[ENG] A basic KZ / Climb Guide for CS:GO
By Malinka and 1 collaborators
A basic guide on how to become better and progress in the popular KZ / Climb game mode for CSGO. In this guide, you will learn how to correctly strafe, bunnyhop, long jump, crouch jump and much more in order to help you become a better player. KZ Climb gives you, as the player, many helpful skills that you can put to use in other areas of the game, such as other community server's game modes like Bunnyhop and Surf, as well as helping you to bring your movement to the next level in Competitive Matchmaking.

KZ Climb, as a game mode, is both intensely fascinating and hard to grasp when first beginning to play. Have you seen incredible videos of other players seeming to flow through the maps like a wave, being in perfect synchrony with the map and their controls?
Well, with hard work and practice, you too can become better at KZ, and CSGO in general, and have fun while you are doing it! In my opinion, while Bunnyhop and Surf servers are fun to play on, they require less pure skill and dedication than KZ. There are fewer things to worry about and play through, and fewer obstacles to face. These other game modes also appear to be on a much bigger scale (in terms of factors such as map size), therefore appearing to make you more detached from the actual game mode. For these reasons and much more, KZ is one of the definitive game modes of the Counter-Strike series, and, if you are looking to try something new, there are few comparable options. So, if you want to learn about the game mode and improve your skill in and out of CS, read on.

Notes:
⦁ The word KZ is used to reference KZ Climb as an abbreviation throughout most of this guide.
⦁ This Guide is primarily for newer KZ and/or CS players.
⦁ By no means am I saying that I am extremely skilled at KZ, or even much above average, I just believe that I am adequate and have the basic knowledge to help newer players learn the game mode.
⦁ "Movement game modes" or any similar phrases used throughout this guide should primarily be understood to include game modes such as Bunnyhop, Surf and KZ, which are widely thought to be the main genres in this "category" of CS.
⦁ Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will often be shortened to "Counter Strike", "CS:GO", or the even more concise "CS" throughout this guide.

ᴘ ᴀ ʀ τ ₁: Strafing
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

Strafing is perhaps the most important and fundamental aspect of all the movement game modes in Counter-Strike. If you already know how to strafe correctly in Counter Strike, feel free to scroll on down to the next section of the guide. Otherwise, let us start from the beginning.

Strafing is the act of moving your mouse (cursor) and holding movement keys (usually A or D) to move about in a curved line in the air (see terrible diagram for reference)

To strafe left, you must hold your A key like

And move your mouse left like

(to strafe right, do exactly as is shown above but instead of your A key and moving your mouse left, hold down your D key and smoothly look right.) One important thing to note is that you must move your mouse in a smooth line rather than in a fast motion, as if it is too quick it is all too easy to simply lose speed as a result of the limit on air acceleration in-game. Strafing will take some practice to get used to, but it is necessary to KZ for jumping around blocks and gaining speed during Bhopping. To practice strafing for KZ, it is a good idea to go on an Auto Bunnyhop server such as THIS ONE (CLICK ME TO JOIN) [www.gametracker.com]. Once you have got the hang of strafing, it is time to learn how to legit Bunnyhop.

●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
ᴘ ᴀ ʀ τ ₂: Bhopping
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

To begin this section of the guide, let me first make an important distinction: Legit Bunnyhopping and Auto Bunnyhopping are completely different activities within CS that require a lot of different skills and practice. Now, you may be asking yourself: What is the difference between these two disciplines? To put it briefly, "Legit" Bunnyhopping is primarily Bunnyhopping with the use of the mouse Scroll wheel (however any other +jump bound key will suffice to be "legit", it is just that the Scroll wheel is uniquely purposed and fitted for this task more than any other key.), while Auto Bunnyhopping is Bunnyhopping on a server (or offline with mp_auto_bunnyhopping_enable 1 set), where the server plugins (or commands) handle the actual 'jumping' for you, while you focus far more on strafing than on building and maintaining speed. I will primarily be talking about Legit Bunnyhopping in this guide, but let me first quickly cover Auto Bunnyhopping for reference.

