What is Ping?

Many people assume that a fast, responsive internet connection relies solely on a good download and upload speed, but there’s more to it than that. There's also ping, which is essentially a reaction time. If you have a ping of 98ms (milliseconds) that's the time it has taken for your computer to respond to a request by another computer.

Clearly, you want as low a ping time as possible. Many online games show your ping time along with the ping of other players or servers. If your ping is around 1000 (or more), you will almost certainly have problems playing the game due to the delay.

Ping doesn't just affect games, but a large ping time is very noticeable when timing is crucial. That's why a low ping is so important in games, especially where your position (think first-person shooters or racing games) is everything.
Steps on how to do it
There is no single way on how to reduce ping, but a number of possible solutions. These are the possible solutions for reducing ping.

1. Close all other programs and windows on your computer, making sure that there are no active downloads running in the background that might be affecting the ping.

2.Try and move your laptop nearer your router or, better still, connect your computer directly to your router using an Ethernet cable or powerline adapters. This overcomes any potential issues that you may be having with Wi-Fi and poor signal strength, which may affect the latency of your internet connection.

3.The more devices that you have connected and actively using the internet connection, the higher ping you’ll have. Maybe someone else in your house is running a bandwidth hungry service, like streaming Netflix in full HD or playing online games. Try asking them to stop using internet while you are playing.

4.Turn your router off and turn it back on again. Specifically, unplug the power cable from your router and wait around a minute before plugging it back in again. If your setup comprises of a separate router and modem, make sure you turn both off and not just the router.

5.Consider buying a new router. If you're just using the default one supplied by your internet service provider, you're probably not making the most of your connection. Upgrading to a better router might help you get improved connection speeds, and potentially improve your Wi-Fi coverage too.

6.Call your internet service provider. Your ISP will usually be able to detect and fix any potential issues remotely and should improve speeds – and if there are no faults with your connection, maybe it’s time that you thought about switching to another provider. Or moving house.
Additional Step (For the Desperate)
(This works fine for me but this may not work as fine for others. This may or may not decrease your ping. Please continue with caution.)

This involves disabling Nagle’s algorithm, also commonly known as TCP no delay, which is basically an optimization of network traffic that tries to reduce overall packet volume but can cause extra latency in the connection.

This made the greatest reduction in my ping. This decreased my ping in TF2 from 150-250ms to 55-100ms, which matches the latency I would see via a tracert to the game’s server.

1. From a command prompt (usually in All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) run “regedit”

2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

3. Browse the items under interfaces until you find one that has an IPAddress entry matching the network interface you want to affect (typically LAN IP addresses start with 192.168 or 10.0); note that if your IP address is automatically assigned by a DHCP server you may need to look for a matching DhcpIPAddress instead of IPAddress

4. Right-click on the interface and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it “TcpAckFrequency”

5. Right-click the new TcpAckFrequency value and select Modify, enter “1″ (Hexadecimal radio button should be selected)

6. Right-click on the interface and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it “TCPNoDelay” (note that TCP is all uppercase this time – that’s intentional)

7. Right-click the new TCPNoDelay value and select Modify, enter “1″ (Hexadecimal radio button should be selected)

8. Verify that both TcpAckFrequency and TCPNoDelay now show up in the adapter’s property list with types REG_DWORD and values 0×00000001

9. Exit regedit and reboot (reboot is necessary for the changes to take effect!)

10. Play a game and enjoy your new low ping
Conclusion
I really hope that this guide helped you in lowering your ping. I have a lot of experience playing with high ping (150+) and it is very frustrating that is why I am writing this guide, to help other people who are also experiencing the difficulty of high ping. I really hope that some of things I wrote will help reduce your ping :)

Thank You for reading this guide and Have a Nice Day!

network ping is latency in ms, screen framerate is fps, fps can be affected negatively by ping; fps usually affected by cpu bottleneck (add cores...)

i have 1000+ ping still

ping and lag(FPS) are not the same

Its the only game I ever get lag, and I never had a match without lag, is so fucking weird.

thx. this helped me a bit

None helped. Still ping spikes reaching up to 7200 ms. My location is the problem but I can't move out :)

Had to quit competitive (real leagues) because of this.
