By YuukaW
*THIS GUIDE IS OUTDATED, AND WILL FOREVER BE ARCHIVED BY THE CREATOR*
So. you just decided to purchase a character named Thatch. Why? It's probably because you like pirates, and you like guns and blades and calling everyone a swab. Or, you got totally destroyed by a Thatch, and you said, in the end screen: "Wish I could do that!"

This guide will basically tell all the fundamentals and a bit of combos for Thatch, The Madman of Barbados, and help you reach a greater height. I will also discuss the weapons you have as him.

Basics
First, remember that Thatch has very low defense right now. The lowest in the whole game, same goes for Jhala and Ember. This would mean that you'll be tossed around like a ragdoll if you're not very careful with your strikes. So, it's suggested that you avoid overextended skirmishes, and don't chase the same enemy for too long. It would be a good idea to practice how to dodge, and perhaps get you some additional defense with the defense stance.

So, with that pretty much said, here are some pros and cons:

+ Strong damage output.
+ Extraordinary speed
+ Unpredictable combos to newcomers
+ Easy to pick up

- Hard to master
- Close Ranged glass cannon, meaning he needs to get close to targets to attack
- Low defense, meaning he won't be able to react too easily when being knocked around.
- Blade attacks can be sometimes confusing
- Blaster specials are highly close ranged
The Sword
The sword is the weapon of choice that Thatch has, and you will usually get this at the start of each game when you pick up a weapon spawn. Your light swings are as basic as every other sword attack, but the specials are something to talk about.

Your special while standing still will release a torrent of water upwards in a diagonal arc based on the direction you are standing. This can be acted like Bödvar's hammer special while standing still, but it has a slightly further and wider range.

Your special while moving will cause Thatch to slash twice in a direction based on your movement. Note that this is one of the only specials that gives Thatch a slight bit of range.

Your special while holding down will cause Thatch to whirlwind his blade around him. This will move Thatch a slight bit backwards on his initial strike, but it can be useful for dodging and striking enemies behind you. This attack also damages all characters in front of Thatch. The second strike hits anything in front of you, and it causes the target(s) to arc in the direction based on the initial cast.
The Blasters
The Blasters are quite different from the bow, but they are both ranged. However, the bow's attacks are more reliable when using a direction, while the blasters can be also reliable when staying still. This is because the bow will shoot upwards diagonally based on the direction you're facing. As with all weapons, the basics all remain the same. However, all specials are unique.

Your special while standing still will fire two shots out from your hand cannons. Keep in mind that your initial shot will be shorter than your next shot, and you will move a step backwards. This can be, like your downward special, an excellent alternative for dodging, and it's a very useful tool for close combat when your enemy is straight in front of you, and your basic shots are out of reach.

Your special while moving in a direction will fire a close range burst of bullets. No, FYI, the picture does not show Thatch blow out some burning buckshot. This attack is one of your other ranged tools, but it's slightly closer than the directional sword special.

Your special while holding down will launch two slow but powerful cannonballs into the air. Personally, I tend to avoid this one, because you are highly vulnerable while using it. It's highly recommended that you use this when the enemy players can't reach you.
Characters to watch out for
Thatch has a few a couple of counters that can make him an extremely bad at one match. These are some that you should keep aware of.

Diana has some incredibly good range, due to the fact that she has both Blasters and a bow to back her up. Sure, you can dash through her and scratch her in close quarters, but that won't stop her from running away and then throwing you off the ledge with her dreaded downward specials, which, if hit, will cause you to get thrown by a rope in the opposite direction of Diana. Also, her directional blaster specials have a bit of range, so proceed with caution against her, and try to avoid her as much as you can, while trying to take down the others. This goes for any other ranged-based characters, like Ada and Cassidy.

Teros has some incredible raw power, and is one of the strongest characters in the game, including Scarlet. Heavy hitters like Teros can pound you around the map and destroy you in a heartbeat, due to your low defense. But, while these heavy hitters have a lot of brawn, their attacks are commonly directional based. For example, a hammer needs to be given a directional command to be more effective, due to the fact that the basic attacks by standing still is absolutely small compared to a wide swing. It's suggested that you get some extra defenses, so that you won't fall off the map as easily. Some heavy hitters like Teros are Scarlet and Jhala.
Chase Dodging
Ever wonder how you are able to keep up with some units that you knocked away pretty far and you got a heavy attack coming straight at you? Well, that's what chase dodging is for.

Chase dodging is where you dodge in a direction after attacking a target moments ago. These dodges are only able to be used when dodging towards the enemy you recently attacked. These dodges are faster, so that you can keep up with your enemy you just attacked. Be aware, though, you only have a very short time to activate this dodge, otherwise, if you are too late, you will dodge normally.

To commit a chase dodge, you need to dodge like normal, but in the direction of the target. This only works when going left or right, based on your opponents direction. Going up or down is out of the question.
The end of this guide
This is the end of the guide. Now, a short summary to finish it all off.

- Dodging is essential when playing Thatch.
- You are a close ranged glass cannon.
- Your defense is poor, so you will be knocked around the place often, if you're not careful.
- Diana and Teros are worth avoiding.
- Chase dodging only works upon hitting a target, and then dodging towards them (Left or right)

I want to personally thank you guys for viewing this guide I have made on teaching you how to play Thatch, The Madman of Barbados. If you enjoyed this guide, I might consider making another one. Thank you, and have a nice day!
