Introduction
Thank you for reading this guide. So you just spawned in to the new large Russian map created by Nelson and some community members. You look out to the shores and think "Wow, this is already so beautiful". You run to the closest farm and instantly get mauled by zombies. Rest in peace. After some rinse and repeat you realise that on difficulties higher than Easy, this map is difficult. That's why I have created this guide. See below for starting off early, or if you are on a PvP server, skip down to the Multiplayer section. Let's get started
1. From the Shore
After starting up your world, head straight inland. Considering all the spawns are shoreline, and there are many farms/camps just inland, you will most likely come across one within 2 minutes of running. Theres no time to waste so run straight in. If you see a lighthouse head there as I have found it useful in every single new beginning so far. Dealing with zombies with your fist is a bad idea unless you are experienced but even then it can be difficult as the Russian zombies seem to be faster than other maps. That means priorities should be on finding some weapons and clothes. Any weapon can do as it allows zombie stun, which has saved my lives many times before and will probably save yours. The best find would be a bow/crossbow. Just line up a headshot and that zombie is dead. Retrieve your arrow and continue. Plus these weapon are silent so no additional attention is drawn. Once you have the basics, (Basic clothes, weapon) you can start heading further inland via roads. Every single farm has a road leading to either St. Petersburg or Moscow, which should be your destination for the time being. I suggest avoid small towns like Novobirsk and Jhavesk. If you were lucky enough to start at a camp instead of a farm, you might have found yourself a chart map. Use this and head straight to St. Petersburg, which typically has better loot spawns than Moscow, and you can also explore the underground if you have a torch, which is a great source of high end military clothing. This should set you up for Section 2, Inland.
2. Inland Shenanigans
Now you should be at a city. Exploring these shoul allow you to find some guns which you can use (if you chose to) or scrap for future building. There are some awesome new things in the map that you will definitely see in these cities e.g The new wire cabinets, some of the new buildings and if you are lucky, a new vehicle. So far none of these vehicles have disapointed me so feel free to use any of them. You should have most likely found a GPS at one of these 2 cities (though I prefer charts anyway) and you should probably head to Firewatch or Zavod, depending on which is closer. Zavod is preferred as it has heaps of ranger spawns and you are pretty much certain to get full military gear. From here you should just explore wherever you want, with notable new locations being Keryev mine, Yorkuta Junction and Krovi Estate, though Krovi is dangerously close to a large deadzone which will be covered in a section ahead. If you thinking of beginning on a base, read the next section. If you would like to advance further in gear first, read the one after
3. Permanent Residency
So now you have some resources (and hopefully a blowtorch and crafting III, you will need them if you want a metal base) and are looking to find a flat peice of land to settle on. And then you realise. Nothing in this map is flat. There are no flat locations. Everywhere is hill after hill after hill. Well there is one solution. The top of almost every hill is pretty much flat, and they have some great views. Most prominently, Mount Nivek, a rocky mountain over looking Moscow (well, if your render distance is up). Its peak its a great place to build a base. Building a base is a complicated process of decision making and choices. Should you turn this scrap into metal sheets or metal bars? How many times do I need to click this to get the right amound of wooden planks? First bases dont need to be exact, or precise and because you will probably be building out of a city, there wont be any zombies pestering you (and Mount Nivek has a moat, which is great for a PvP base, but I will cover that further in the guide) Most of the time I try and build huge metal bases that take 7 hours and I can be super proud of, but that is a bit different in Russia. Metal is a pretty easy to come by resource in almost every map if you know where to look. "Knowing where to look" ususally involved making this decision. What do I need to keep and what can I scrap down just because I can? This is usually a pretty easy decision as you should have found about 5 3scrap weapons by now and you should scrap them on the spot. Make 6 pillars, 2 floors, 5 walls, 1 doorway, a door and 2 roofs. No matter what material this should be what you go for. Just leave it at that. Don't get greedy or it will take too long. Save scrap for luxuries like full weapon durability. Once you have finished this, read on with section 4
