Lore in The Paladin Universe (Out of date)
By Gwilwilethiel and 1 collaborators
BEFORE YOU READ: This hasn't been updated in like 3 years and I don't plan to update this, but I'll keep it up to look back at just 4 fun. I don't know how cannon everything still is, but I'm sure there is something else out there that's up to date

Herro there, i'm sure you were just going around the steam guides and happened to stumble across this guide. I'm sure the first word you saw was LORE. Yes, this is a lore "guide". In this guide you will find whatever our team (currently Snek and Average) can find on the back stories and speculations of the Paladin Champions. If there is anything we miss please put it in the comments. As more lore gets uncovered, the more progress we shall make. Plz r8 8/8 m8s and share it with ur pets, fiends, friends, family, partners, and Sneks. And don't forget to stay tuned for constant updates on the guide as we find/uncover more

PS: For some reason steam isn't letting me change the picture for the guide, until I can get it to work, enjoy a fan-made picture of Maeve.

PSS: All champs that I couldn't find much lore on will say COMING SOON. (If you know of any lore for the COMING SOON characters, please put it in the comments and we will put it in)

PSSS: If you're interested in joining our Lore team then come on down to the Lore of the Realm group to help on our everlasting quest for lore

NOTE: this is the unfinished version. This is to get feedback and additional lore people may know before finishing it
Overall
Lore in the Paladin universe exists EVERYWHERE. From card arts to small details in maps. Lore, in case you didn't know is:

Side Note: The champs are not in any particular order, I just listed them randomly. We will be putting credits and stuff at the end. So lets begin.

***NOTE*** Before we begin you need to know some crucial information
  • The place in which Paladins takes place is called Crosswinds Hold, you'll be seeing this word a lot in this
  • Many of these champions are not orginally from Crosswinds Hold, so be aware of that
  • More about the maps of Paladins will be explained in this "guide" too

Now you may begin :)
Fernando: The Self Proclaimed Knight
Ah, yes. The Self Proclaimed Knight.

It takes a special kind of man to appoint his own Knighthood, and Fernando is that man. Hailing from the golden cliffs of Sun Spire, Fernando travels to Crosswind Hold to spread word of his fame and glory. If there's a damsel in distress, Fernando is there

From that Statement: We can automatically notice Fernando is from some place called Sun Spire. And the reason he traveled to Crosswind Holds was to spread his fame, being that famous knight that saves damsels in distress.

So basically he wants to be famous and well-known. Not much needed to explain there. But one question that does arise in my mind is what kind of land was Sun Spire?

Well we know Fernando comes from some sort of Kingdom from his knightly wear, so by that logic, it must be some kind of kingdom. Also the description says: Hailing from the golden cliffs of Sun Spire. Key word: Golden

Golden can mean many things:
The one that made most sense was the third one, Prosperous and Happy. We can assume the Kingdom he was from was a prosperous and well known place for Fernando to be spreading his "fame" and glory.

Card Art:
There are 2 cards in particular I will be focusing on: Immovable Object and Last Stand

Ok so we know this card provides 7% more CC reduction. However, the thing I want you to focus in is that purple flag behind the dude. Notice how it's ripped up, meaning maybe Fernando's kingdom went to war with some other kingdom, and Fernando's team won.

Now I want you to see Ash's card Battlement:

Notice how there are purple flags around what we can assume is Ash's kingdom. And what kind of is in Fernando's card: A purple flag. This can possibly mean that they went to war (Ash's and Fernando's kingdoms) and Fernando's team emerging as victorious. (More will be explained in the Ash section)

Second card I wanted to mention was Last Stand. We don't really need to know what it does but what I do want you to notice is the symbol on the shield. What I'm about to put is the symbol on Lex's shoulder and for one of his legendary cards

As you can see the symbols are almost identical. After watching one of Joshino's lore videos introducing the idea of a justice organization (the symbol on lex) and after seeing the Fernando card, I starting thinking maybe there is some kind of order in the Realm. I also thought about the fact that Lex is a like a Cop, fighting for justice, and Fernando a knight, who also fights for some sort of justice. So it makes sense. This also makes me to believe there are evil/criminal forces in the realm, or else why would such order exist. Are there other memebers in this said order? We don't know yet.

Voicelines: Failed Romances
Next thing we'll be looking at Fernando's voicelines and how others interact with him. Let's just say he doesn't have it easy with the Ladies, especially Cassie. Why Cassie you may ask, well when Fernando kills Cassie he says either 2 of these lines

Basically Fernando is in love with Cassie. Or is he? Look at the top quote, "You WERE the love of my life".
Keyword: Were. What does this mean? Maybe they used to date or maybe they knew each at one point and Fernando was turned down by Cassie.