Auto Bunnyhopping

In Auto Bunnyhopping, you must always hold down SPACE or your other jump key. When you do this, you will constantly jump up and down, as the server automatically keeps you jumping whenever you touch the ground. This leaves you to focus much more on the "other" part of Bunnyhopping, strafing. I have already briefly explained Strafing in the first section of the guide. You build up speed in Auto Bunnyhopping by constantly strafing left and right over and over while in the air, which increases your velocity and helps you to go faster. Some people are extremely skilled at this, like Forest here below.

Legit Bunnyhopping

Legit Bunnyhopping, unlike Auto Bunnyhopping, is still focused on strafing to build up speed, but even more so than this Legit Bunnyhopping is extremely centric on timing your jumps right to carry on building up speed. Basically, there is a very small margin for error (a few ticks) for jumping as soon as you land, otherwise, you lose your momentum. For this reason, most legit Bunnyhoppers bind +jump to their scroll wheels in the console ( TO DO THIS, CLICK TILD ( OR THE KEY WITH ` ON IT NEXT TO 1), AND TYPE bind mwheelup '+jump OR bind mwheeldown '+jump), and then spam their mouse wheel up, down or both whenever they get close to landing. This makes it much easier to Bunnyhop. Once you have done this, you need to start jumping as if Auto Bunnyhop was enabled, spamming your mouse wheel whenever you get close to the floor, and strafing like normal. This is quite hard to get good at, and takes a lot of practice. For some more help, I recommend watching this video.

Now, once you are comfortable with Bunnyhopping, let us move on to the next section, Crouch Jumping.

●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
ᴘ ᴀ ʀ τ ₃: Crouch Jumping
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

Crouch Jumping is when you crouch before or during your jump, at any point of elevation. Doing this at certain heights brings the bottom of your body up, allowing you to jump onto blocks that you simply could not normally jump on top of without crouching. Don't understand it? See the diagram belowTo crouch jump to the maximum height, it is best to crouch while you are still accelerating up, or where the red is on the crude diagram here:

Previously in CS:GO, it was possible to cancel your crouch part of the way up and crouch again, achieving a stupendous maximum height. The chart below shows a variety of different jump heights and the variability of 128 tick servers and 64 tick servers.

There is not much help I can offer for Crouch Jumping, as there is not much to do to get better other than to practice the timings of the crouching and jumping. Once you have become better at Crouch Jumping, let us move on to actually doing KZ!

ᴘ ᴀ ʀ τ ₄: Servers
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

Now that you are good at KZ, you need a variety of servers to pick and choose to play on. My personal favourite server is the Last Resistance KZ Server[www.gametracker.com], but there are a variety of other servers to choose. I will put a list of some good American / Oceanic and European KZ servers below:
European Servers:

Last Resistance KZ[www.gametracker.com]
House of Climb EU[www.gametracker.com]
KG KZ Climb with Knife / WS[www.gametracker.com]

●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

But, I hear you say, what if you despise human contact, even online, and wish to practice KZ on some maps offline by yourself? Firstly, there are some commands you should use in the console when on the map.

sv_cheats 1
sv_airaccelerate 1000
sv_enablebunnyhopping 1
mp_roundtime 60
bot_kick
mp_warmup_end 1 [/b]

However, you also need some suggestions for some maps to play. Throughout my time playing KZ, I can recommend these maps.

Beginner: (0-7.5 min maps)

Beginnerblock:

Intermediate: (7.5-15 min maps)

Galaxy:

Advanced: (15+ min maps)

Cursedjourney:

To find more maps, I recommend either the steam workshop or https://gamebanana.com

I sincerely hope you have enjoyed this guide, and, hopefully, you learned something or began to learn KZ from it. I spent MANY hours working on this guide to try and give back to the community, who have given me so many hours of enjoyment on both KZ and other game modes. Thank you all, but let me give a few shoutouts.

A HUGE thank you to Bluepanda for proofreading the guide, offering advice and listening to me jabber on about it so much. Other than that, here are the people, servers and more I would like to thank, and the pictures/videos I have used in this guide.
And finally, thank you all for reading. Please, if there are and mistakes you find, or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know either on my steam or in the comments below!

Hey, I'd say probably learn basic bhopping first as it's a good way to learn to strafe, then when you get more confident move to KZ. Have fun!