4. Dead people, Dead trees, Deadzones.
By now, if you have explored the map the way I have, you have probably found that the mid-north of the map is slightly "inaccessable". This issue is created with the addition of DEADZONES (SPOOOOKY!!). These places are dangerous thanks to the power of nuclear fallout. It's easy to assume this as all of the locations have some kind of nuclear accident clear to have happened, though Nelson has never really given a proper explaination of why they are so dangerous, so we might never find out the truth. "But what IS a Deadzone?" I hear you ask. Well, in the rare locations where deadzones are found, all zombies in the area explode into green goo when killed (Sorry, melee users). This Hurts. A lot. But the main issue is that when standing in a deadzone without protection, your infection bar drains rapidly and then when it runs out your health just depletes like crazy. The only current protection is Biohazard suits, which slow your infection loss, and Gasmasks These can be found in Fire Stations, so be sure to check them and go to Firewatch regularly, as they are extremely rare. Gasmasks deplete durability while in deadzones but you only lose infection when they are 0% durability. Don't worry, though. Their durability can be refilled with Filters by Left clicking with one in your hand while wearing a mask. Now, while wearing a mask with limited filters, don't waste a filter when you get to say, 54% durability. Filters fill it to full so save it to the last minute for the full effect. Now you might be thinking "Weide, why would I want to risk my life by going into a deadzone". That is because deadzones have some of the rarest loot spawns in the game, and in large numbers too. There is also a deadzone location that allows you to get American Military Gear on a Russian Ranger Military map. This can be good for anyone who refuses to make the switch to the clearly superior like some christian mother refusing to let a local doctor immunise her child even though it's for the greater good. However the best russian deadzone is easily the Oil Rig off the shore right south of Kivgrad Harbour. It has a sunken submarine below it (Possibly the source of its radiation) and is only accessible by means of flight. However, every time I have gone to this location, I have returned with at least 3 fully attatched weapons and most of the time like a detonator and some flashbangs. It's pretty safe to say it's got alot of good gear. Deadzones in general are great ways to get some great loot if you are lucky enough to find gasmasks and filters. The loot found in them is great for PvP servers, which are covered in the next Section
5. 1vEveryone
So there are already heaps of Russia servers available in the Unturned Community, and you may feel obliged to join the hype and have a go on the largest official map in PvP action. So you just spawned in and started on a shore (of course, all the spawns are shoreline). You begin to head inland following the instructions of the previous 4 sections when BAM. You just got Ekho'd from halfway across Moscow. Welcome back to PvP. Here are some quick and simple tips to stop you from falling into the same PvP trap as the rest of the maps.
1. STAY AWAY FROM ROADS. This rule I cannot stress enough. The only safe route is to cross roads and never travel along them. If you can, just avoid them in general. Even in towns, stay between buildings and only enter open areas when looting.
2. DO EVERYTHING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Don't be slow. Looting a police station? Don't sit there deciding on whether to wear a newly found police vest or a civilian vest. Make up your mind and get out of there. The most dangerous thing you can do on a PvP server is stay in one spot.
3. NEVER STICK TO JUST FIRST PERSON. In an actual PvP situation, a good player can beat a bad player in any situation, no matter what the situation. A player who uses 3rd Person effectively but is using a Colt (The worst weapon by the way) will still win againts a player using a Fusilaut (One of the strongest weapons) any day of the week. I will give you an example that actually happened to me last night playing on Russia. I was in a firefight with a person and I had a Bulldog. The bulldog is almost useless at medium-long range and he had an Augwheur. Not a good situation. However after running round a corner and peeking around with 3rd person, I was able to beat this person. It a simple positioning trap and this is one of the most simple handicaps you will have if you dont use 3rd Person. Sick of scope sway? Get your hands on a tight spread gun and lay down in 3rd person. Zoom in without a scope and you have an accurate spread, good FOV and no sway at all. There are many uses of 3rd person and using them all effectively is a difficult achievment. But hey, why not start today, right?
and finally,
4. DONT BE AN IDIOT. Oh the countless times I've just joined a server to make some friends to find that there is a dominating group that basically owns the server and I feel the need to just oppose them with the power of friendship. THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. Always remember to stay on high alert on PvP servers. If you see something suspicious, (e.g open cuboards, Empty magazines, vehicle debris) then dont be afraid to just NOPE the F*ck out of there. Always keep an eye on hills with binoculars and if you see night vision just leave. There's no point taking risks on a map where it takes about 15 minutes to get back to military locations. So don't be stupid.
For the final point, take notes as they are important to keep track of.
6. General Information
So in this final section, I will cover just everything you might need to know that I haven't covered previously. I will have an *** at the end of all notable points. So at every stage in your Russia exploration remember to scrap down all clothes and weapons you don't need***. Invest points prioritising offence skills like Exercise and Diving before Sharpshooter and then max Food***. Don't eat foods below 50% durability, they are unsafe. Learn to attack-move with melee in the case of death and lack of weapons***. If you are looking for specific weapons, don't be afraid to use my good friend Google. Remember to keep an eye on your resource bars regularly. Don't melee flame zombies. Don't waste Stealy Wheelies. Remeber to check Firewatch regularly, it's probably the only good source of masks. Also visit Krovi Estate often checking for vehicles. If there are vehicles that are sitting there locked or out of fuel and you know you wont use them, destroy them, new vehicles only respawn when others are destroyed***. Prioritise finding fuel efficient cars over fast ones, as the map is large and there are little fuel stations I can find. Don't forget to check underground areas. AAND MOST OF ALL********** HAVE FUN GUYS.