(Which would explain her following voicelines)

Eventually (I'm guessing) he tries for some other girls in the Paladins universe.

(To make this short Ima just put the voicelines of the different characters)

Skye

Evie (Although the first line seems a bit weird to me)

Even Willo (I guess, see the first line)

That's pretty much it for the Fernando lore (that I know of) TIME FOR MORE LORE
Androxus: The God Slayer
Androxus The God Slayer, a fitting name for a powerful flank.

Never whisper the name Androxus, the champion who once sat atop the Skull Throne of Umbria and the mortal who dared to Slay the god Nyx, lest the divines curse you as they have him. Stories are told across Crosswind of how a mortal might slay a god, but only Androxus knows what punishment such an act might bring.

So just from that we can conclude several things:
  • He killed a god named Nyx, aka the goddess of Darkness
  • He used to be a mortal
  • Was cursed for such action
  • Used to rule the "Skull Throne of Umbria"

Let's start off with the whole Nyx thing:

Nyx/Nox is the Roman goddess of darkness. Intro not really needed but what I believe is that Androxus used to be a mortal (obviously) and he found Nyx at one point in his life. How he found Nyx is unknown but I would assume Androxus had a fierce encounter with her to be able to kill her.

Proof of Androxus having a human form is his appearance in the Pre Alpha. Another thing that struck my mind was that maybe he wasn't a normal human to be able to kill Nyx with reversal. In case you didn't know, Androxus killed Nyx with his Reversal ability, one major giveaway is his legendary Godslayer boosting Reversal.

Another thing to take account of is that he killed Nyx while he was in his "Human Form", meaning he had his crystal already (The crystal theory will be explained later). How he got it is yet to be known. What I theorize is that after killing Nyx someone or something curses his body/soul and plunged it into darkness, slowly transforming him in what I call a "Shadow form" an example is his ultimate, accursed arm. And when he gets healed he says, "The curse is held at bay". Proving there are ways to control it. I also theorize that the crystal he had also transformed with him, giving him the ability to control the curse to a certain extent and to use it to his advantage by releasing its energy on the Revolver he has (Which also proves how Acursed arm works). Visual wise his body is most likely "corrupted" with darkness that he had to wear a mask and armor to what I'm guessing hide himself.

Voicelines don't really reveal much except that Androxus uses Fear to strike intimidation into his enemies :/

COMMUNITY LORE
Androxus is confirmed the NEW god of Christmas ;)

Originally posted by Commander Fluffles:
It was the night before christmas.

And already awake.

Was an excited Androxus as excited as.... uh... Cake!

He summoned the flankers.

And rushed to the tree.

To see the presents awaitng thee(?)

Androxus got his gift and unwrapped it fast.

But his joyful expression sure didn't last.

His present this year well it was a poster.

A photo of Lex, admiring a Toaster.

The cards he recieved.

That increased his woe.

Were letters from players.

'NERF SKYE SHE A HO!'

And that is why androxus hates christmas killed the god of christmas and took that role.

Thank you good night.

Pip: The Rogue Alchemist
Pip, a small furry creature incapable of doing harm right? Well, he has an entire backstory that isn't so cute and aborable

The secret to making liquid fire has long been guarded by the Alchemists of the Iron Shrine, lest it fall into hands that would turn it to war and profit. Pip is those hands. Those tiny, tiny hands. Having stolen his gear from the Alchemists, Pip races to make a name for himself in Crosswind Hold, before the Iron Shrine catches up to him.

So who/what is this "Iron Shrine" that held this liquid fire?

First of all we can see Pip wasn't the nicest of creatures, more or less a skilled thief. He seemed to have stolen all his gear from the Iron Shrine, including the chemical formula that he contains in his weapon.

Im assuming that this "Liquid Fire" is very valuable and powerful. One piece of evidence would be the his ultimate Evil Mojo, turning everyone in the flask's radius into a chicken.

This part somewhat confuses me; why does he turn them into chickens? Why not kill them off right away? Or do something more impressive, I dunno. I guess that's on Pip to decide what he wants to use the alchemy for.

After all that he decides to run to Crosswind Holds, as a fugitive, to, what it says, make a name for himself. (Sounds like Fernando in a way, just that Pip is doing it for other reasons)

Other than that I don't have much more lore for Pip. Although I will mention one piece of lore I know that involves Bomb King, that will be in the Bomb King section.

