The Hypercluster

Description
#HackerJam Honorable Mention: Most Brain-Melting Mechanics. Even Matt found his skills tested.

You have beaten all the challenges laid before you. Now a mysterious group tasks you with a new challenge.

Can you overcome The Hypercluster? Or will you fall at the first hurdle?

2017/10/25 11:05 UTC Creator's note: So I think I finally figured out what was breaking saves in my extension. Here's to hoping this update fixes it.

Update 14/11/2021 UTC: God it's been a while since it was removed from the workshop hasn't it? Doing better mentally, finally... Anyway I am restoring this because I recently re-discovered it in my hard drive after all this time. With the ID and everything! Turns out I never actually uninstalled Hacknet after all this time.

That being said... Honestly? This is a product of it's time, and I don't really plan to change what's already being established except to make sure they are actually working. For those new, don't go into this extention expecting a real puzzle (turns out 2017 me sucked at puzzles, and present me still does too). This is an extension where everything's tuned to be as "to the wire" with timings as possible. Renaming port hackers is heavily recommended.

It's also fairly light on the (side/back)story. I used to have all these notes on my main drive about other fun little things I could hide in various clusters before that decided to kick the bucket. Thankfully a friend was able to give me their map of Cluster G (which they made after I messed up and forgot the order when Cluster G broke the first time). I need to add it somewhere in the game as an easter egg.

Also, I will pre-emptively apologise for the absolute hell on lower-end PCs that is Cluster T. I, however, am not sorry enough to change it in any way. The main lagging script ends once you beat the challenge.

Matt, for being so patient with all the stuff my extension ended up throwing at him.

Matt, for creating the <FastActionHost /> Daemon.

Main Testers:
Lordanem
Fayti1703

Compatability Testers (Without you, there might have never been a FastActionHost Daemon):
Lordanem: 30-60fps (Pre-v2), i7-3770k (quad core), 16GB RAM, nVidia 970 Gigabyte Windforce 4GB, Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit
CreepiX: Below 10 fps (Pre-v2), 85 fps (Post-v2), AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (dual core), 2GB RAM, Radeon HD 4800, Windows 10 Pro 32-Bit
Kwiper: 20-40fps (Pre-v2), 60fps (Post-v2), i5-4570S processor (quad core), 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024MB , macOS Sierra 10.12.15
Fayti1703: 15-25 fps (Pre-v2), 60 fps (Post-v2), i7-860 (quad core), 6GB RAM, nVIDIA GTX 660 2048MB, Ubuntu 16.04
ICE-01: 12-60fps (Pre-v2), 60fps (Post-v2), AMD FX-8320, 16GB RAM, 2048MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960, Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Compatability Patch v1 does not load everything at launch and instead loads them in as needed. Unfortunately due to how the Action Scripts work, most of the scripts do not un-load so performance will degrade.
Compatability Patch v2 is the new system introduced in v5.065 where a dedicated delay host Daemon was made. This has vastly improved the resource cost.

This extension heavily encourages you to rename the various tools to speed up the hacking process (such as renaming SSHCrack to 22), as well as tab complete what you can't rename (such as porthack). You also need to figure out which of those tools is the fastest to use, as you only need 1 port open on A-X to Porthack it. From what I can remember, the bin deletion process goes in alphabetical order, so keep that in mind when it comes to setting up your bin folder's structure, as you want to at least have the memdump running by the time the executable gets deleted, though YMMV on that one.

So what do I do on A-X? I can't use trap, and it doesn't leave me enough time to open port + porthack, not even mentioning dump
Grumpy Yukichi  [author] Mar 6, 2024 @ 12:03pm
So the only stuff that will enable the ram after the fact are immensely damaging (eg. wiping sys them fork-bombing) hacks. A-X wipes your bin folder, which, while annoying and slows down progress, doesn't fit into the above as you only have to open 1 port on A-X within approximately 10 seconds.

Nevertheless, node A-X disables my memory tray
Grumpy Yukichi  [author] Mar 4, 2024 @ 9:35am
For the most part, you don't. Nodes which you can/should trap should re-enable your RAM view as part of it.
Heldrick Mar 3, 2024 @ 11:33pm
Hey, how do I trigger trap from console? All the nodes I connect to disable my memory display, and I can't trigger them by click

Either way, I have finished this extension, and wow I loved it! Has definitely got to be one of my favorites I've played so far! (I am on a long, long journey to play them all lol)

I checked the file, and found that the ip for the credits named "Final Point" had a different IP from the one given in the Credits.txt, and the IP in the credits.txt doesn't exist in the files? I checked 3 other accs and it only happened on the one I finished lmao. Sorry for the bother, not sure why it happened. My acc is named Ace, if that's any indication?
Grumpy Yukichi  [author] Jan 27, 2023 @ 5:02am
I double checked, and for me the connect command works for the credits server without dev tools. Are you possibly mistyping the IP?
Grumpy Yukichi  [author] Jan 27, 2023 @ 3:44am
From personal experience the #GIBSON_IP# tag can be a bit finicky. I'd recommend checking the IP as written for "gibsonCredits" in your save (if it exists) and see what it is there. If it's still impossible to connect, then you'll need to dev connect to gibsonCredits and let me know so I can fix it for future playthroughs.
