How to Trickstab

In this guide, I will teach you how to do basic trickstabs.

What are Trickstabs?

A "trickstab" is a name for various methods Spies use to trick their enemy into showing them their backstab hitbox, which is then usually exploited due to it's generous size. Trickstabs should not be used for every kill, as a normal backstab can do the job much more quickly and safely. They should only be used in order to escape a life-or-death situation, hopefully with your life, or to get that pick on the overconfident Medic and take him to the grave with you.

Matador Stab

With the Matador, your goal is to trick your opponent into walking one way while you quickly strafe around behind them stab their now-exposed back. Strafing is important not only in this specific stab, but in all types. You want to make your opponent think you are escaping, while in actuality you're setting up their death.

Corner Stab

Corner Stabs are a lot like Matadors, only you're using a corner to obstruct your attacker's view of you. While being chased, you want to run around a corner (like the name implies), and then when they're about to turn the corner, quickly strafe around your enemy behind them. Make sure that when you're exiting the corner you've hidden behind, you take a longer strafe around, otherwise you won't get around your target.

Stair Stab

The stairstab is a bit different from the other ones, while being chased, run up any nearby stairs, ramps, etc., and with timing, jump backwards, while directly over and behind your opponent, press w, crouch, then stab. Remember, timing, location, blah blah blah. You can also combine a cornerstab with a stairstab in order to confuse your enemy further by taking a corner into some stairs, jumping off of a high point on the stairs and strafing around and behind the enemy before they see you jump.

When to use a trickstab

A trickstab should never be used at full health or with a ringer ready to go. It is reccomended that you have at least 100 hours as spy and know how to do basic spy jobs, taking out key targets and/or sentries.

Conclusion

Although they may seem fun and feel great to pull off, trickstab in moderation. Like it's been said a few times prior, they should be used mainly for escape attempts or to kill an important player like a Medic. Never forget your revolver either. Although your knife is the most effective weapon you have, a revolver can still pack a pretty big punch if you can aim it well.