Looking through the voicelines I couldn't really find much except this one line'
These lines seem friendly, I suspect that Pip and Cassie maybe became friends while they were in the Realm or something
Barik: The Master Mechanic
Barik, a loud smart man. Poor dude's shield got screwed by the recent updates.

Like most of his kin, Barik is loud, obnoxious, and lacks subtlety. All traits that serve him well in his profession as a Ruins Raider. No shrine, temple, or crypt is safe if Barik is around. Using devices of his own invention, and with an eye to turn a profit, Barik plunders all, and has made a name for himself in Crosswind Hold.

So we see that he gets most of his qualities from his family. And, like Torvald, Barik is a "Ruin Raider".

As it also says, No shrine, temple, or crypt is safe if Barik is around. Barik most be really smart then to be able to break into almost any place with loot.

There isn't much lore on him to be honest, so this section will be short.

One thing I did find was this voiceline:
This shows he had a thing for Cassie ((((((Funny, so did Fernando ;))))))))
Bomb King: His Majesty
Bomb King, one of the highest skilled characters in the game. He doesn't much lore but there is one lore theory (presented by a youtuber called NinjaBoffin) that claimed that Pip made Bomb King.

So one major piece of evidence is that Bomb King isn't "living", he's mechanical. As im sure you have noticed, Bombking is made from some kind of liquid fire, or just could be lava :p but whatever.

You know who else has liquid fire? PIP
*Cue illuminati music*
And you know what map in the Realm involves a castle and flasks and that stuff? STONEKEEP
*Cue more illuminati music*

According to the theory Pip made Bomb King in StoneKeep, naturally BK became the King of Stonekeep, hence the name Bomb King

(Here's the original video, he explains it a lot better. In the video he also explains the lore behind SK)

Other than this I couldn't find much else :/
Buck: The Unyielding
COMING SOON

(Legit couldn't find anything)
Maeve: Of Blades
No real lore yet, sadly

However, after taking a look at some voicelines and cards it's obvious that Maeve is from the streets and that she had a life of crime. How she got her crystal is somewhat unknown, she most likely stole it.

Looking back at the voicelines once more I also noticed a certain line. She apperantly had a thing for Sha Lin. Not sure how that'd work but ayy not gonna stop you guys from imagineing it. Other than that i couldn't really find much
Inara: The Stone Warden
Not much on Inara. Although I do suspect that, since she's what I call an "elemental". She probably found her crystal in the earth or something. Evidence is her card Summit. In the picture I see, what I assume is Inara, with her staff but no Crystal in it.

One other thing I noticed is that in her lines she talks to Makoa as if they were friends or something. That he would "understand her fight".
Cassie: The Hunter's Daughter
Seems like a couple champs already like Cassie... RIP FERNANDO POOR DUD.

Raised in Cobalt Keep and daughter to the legendary huntmaster Arturos, Cassie snuck away from home to find adventure and freedom. Armed with her Father's crossbow and joined by her childhood companion Zigs, Cassie enters the lands of Crosswind Hold ready for any challenge.

So starting off we know Cassie was the daughter of a legendary hunter names Arturos. And it's most likely Cassie learned all her skills from her father. Looking back at the first sentence it also seems like Cassie is from a place called Cobalt Keep, which, judging from the cards, is probably a forest or something in that nature.

One other thing to notice is when it says Armed with her Father's crossbow and joined by her childhood companion Zigs. So, to me, Cassie seems like she's in her 20's and if that bird, Zigs, was her childhood friend; how old is Zigs exactly?.

I did some research and found out that most birds live from 2-5 years (of course these are for smallish birds and Zigs is pretty small) but the highest recorded is 21 years. And we have to take into account that childhood can be a different range of ages; could be from 5-10 years old or 1-10 years old. (If we use the 5-10 one and assuming Cassie is like 20-25) Zigs would be approximately 15 years old. Which is pretty impressive for a bird his size.

Last thing to mention is one of her cards, Drain Life. We know Cassie is an archer (or used to be when she had her bow, would a crossbow user be considered an archer?) so the use of magic or something like that is unlikely. So why is this card portrayed like this? I dunno. Maybe she has some hidden power or something because one thing that does confuse me is that her bird dies when she dies, doesn't fly away or nothing, just dies.

Voicelines
So looking through the voicelines there isn't much I found. I then went onto the other Cassie voicelines (Like Nightbane and Sun Kissed) and found one voiceline under Sun Kissed.

