Introduction
I recently seen on these forums that the character skin was saved locally, So I decided to see if I could edit it with photoshop (or any image editor would work).

Thanks very much @rogermorse for posting the location of the skin save!

So I started screwing around & checked in game and seen that yes it works!.

I hope others try this as well, as it can give you a really cool look in game.

Here is what my character looks like now, he still has a grey colour, black skin, my name & Scottish flag. but damn he looks good now haha.

Follow the instructions bellow to learn how to achieve this.
The setup for editing
First off, you are going to need an image editor! I would suggest that you use Gimp. It is a free and high-performance piece of software that is fantastic for editing images. For this guide, I am going to use Gimp to demonstrate the way to do it.

First, go in game and colour you character something like this.

Doing this will make the whole process of editing so much easier as you will see further on in the guide.

The Editing
First navigate to C:\Users\Your name here\AppData\LocalLow\NoBrakesGames\Human & BACKUP the file named characterTexture0.png, Make a new folder and drop a copy in it. Just to make life simpler.

Click here[www.gimp.org] to go to the Gimp homepage to download the software.

One you have downloaded and installed Gimp open it.

Click File > Open

Click in the middle of the window and make sure that "Show hidden files".
Check picture bellow.

When that is turned on navigate to

C:\Users\Your name here\AppData\LocalLow\NoBrakesGames\Human & open characterTexture0.png

You will get something like this when it opens, the picture below also points out what each part of the image is.

Please read the following carefully :)

Ok, now you have your image open in the editor.
Edit to your liking and when you are done go to File > Export As > Click the file named characterTexture0.png then click Export.

You will get a message asking you if you would like to replace the file, click Replace, another message will pop up click Export again. This has now replaced your starter skin with the new one you have made! Keep Gimp open, you will see why underneath.

Go in game and look at your creation, because the skin is wrapped around a 3D model your skin may look a bit strange, simply fixed! Remember that I asked you to keep Gimp open? Well, this is because you can just go back to edit it and then repeat the export process.

A simple trick so you don't have to close and open the game every time you edit, is to go between the main menu and customise menu. Each time you do this it will reload the skin from file.

Remember if you are more comfortable with photoshop or some other editor use them, the process is the same. Editing the skin can be a bit awkward to do at first, but after a couple goes around you will be fine!

Closing notes
Well, folks that's you done! Have fun and experiment with your skins.

As a added extra, Heres a good idea for you, save duplicate copys of every skin you make into a folder so that you can apply a skin at will & not have to make a new one every time!

I made this guide so that everyone else can experience the fun of being able to customize their character the way they wanted and accurately!

As you see you can import images, draw freehand or write with text. More or less anything you want to have you can!

Here is the one I made while making this guide!

This is my 2nd guide after my "All Achievements Guide" Click here for that guide.

I enjoy writing these guides, If you have any ideas of other guides & or videos that could be helpful please leave a comment and I will get back to you ASAP.

If this has helped you please leave some feedback & a thumbs up so I can know if I should keep creating guides for Human:Fall Flat.

Please post your comments & creations bellow, I would love to see what everyone has dreamed up!

Regards Andy.

By the way, the trick to fixing broken (red and white) skins is to either reduce the color palette or reduce the image resolution. For example, I couldn't import a full-color 2048x2048 image, even after reducing it to 256 colors, but it worked by reducing the colors to 64 and the resolution to 512x512. Just play around with the resolution (you may need to keep it to powers of two such as 512x512, 1024x1024, and 2048x2048) and the color palette (try 128, 64, or 32 colors) and you should find one that both loads properly and looks decent.
