How to capture the Cat
To capture a cat (and any other monster/critter), you'll need to use a Capture Pod.

This item is crafted at the the Pet Station or found sometimes inside quest chests, and act like Pokeballs. They capture and store your pet inside the capsule forever.

In order to make it easier to capture a pet, lower their health carefully. The lowest the health, the easiest is for the capture to be successful. But pay attention not to kill the pet, or you'll have to find another.

When you're ready, throw the Capture Pod at them (you do this by equiping like a throwing weapon and pressing the left mouse button). Make sure to aim straight, or you'll have to try again.

If the capture was successful, the Capture Pod will be in your inventory, and will have a red light in its center.
Black Cat, Yellow Eyes
How to find it:
This creature only appears on the roofs of hylotl land structures:

Notice this cat has yellow eyes. It's not the same from the Mining Facility's (which is shown below).

Be careful: you must lower its HP bar before capturing it. I recommend to unequip all your armor to prevent the bonus damage, which could kill it.
White Cat, Blue Eyes
How to find it:
This creature only appears inside challenge doors, which are found underground. Go find one!
After entering a challenge door, if you are in a room where there is a rabbit and a cat on platforms, you can capture the cat (and possibly the rabbit, but you need to choose only one per room).
This is a picture of the room I'm talking about:

This cat is also different from the Mining Facility's one, having white fur and blue eyes.

Jump on the cat's platform. Be careful: you must lower its HP bar before capturing it. I recommend to unequip all your armor to prevent the bonus damage, which could kill it. I used a poison bow to weaken the cat, as it had the lowest damage of the weapons I had at the moment, and still was relatively easy to lower its life safely - but if you are prepared and is too afraid, you can get an even weaker weapon.

Here's a pic after I captured it in the challenge door:

Both cats will behave as critters and won't attack enemies.

Now you can have a cute kitty following you around while you explore the universe! :)
Bonus: How to make your Cat (almost) immortal
Are you tired of your cute cat dying over and over?
Want to have it always in your side without the annoying monsters attacking it?
Here is the solution!

Obtain an Oblivious Collar (collars are pet auguments). This collar can be found randomly inside chests on planets, and is equipped by left-clicking it, then right clicking on the capture pod of the pet you want to put the collar on.

This collar makes any pet (monster or critter) passive, meaning it won't attack anymore. But it also makes it invulnerable to any enemy monster's attacks!
As the Cats are already passive monsters, this item is great for them.
But be careful with lava, as it will still hurt and possibly kill them.

may i also note that you can just spawn a cat in using the pet interface for your ship, capture it, and spawn back another pet?

Thank you! I found a cat by accident on a roof, and without this article, would have never expected that it was possible to use capture pods on them!

Author, your English was good and I enjoyed the wit and spirit conveyed by your phrasing. I wouldn't have known you weren't a native speaker if it weren't for your note at the end. I'd be very curious, if you don't mind telling, what your native language is - I love languages and I love learning about them and what it's like to learn them or learn English coming from that language.