So back to hat I speculated with Fernando, it is confirmed Cassie turned him down and possibly caused Fernando to just forget about her. Thus him saing "You WERE the love of my life".
Evie: The Winter Witch
Evie is now seen everywhere in games, plz make it staph

Prodigy to the archmage of Stonebriar, Evie defied her master by using Soul Magic to bind the Ice Wraith Xerses forever to her. Gaining great power and becoming immortal, she was outcast for her unholy act. Wandering the north for time untold, no one knows why she has come to Crosswind Hold, and no one dares ask.

So as it says, she defied her master, used magic to bind the Ice Wraith Xerses (assuming that's her crystal), got kewl powers and became immortal (sorry to all them people who thought she was a teenager), and came to Crosswind Hold because she was banished from Stonebriar.

Not much on her. Card art and voicelines don't reveal much either from what I can see.
Ash: The War Machine
COMING SOON

Other than that her kingdom lost to Fernando and she despises him.
Drogoz: The Greedy
COMING SOON
Mal'Damba: Wekono's Chosen
Finally I get to ma boi the Snek Master Mal'Damba

No official lore on him but there are some things that are obvious. He uses dark magic and the power of Wenkono (the spirit that possseses him, aka Snek God) to make his things and send out flying Sneks and his ultimate of dark magic.

It's pretty clear from the Card arts that my boi, the Snek Master, was possesed by Wenkono. And I think it wasn't voluntarily because Maldamba refers to it as a "curse". Another clear distinction that he's possesed is how when he reloads he throws his snake and another one appears, and how the snake can shoot lazer beams that can heal AND has a legendary card named "Spirit's Chosen".

Voicelines
The voicelines do reveal quite a bit.

First that Wenkono protects Maldamba and can't be killed by a mere mortal

Another line he says towards Androxus reveals that Wenkono isn't really a god but more of a spirit

He also reveals that Wenkono is pretty darn old when he talks to Makoa

And to all you players going through rough Paladin times ;)
Torvald: The Runic Sage
Poor dud, more useless than he was before thanks to OB 53; doesn't stop me from making lore.

(No real lore yet) However (lore presented by LittleFieryOne) it seems Torvald is one of the few(or the only) character(s) that doesn't have a crystal. You could argue it's in his gauntlet but it you look at it closely it doesn't look like any crystal I've ever seen. What he speculated it that (since he's from the future. Voicelines confirm it) Torvald may have found away to simulate the same power of a crystal using whatever he could find from possibly Ruin Raiding. That maybe also explains his ulting line "It's working, IT'S WORKING". Using a combination of different things he made a way to silence people, make a hyper beam, a primary beam, a shield that can regenerate, etc.

Voicelines
Proof that he is in fact a "time traveler"
Grover: The Wild
Grohk: The Lightning Orc
Kinessa: The Bounty Hunter
Makoa: The Ancient

Lex: The Hand of Justice
Sha Lin: The Desert Wind

COMMUNITY LORE: Crystals
Originally posted by LittleFieryOne:
I've been thinking that these need a set of rules or something. If the lore is going to be interesting, we can't just say "They're magic, they can do anything." At the very least, they should be rare, or else literally anyone could be a champion. And we might as well talk about these first, since they're practically one of the most important elements to the game.

I've theorized that once a gem is set to do or manipulate one specific thing, it can't do anything else. Obviously, using it in a certain way causes it to cool down. For instance, Maeve has two crystals on her lapels. One of them could reduce her weight whenever she wants. Jumping mid air would only require a small burst of energy, so no lengthy cooldown; launching forward at a deadly velocity could maybe take up half, while running at a great speed speed for a period of time would use up the other half. The other gem could her Nine Lives ability; essentially a backup for her that can also provide healing. The crystal on her back could be for her ult.

Alternatively, things like Bolt or Ying's mirror could be powered by at least one gem, while the machine does the rest.

One exception is Torvald, who, unless I'm blind (and I might be), does not seem to have his own crystal. But people seem to think he's a time traveller, so he could come from a time where gems have been replaced with runes that supply an endless source of energy. We do see how they are, in some ways, superior, since he can disable another champion's abilities.

I want to give credit to reddit and some steam forum posts that allowed me to uncover what I could of lore.

I also want to give Credit to Joshino and Ninjaboffin for the exttra lore inspirations. And thanks for everyone that comments and views this guide ^-^

Paladins existed in a alpha and beta build for years before Realm Royale first appeared as a gamemode in Paladins, then made into its own standalone game

Cassie: Maybe "the oracle" who freed her from curse was Seris, because she is "The oracle of the abyss"
