Grande Shootout Map

Description
This is an open beta test, the map is not finalized

I am seeking feedback on balancing the map, particularly seeking suggestions on ways to clean up the sight lines. Ideas like "a cliff face placed here" or "some fencing here" type things.

  • Bots are supported so that the map can be played solo for testing, this is not a finished bot nav mesh so they may act a bit silly. Overall the bots should work fine.

  • Near the gold crate the river has current and will pull you towards the edge of the map where you will die, this is a place holder for a simular mechanic involving a waterfall drop off.

  • Cactus currently don't cause damage to players kicked into them, this will be added later.

  • There is a section of river that is clipped off(opposite end of the waterfall area), this will be cleared up and changed to river current later.

  • Currently the water is a bright blue, this is not the end water color. Also it's not clear where the river flows and does not, this will be cleared up later using proper water flowing animation. It takes a long time to do this so I'm leaving that for a finishing touch as it is mostly cosmetic, but also required for clearity.

  • The map uses my custom hay texture, which is included and packed inside the .bsp file. There's no need to subscribe to it seperately.

  • The blue box located in the camp site may be moved from that location, as in testing this location ended up being the central combat area.

Server operators note:
The map is not compressed in a VPK file, if you wish to use it on your server you can subscribe to this item and locate the .bsp and .nav files. The custom hay texture is included inside the .bsp so you can simply include the map in your server rotation with no problems.

Subscribing to this item myself resulted in the files being located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\265630\844141853\maps
265630 is the ID for FoF itself, and 844141853 is the iID for this workshop item, so the folder should be the same for everyone(assuming your client is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\, which is the default location).

Yeah I didn't like the suggestion to turn it into a cart map myself when I heard it, the layout is wrong for symetrical play so without large changes it'd have to be an attackers vs defenders type of cart push.

I could make dam areas they have to leave the raft to unclog the river, perphaps as a CP to simulate planting explosives to clear the clog.

A TP map int he same vein of eliminator may work but I have my doubts this is best setting for that. Even if eliminator is pretty simple in concept it has the interesting spots and enough variation to make it apt for different weapon types. First of all, it would require a fully symmetric setup, then something at center that allows combat at different heights, the scale seems off too (too big).

A possible course mission could be just a group of desperados trying to escape from lawmen. This kind of setting is perfect for it. However since the raft may not allow melee bots to reach players you have to make players leave the raft temporarily for side missions/healing etc. Other gameplay elements could be dynamite throwers at different heights along its way that have to be killed before it's too late. As other co-op courses, enemies still could use low grade revolvers or shotguns.

I had thought about using it as a Course map myself, others had suggested turning it into a TP cart(in this case raft) push map.

I'm not sure what I really want to do with it because I honestly threw it together as a way to practice making canyons because I need to for the last half of the training course. This plays pretty decent as shootout, but yeah someone with a bow or rifles will be getting a lot of kills.

I'll think about ways to turn it into a Course. Do you have an ideas for a "storyline" to go with it?

Map, as is now, isn't very suitable for shootout mode. It's dominated easily by ranged weapons, lack of places to go, everything at same height. It's pretty empty but you know that :)

This could be a nice foundation for a coop course where players go in a raft down the river. As a train entity it would lag a bit in multiplayer I guess but at slow speeds shouldn't be a big issue. It would be a matter of extending the canyon, create some stop areas where they have to do something, re-stock, etc. Just an idea, whatever you decide such canyon river is a cool setting for sure.
