Howdy!
Welcome to chapter two of the Idiot's Guide to Undertale! This guide will be all about Snowy Forest and Snowdin Town. Have no fear about spoilers, since there will not be any! I must note that this guide might turn out to be very messy/tricky, since this part of the game is when all your previous actions really start to have consequences on the gameplay. Despite this, I shall do my best to deliver quality help to all newcomers and secret hunters. Without further delay, let us begin!
Snowy Forest
(In order to cut down on size in this section, the puzzles will have a separate section and will not be explained in this section. When a puzzle is referenced and you need help on it, please refer to the puzzle section.)

Now that you have exited the RUINS (yes, RUINS is completely capitalized in canon mentions of it), you will notice straight away that you are in a very different kind of place. After walking down the creepy forested path and potentially being spooked by a shadowy creature several times, you will be halted at a bridge and the being will approach you. It turns out that he is just a friendly skeleton named Sans, and he will bring you to the next 'room' where an introductory cutscene will play. Here you will meet his wacky brother named Papyrus. Once they have left, go to the next 'room' where you will encounter a crossroads. There are plenty of new monsters to get in encounters with (they have their own section in this guide) and you will see a box. You can store items in this box and get them out from the same box in several locations throughout the game. From this point, Snowy Forest is rather linear and you just have to endure Papyrus' awful amazing puzzles until you reach Snowdin Town. It's impossible to get lost, so I won't bother giving you a boring lecture on getting from one room to the next.

The areas in the forest are pretty empty and not very noteworthy aside from the enemy encounters and some rooms you might come across along the way. The fights have their own section in this guide for reading's sake.

A note on some noteworthy areas:
The big locked door in the cave with the glowing mushrooms can NOT be opened until the way end of the game in a certain run, so don't waste your time trying out mushroom combinations. The mushrooms are there for show.

In the area with the snowman, you can take a piece from him. It can be used as a strong healing item or you can save it until the end of the game like he asks you to. It doesn't have an effect on the game's ending. If you are playing mercilessly, you can take up to 3 pieces from him until he dies.
Papyrus' Horrible Puzzles
Before you get mad and shriek in the comments, you have to admit that Papyrus' puzzles are rather easy and boring. His reactions are far funnier than the actual puzzles. Anyways, here are the puzzles as best as I can describe them without making it too difficult.

NOTE: All of Papyrus' puzzles have been deactivated if Flowey made a plan with you to kill everybody back at the RUINS, so skip this section if he did. (He only does this if you have wiped out everyone in the RUINS, so don't panic.)

  • The Incredible Invisible Electric Maze!! - Papyrus isn't the brightest bulb in the lamp, so all you have to do to get past this one is follow the footprints he left on the ground when he forgot to give you the orb. It's quite shocking how dim that skeleton can be.

  • Junior Jumble - You don't have to complete the jumble. It's just a piece of paper on the ground.

  • The first X's to O's - It's so easy; there's only two X's that you step on. Step on the button when you finished.

  • The second X's to O's - It's easier to do this one if you start from the top and then go from the sides, but the easiest way is to skip the whole puzzle by flipping a hidden switch on one of the trees near Papyrus. Either way, he still assumes you beat the puzzle.

  • Coloured tiles - What a lame-o, you don't even have to do this one! The puzzle always shuffles to a path that you can walk across with no other issues. Although, I do suggest remembering Papyrus' instructions because you will have to do a functional version of this puzzle way later in the game.

  • The Gauntlet of Deadly Terror - Thankfully, Papyrus puts this puzzle away and doesn't use it on you. What a relief.

  • Turn X's to O's (with sliding ice!) - There's two ways to do this one. I'll show you both.
and you can also do this:

There is one thing that you might also stumble across and consider a puzzle, but it is not required. The Ball game is only for fun and rewards you gold. Don't bother.
Monster Encounters
I'm going to list all the encounters and the methods of beating them here. The only one I will not mention yet is Papyrus since he is a boss.

[Snowdrake] This monster looks like a bird and likes awful puns. There are three methods to defeat him.
1. CHECK on him, laugh at the pun he proceeds to make, then SPARE him.
2. Heckle him multiple times with the ACT button.
3. FIGHT him until his health reaches zero and he dies.

[Chilldrake] The same as Snowdrake, only 20% cooler. Defeat him using the same methods for Snowdrake.

[Icecap] This one is a small monster wearing a strange hat on its head. There are three ways to win this battle.
1. Ignore it using the ACT button two times. Then SPARE it.
2. Same as above, expect before sparing it, steal the hat then compliment the icecap using ACT. Then SPARE it that way.
3. FIGHT until it dies.

[Lesser Dog] dog. Can be defeated two ways.
1. Pet. Then SPARE. If you pet it enough, its neck stretches and it builds a bunch of wacky snowdogs later on as a fun little detail.
2. FIGHT until it dies.

[Greater Dog] aware of dog. please pet. Can be defeated three ways.
1. Using ACT, you have to beckon, pet, play, then pet twice. Then SPARE it.
2. Ignore it three time using ACT. It leaves on its own due to boredom.
3. Kill it using the FIGHT button.

[Jerry.] Nobody likes Jerry. He only shows up during other encounters and makes monster attacks last longer.
1. Ditch him when he shows up. If you wait too long to defeat the other monsters in the battle, he comes back and has to be ditched again.
2. FIGHT until he dies. Warning, Jerry is pretty tanky.

[Dogi] Dogamy and Dogaressa. Defeated two ways.
1. Using ACT, roll around, re-sniff, pet both dogs. SPARE.
2. FIGHT until they die. Go for Dogaressa first since killing her makes Dogamy unable to attack properly. Going for Dogamy first makes Dogaressa stronger, so beware!

