Controls
W = forward
A = left
S = backwards
D = right
E = use
Tab = inventory
space = jump
left shift = sprint
left ctrl = crouch/sneak
esc = menu
r = reload weapon/rotate when placing object
enter = chat
right mouse button = primary attack
left mouse button = secondary attack

Holding left shift for more than 4 seconds will put you into auto sprint, to save your fingers. when crouching you are completely silent, use this to stalk your prey.*NOTE* If you go through bushes you will still make a small amount of noise, even when crouched.
Servers
The servers in Rust are very different from each other.

VANILLA: How the devs think Rust should be played. No kits, no tp, no extra startgear, No extra resources, no amplified loot chances (e.g. finding an ak in the first barrel you come across).

MODDED: The modded servers can vary hugely from one and another. Some will have kits, tp, amplified loot chances etc. It is normally shown in the server name (e.g. RUSTY NOOBS | tp | kits | high loot | ). Battlefield and Battle Royale servers are also found here.

NOTES: Make sure you know when the server last wiped, its no fun trying to build a base when people already have aks and c4. Most servers are on a weekly wipe, normally thursdays when the update comes out.
Useful people
Rust can be a hard game to start in, and when the community is always shoot on sight it is hard to get help. I will briefly list some youtubers who might help.

PVP: SerWinter, Phadeo82, CoconutB, KCmoTV, Frost, BlizzardID,

Building: DeanCentral, KCmoTV, SerWinter, Guru,

There are plenty who remain nameless for one reason or another, mainly because I can not name every useful rust youtuber. These are the ones who I have found the most useful.
PVP
Rust being a pvp survival game means that pvp will happen, whether you like it or not (unless you go on a pve server). pvp is one of the many things rust does well so it is important that you know how to be effective. Pvp can also be very rewarding and fun at the same time!
Primitive PVP
Rust is a pvp survival game. If you can't pvp, then you're screwed.

Primitive: (e.g. bow, spears)
This is one of the core elemets of pvp. It really helps if you can use the primitive weapons effectively because in the early game, it is all that you're going to be able to get your hands on. Being good with a bow could mean that you manage to kill someone whos already geared, giving you a great boost to building your base/the later stages. Like most things, the more you practice, the better you get. Some great ways to practice is to hop on a primitive battle royale server, which only gives you bows, crossbows, spears and other melee weapons to use. Practice on animals, hostile and non hostile. Or just use a tree as a target.

BOW: The bow does'nt have a sight, so you will need to learn where the centre of your screen is. Some people will just put a little bit of blu tac in the middle of their moniter but i dont recomend doing this especially if you have an expencive moniter, as it can leave a mark. Just above the arrow tip is roughly the middle of your screen, so just take into account of the arrow drop and you should be fine. (the further away your target is, the more drop you will have to compensate for).

CROSS BOW: The cross bow does have a form of sight (looking down the arrow) and it has significantly less arrow drop and a bit more damage than the bow. Therefore in my opinion being easier to use. It will one hit a naked, and do decent damage even against armoured players.

SPEARS: The wooden spear is a great weapon if you just spawned on the beach, as it will one hit (when thrown not jabbed) other new spawns. As mentioned the spears (along with all other melee weapons) can be thrown, giving you good range and doing more damage than when you just jab. You can also throw it from underwater, making it the only ranged underwater weapon.
Gun PVP
You've just got yourself an ak, but get rekt by a guy with a bow because you have no idea how to control the recoil. As ive said before, practice. The more you practice the better you will get. Hop on to a battle royale or battlefield server and try out the guns there (would recomend a battlefield one if you are struggling with the aiming as you dont have to wait to re-gear and respawn). When you crouch your recoil is reduced sginificantly, so i would almost always crouch when shooting.

PISTOLS: revolver, semi auto pistol (P2), Python revolver and the M92. The pistols behave similarly with their recoil paterns and are easier to control than the rifles, and in the right hands can prove to be better. Remeber to crouch when shooting though. The revolver does the least damge but is the cheapest, the semi is not cheap nor expencive and does decent damage. The m92 does good damage, and has a large mag but its major drawback is that you can't craft it, only get it from airdrops. The most unique pistol is the Python. It has the smallest mag of all of them (6 rounds) has the most kick back and the slowest rate of fire. The good things about this one though is that you don't need a semi body to craft it, its still fairly cheap and it does high damage.

AUTOMATIC RIFLES: AK47, LR300. These two behave a bit differently from each other. The ak has high recoil but also has high damage, so remeber to crouch. The LR300 has much lower recoil but lower damage and accuracy. Crouching helps but is not necerssary 100% of the time.

BOLTACTION/SEMI RIFLE: The bolt action has low recoil, but a very low fire rate compared to the automatic rifles. It does however have high damage, so it is much more suited to sniping than charging around guns blazing. you dont have to crouch with this one, but it does reduce the scope sway. The semi automatic rifle has much higher recoil in comparason, so remeber to crouch when shooting. It has decent damage and a good fire rate.

SMGS: As of right now the smgs handle very similar so i won't split them apart. They have low recoil, low damage but a higher fire rate compared to the automatic rifles. I would still recomend crouching however becuase it does help with the recoil.

