weekly XP Bonus also applies to the Overwatch XP Reward.

Approximate gained XP	XP multiplier
Less than 4,500 XP	4.0 x gained XP (1x Earned XP + 3x Weekly XP Bonus)
Between 4,500 XP and 7,500 XP	2.0 x gained XP (1x Earned XP + 1x Weekly XP Bonus)
Between 7,500 XP and 11,200 XP	1.0 x gained XP (1x Earned XP, No Weekly XP Bonus)
Greater than 11,200 XP	0.175 x gained XP (0.175x Earned XP)