[Doggo] Partially blind dog. Two methods to win.
1. Do some random action that doesn't hurt him. Then don't move when he sends a blue attack. Pet him using ACT. SPARE him when he's been pet.
2. FIGHT until he dies.
Snowdin Town
Now that you've gotten through the puzzles and enemies, you have made it to Snowdin! There are no encounters that you have to worry about here aside from the boss just before the next major area of the game, so relax.

In front of the Shop and Inn building, there is a SAVE point. I highly suggest saving at this point for the sake of making sure you save any new items you might buy in the shop. There is also a box for putting away items for later.

In the shop, you can buy healing items, armour, and a weapon. If you have killed enough monsters in Snowy Forest, the shopkeeper will have fled and you can get the items for free by stealing them.
Here's a picture of all the items you can buy and their prices if the shopkeeper is still there.

You can also go to the inn next door to the shop. Don't worry about the price of staying there; she will refund you anyway since your character will have a hard time sleeping. Sleeping there brings your health up above maximum HP.

From this point on, you can look around the town and talk to people (if they are there) and stock up for the battle with Papyrus. Use the igloo structures to travel around town a little quicker. Once you feel that you are ready to go, head to the east of the town until snow covers the screen and Papyrus shows up.

Warning: If you are trying to do a run where everyone is killed, do not head to Papyrus' battle yet unless your SAVE point has a red message that informs you that you killed everybody. If you did kill everyone already or if you aren't going for that ending, go ahead.
The "Great" Papyrus
Oh well, looks like you'll have to battle Papyrus. Luckily for you, he is rather soft and is very desperate for friends, so it won't be so bad to win this battle. There are a few ways to defeat Papyrus, one of which depends on if you've killed everyone up to this point of not.

Don't mind my character's name. Just ignore it. I forgot that I gave myself a silly name since I haven't played Undertale in 4 whole months. It won't kill you or anything.

[Option One] Survive Papyrus' attacks while sparing him or some other way of refusing to kill him the whole time. When he offers you MERCY, accept it and the battle will end.

[Option Two] FIGHT Papyrus while avoiding his attacks. Once he finishes his last attack and offers you MERCY, attack him again so he dies and the battle ends.

[Option Three] If you suck at Papyrus' fight, don't worry. If you lose three times, he gets tired of locking you in his shed and gives you the option to skip the battle.

[Option Four] This option is only available if you did a No-Mercy run in Snowdin. FIGHT Papyrus once, and he dies instantly. Alternatively, you can SPARE him and the battle ends right away.

Papyrus uses a strange type of attack system. When your SOUL is blue, you are affected by gravity. The whole battle works like a platforming game. Use the up arrow key to jump and the left and right ones to move while in the air.

If you defeated Papyrus by showing him MERCY, he gives you the option to go to his house for a hangout or a date depending on if you flirted with him or not. You don't have to date him straight away, but this date is required to get his phone number and to get a certain ending to the game. You could even wait until right before the final boss and then go back to date Papyrus if you wanted and it won't affect your game.
Spoiler-Free Secrets
It's spoiler-free; don't worry.

  • You can interact with the bush near the RUINS, some of the trees in the forest, and a pole on Papyrus' bridge to find out that someone planted cameras there to watch you. You'll find out who did it later in the game, so I won't tell you now.

  • Gyftrot. You can find this monster when you head down to the area near the locked door I mentioned earlier. Undecorate him then show mercy, or kill him.

  • Glyde. If you go into the cave with the door, you can walk around for at least three minutes before Glyde shows up. You need to clap for him and then spare him, or just kill him. This must be done before encountering Papyrus, or else Glyde will not appear.

  • About that door, it can be opened in a certain ending if you can dodge every single name in the credits. This only happens in one ending, however.

  • Sans teleports right before your eyes in the area where Gyftrot is found.

  • Trying to leave the maze puzzle and the jumble puzzle before Papyrus can use them on you will make him say something about it.

  • You can confuse Papyrus by saying that you don't understand his instructions for the tile puzzle until he gives up and storms off to rest his brain. The note he leaves on the ground to help you apparently has handwriting too awful for your character to read.

  • There are a few phonecalls you can get that depend on a secret value in the files called "Fun". One call is a pizza prank call, another is about your fridge, and the third one is a wrong number dial.

  • Speaking about "Fun", if it is a certain value, the Junior Jumble has a random snowman character added to it called Nightmare.

  • The snoring monsters in the inn snore to the tune of the Game Over screen screen music. (That music is called "Determination", in case you didn't know.)

  • In a merciless run, you can jump on the counter in Grillby's since the horse monster sitting on the stool has fled.

  • You get a randomized snow hat on your head when you travel through the tunnel after the sliding ice puzzle.

  • After defeating Papyrus, the price of the Bisicles in the shop increase in price.

  • If you pet Lesser Dog more than one time, it creates crazy snowdog sculptures. They look like this:
End of Chapter
Well, that's it for this chapter of the Idiot's Guide to Undertale. Hopefully it was helpful and not too confusing due to the multiple paths you can take. Thanks for all the support from the last guide that inspired me to pick up this series and continue it! I'll see you all in Chapter 3 of the Idiot's Guide to Undertale: Waterfall. That area has the biggest differences between game run types, so that chapter will take longer to make.

Thanks for everyone that's been reading so far, and I'll see you in the next chapter.

I like the name. I like the fact that it says "spoiler-free", even though that's practically impossible. I like the fact that it's surprisingly spoiler-free. And lastly, I like to kill everything. Thanks for nothing.