SHOTGUNS: There are 4 different types of shotguns in the game. The eoka pistol, single shot, crude, cheap close range shotgun. The Pipe Shotgun which is single shot, a bit more expencive but still cheap but it's much better than the eoka becuase yu dont have to wait for it to fire. you hit the trigger, it goes off, and the thing its pointing at will know about it. The double barrel handles pretty much as if you strapped two pipe shotguns together, though its more expencive. The Pump Shotgun is the only high-end shotgun.The shotgun can hold 6 rounds. The ammo they all can take are very different. The handmade shell which is considered to be the worst and can only be used in the eoka, pipe and double barrel. Buckshot is highly similar to the more expensive 12 Gauge Slug, except Buckshot is designed for close range lethality, whereas slugs are designed for long range engagements. The Slug is more expensive but it's more precise than Buckshot because it fires a single devastating projectile.

M249: This gun is probably the best in the game. It does high damage, has great bullet velocity, low recoil when crouched, and has a mag of 100. Its only, and big, drawback is that its only possible to get from shot down helicopters, meaning 9/10 times its the clans who have them.
Base buidling
Building a base is extremely important in rust as it gives you somewhere to respawn, gear up, craft and store loot safely.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • I would advise not to go straight out building your huge base design because rust is a unpredicable game. I would advise to start with a 1x2/2x2 which you can then upgrade to biggerfoundations if you want, because this gives a safe place to log off, and respawn upon your inevitable death.
  • Dont log off with your base made of wood, you almost ALWAYS will wake up raided. Wood is fine as a tempary thing, before upgrading further, used a battlements or other. Just not as the primary material of the core of your base.
  • Dont log off with wood doors on your base, they are easily destroyed. Only use them as a tempary thing until you can get a furnace going to make sheet matal doors and code locks.
  • Remeber to honeycomb or (the more advanced) wall stacking. Honey combing is where you place extra walls and foundation around your main base, meaing if a raider came from the side they would have to blow through extra walls.
  • Build in an area with plenty of rock nodes, trees and animals (or make sure these are nearby).
  • Generally its a bad idea to build up against rocks as people can then gain acces to your roof.
  • Dont have windows on the bottom storey, as it gives raiders an easy entrance/exit of your base even when upgraded.
  • Dont write your door codes on a sign somewhere in your base, as it will give a raider the codes so they dont have to blow through anything else.
  • Make sure you always have a spare key kept inside your base at all times if you are using the key lock because if you die the key you had will be on your body/in a hide-able stash outside your base. Not inside meaning you are locked in. Always remeber to recreate it once it has become your main key.
  • Don't use a foundation that when walled up can be wall climbed.
Base raiding
Base raiding is an extremely fun way to gain alot of things off other players.

You have to pick a base. -I would strongly recomend for the owner to be online when you raid as it gives good pvp, and its extremely frowned upon to offline raid-. you want to make sure that you have enough explosives to get inside (check the rust wiki to see how much of each explosive it takes to get through something). always plan for there to be atlest one airlock. honeycombing and wall stacking. you can almost always tell by the footprint of the base. a great way to find out what people generally do, and with what footprint is to have a look around already raided bases.

When raiding it is highly recomend that you have these things with you or nearby:
  • A raid base nearby, but not in line of sight if it was not designed to be used as a battlement. (somewhere to respawn, store extra guns, ammo and explosives so if you get killed or run out, you have somewhere nearby to re-arm)
  • A team (real life friends or you're naighbours in game, it is always handy to have an extra pair of hands).

Some tactics for raiding/stratigies:
If they have built against a rock, cimb on top of the base. most people have the loot at or near the top (sometimes middle if they were really thinking that people blow through the roof). also ceilings are weaker than walls so they are cheaper to blow through.
Use your enviroment (similar as above). If theres a hill nearby put a sniper on it etc.
Know when its time to go. If its likely you will lose the raid, retreat. otherwise you will just lose more loot. even if its only tempary it then allows you to come up with a new strategy.
Dont go all out. If you are a smaller group, dont take all of your very best high grade stuff becuase if you lose, youve just given that stuff to the other side to be used against you. This would be fine if you have lots of spares, but most small/solo groups dont have that.
Solo tips
I have been solo for probably 90% of my hours, and i know just how hard it can be. My advice would be build small and as strong as possible. When i play solo i personally hate gathering 40k stone to make what people would call "a safe base". Just make a 1x2/1x1 and honeycomb it, make it a couple of stories and plenty of doors and you should be fine. I dont bother making a "♥♥♥♥ shack", as i think this wastes resources which i dont want to do when soloing. Thats why i recomend making a 1x2 honeycomb base due to you can set it up cheaply, and add stuff as you get it. This can be hard but find a resource rich place without too many people building or just generally nearby (even better if near a monument). When starting out try to get a gun ASAP as it will allow you to kill other people for resources or stop them building in your area.
Pros and Cons

- good gun play
- in depth building system
- emercive sounds and enviroment
- huge amount of servers and modded game modes

Cons:
- Very toxic community
- Badly optimised, for high end and low end
- ZERGS

you point the circular end at the thing you want to die and pull the trigger. Not recomended for yourself...
