How to play gmod with friends without Hamachi
By mintyy
How to create a quick and easy Garry's Mod private server for you and your friends to play on. Hosting the server doesn't use Hamachi, Other programs like Curse, or Portforwarding in any way. Credit to my friend for finding this out, and then my other friend showing me.

Starting the game
When the person who is going to host the server is on the Garry's Mod main screen, click 'Start new game' and change the max amount of players in the top right to 2 players or higher (unless your want to play by yourself) and choose the map you want to play. Be aware that if you select a map that is under the Deathrun or Prop hunt or any other game mode category, it will not set the gamemode to that what the map the category is in. Ex. If you try to play ph_office (prop hunt) it will run on sandbox, not prophunt, although later on I explain how to change the gamemode.
Getting your friends in.
When the host spawns in, get all they people they want to play with to hold Shift+Tab. When a player wanting to join is in the steam menu, click the arrow beside the hosts username and click 'Join game'. Please note that if someone wants to join the game, they HAVE to be in your steam friends list. If someone else is in the game, and they are not the host, you may be able to join their session. I don't know how this actually works, I think its the option the host can turn on called 'Peer-To-Peer'. NOTE: When the host spawns in, instead of the friends pressing Shift+Tab, the host can do it and instead of clicking join game, you click invite to game (cant remember if thats actually i button i hope it is).
You're finished! :D
Now, you just wait until all players are in the game and your finished. It's as easy as that. If you want to play the prophunt gamemode, look in bottom right of the home screen. There should be a button that has a hammer in it, or it should say Sandbox. Click the button, then choose the gamemode you want to play, then go back through steps 1-2 and the server will have the gamemode you chose. When my friend showed me this, it helped me a lot, so I hope it helped you guys too. :D
(Please stop hating, when I posted this I didn't know it was out for a while or that it was even well known lol)

when my friend tried to join it asked for an IP address how do i go about that

@Pike i believe the IP address is for people with port-forwarding, if you can't do that then you use hamachi and use the "connect [user ip]" command while you're both under the same private IP, at least i *think* that's how it works, i'm not a hamachi wizard

There's a solution that I had that worked for me:
- Start up a multiplayer server, enable 2+ players

If wanting to start up a saved map:
- Load your game first, make sure to have enough space for players
- Don't invite anyone yet.
- Load your save. Your game will still have multiplayer enabled.
- Now invite your friends to your saved map.

To save:
- Type "gm_save" in the console. Idk how to let it do it automatically, but make sure to do this once in a while if there's stuff you want to save in that world.

Manual connection: "connect [enter ip]" in console, without quotations.

Hamachi not needed anymore, and VPN should be disabled for a better connection.

@FWhyKay there's not really much i can do about that, i created this thread over 3 years ago and i don't even play gmod anymore. @Pike i'm not entirely sure how Hamachi works but from what i know is you guys both have to connect to the same virtual ip and i think you have to join a single-player game and type something into the console but you'd have to search it up, i honestly don't know. @Noodles that happens with a lot of games, i'm not sure you can really do anything about it but most of the time, the reason for that is because whoever is hosting the game gets better ping because they're hosting the game and they only need to connect to the server, whereas you need to connect to the server then connect to *them*, so if they have slow internet, it can make you slow even if you're internet is really good. the only thing i could think of is try to use the Hamachi way of connecting but i wouldn't really know.

How do you use Hamachi to join the server? I tried inviting a friend last night but sometimes the option to invite friends doesn't show up.
Sometimes while loading a map, it automatically goes to single player too...

Unfortunately this isn't that great a solution anymore because when I host a server for 2 of my friends with this method, I usually get horrible fps while they have a great framerate, but on the other hand if my friend hosts a server and I join it, they lose fps while I get a good framerate. So basically, whoever is hosting will take a massive fps hit while the people on the server won't. I don't know of any way around this.
