The ultimate FPS guide
By swistu420
Have a toaster pc with a 210 or i5450 graphics? Fear not, this guide is for you. Here I'll go over a lot of ways to boost your FPS if you're on a pc powered by a pig on a treadmill.

Lowering/Highering graphical settings
This is a dodgy one. For some people lowering their graphical settings boosts fps, however in my case, and a lot of other people's, it runs better on higher settings. Later on I will go over fps configurations which make this useless. Mess around with it and see how it is for you. If simply doing this gives you the framerate you want, then you won't need to do this.

Before doing anything else, see how it runs on these settings:
Mods
There's a few mods that can really increase fps.

COSMETIC REMOVAL
As the name suggests, this mod removes all cosmetics. Tragic, huh? In all seriousness though, if you're someone who doesn't give one about cosmetics and just wants to be good at the game, I heavily recommend you install this mod. I tried this out and it skyrocketed my fps. But since I'm a narcissistic prick, I didn't keep it.

MAT_PHONG 0
While this isn't technically a mod, it sort of is since we are making the mod ourselves. Installing this is fairly simple. Go to your settings, click on keyboard, click on advanced, and check "enable developer console." Open up your developer console, and type in "mat_phong 0". Your game should freeze for a few seconds and when you hop into a game, the biggest difference will be the medic and pyro's gloves. The greyish shine will be removed. Personally I think this makes the game look a lot better. The best part though is that it really boosts FPS. I went from a 40fps avg to 70fps avg.
You have type it in everytime you start up TF2 though, which is annoying for lazy ♥♥♥♥♥ like me.
Someone made a complete phongless pack though. http://gamebanana.com/skins/135211
However, this causes some problems. If you don't like messing with configs then intall this. If you do feel like messing around a bit though, there's another way for it in the "Autoexec" section.

REMOVING PARTICLES
This mod helps a lot, since it removes particles. (eg. rocket smoke, crusaders crossbow cross thingies, etc.) However a significant downside to this is that it does not work on valve or skial servers. This is countered though by all the other ♥♥♥♥ in this guide.

The instructions are pretty much there, so I don't need to say much more.

TF2Mate and Comanglia's config (+ some other stuff)
DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF YOU WANT AN AUTOEXEC INSTEAD

TF2MATE
TF2mate is a config generator made by a guy called Chris. It basically lets you configure your TF2 however you want. The most useful part of it though is the graphics config. If your PC is the worst ever made, choose "maxframes". If your PC is still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrible but not the worst, use "highframes". Don't bother with the others. All the other stuff is self explanatory.
http://clugu.com/tf2mate/
how2 installation?
1. get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ life.
2. After youre finished actually customising your config, click "save to disk", and copy what is in the box.
3. Find your TF folder (Program Files (X86)/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Team Fortress 2/tf) and delete your current "cfg" folder.
4. Get winrar if you don't have it already.
5. Open the file you downloaded, and put the "cfg" folder into your tf folder.
6. Open steam, go into library, right click on "Team Fortress 2" and click properties. Then click on launch options and paste in what you copied earlier.
7. Done!

Comanglia's Toaster Config
DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF YOU HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED TF2MATE
http://www.teamfortress.tv/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide
Instructions on the page. With the "launch options part", do the same as for the TF2 mate launch options.
NOTE: If you want to have DX9, replace "-dxlevel 81" with "dxlevel 90".

"CLEAN" TF2"
This will pretty much remove all textures on maps. Gives a massive FPS boost, as the graphics hard has much less work to do. In a sense, it makes the game look better.
http://www.teamfortress.tv/21756/prism-hud-clean-tf2
There's also a hud on the page, install it if you want, I don't really care.
Autoexec file (disabling ragdolls, shadows, etc.)
IF YOU HAVE TF2 MATE OR COMANGLIA'S CONFIG ALREADY, DONT BOTHER WITH THIS!

An autoexec file is a file with commands on it that the game automatically executes whenever you start up the game (hence the name)

Go to your desktop, right click, hover over new, and choose text document.
Rename it this: (including the .cfg part. just select the "txt" and change it to .cfg.)

Again, find your TF folder (Program Files x86/Steam/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/ tf/)
Drag it into cfg folder.

Now open the file, and paste in the following:
viewmodel_fov 70
fov_desired 90
cl_ragdoll_fade_time 0
cl_ragdoll_forcefade 1
cl_ragdoll_physics_enable 0
g_ragdoll_fadespeed 0
g_ragdoll_lvfadespeed 0
ragdoll_sleepaftertime 0
cl_phys_props_enable 0
cl_phys_props_max 0
props_break_max_pieces 0
r_propsmaxdist 1
violence_agibs 0
violence_hgibs 0
mat_phong 0
r_shadows 0

The mat_phong 9 bit is for those who havent installed the phongless pack. I recommend you do this instead of the pack, but a lot of people are afraid this'll break something (it wont). I completely understand that.

Huds and HUD playermodels
First of all, if you haven't already, get a minimalistic hud.
Go onto huds.tf and find yourself something you like.

Once you have that done, go into advanced settings and under "hud settings" uncheck "use 3d playermodel in hud".

This will remove your character from your hud and instead it will be replaced by an image of the class (if the hud youve installed doesnt have classmodels at all, then skip this step.)

This doesn't give a massive boost, but it's still noticeable as your proccessor has one less model to proccess.

That's it!
I'm sure there are many over ways to boost FPS, but I simply couldn't add them all to the guide. I added the ones I personally use and poeple I know use.
If this helped you, please leave a rating corrseponding on how much you liked my guide.

Thanks for reading!
Leave any other methods you have in the comments.
This is my first guide, so it's probably ♥♥♥♥.
