A year after the Chernobyl Disaster, illegal expeditions into the contaminated zones were common practice for the purpose of scientific study. One such excursion led to a terrible discovery, an encounter with an unknown and incredibly lethal disease. Contact with the bacteria in an old ruin resulted in the deaths of multiple crew members, despite the use of hazmat suits. Survivors could do nothing to save the infected, and so they fled to report the incident.

Within a month, a team was rounded up to dig out the infected material from the ruin, and the bacteria was shipped to Greenland, where the researchers locked up the strain in a frozen chamber in GCR, the Greenland Containment and Research facility founded in that month for the sole purpose of quarantining the bacteria. The cold conditions proved ideal for the containment of the strain, and under these conditions, the researchers were able to begin studying the bacteria, which they quickly named simply the Chernobyl Strain. It is in GCR that they hope to keep the bacteria secure forever.

RED is a completely unique plague, using its own transmission, symptom, and ability trees. It is weak to cold and dry climates, but excels in warm and humid ones, and it has the ability to adapt and change in quite dramatic ways. It is crafted to kill, and it will do so exceptionally well with the right instructions.
