"I got the opportunity to play Cactus Canyon Continued at league a couple of weeks ago, and I set the Grand Champion score at 126 million. The previous GC score, set by the owner, a fellow league member, was 71 million. ;P

Cactus Canyon was released by Bally in 1998, and it had a limited production run (only 903 machines), because production was stopped short to begin the "Pinball 2000" project, so it's a pretty rare and valuable pin in the collector market (~$10,000 used). Unfortunately, it shipped with incomplete code that was never fleshed out and polished by the manufacturer. The hardware had great potential, but the software wasn't very good.

Cactus Canyon Continued is an aftermarket code update developed 4 years ago by a pinball enthusiast in Wisconsin, Eric Priepke, who expanded and completed the original code to improve the gameplay. I was fortunate enough to have Eric watching me play that night, and he held the GC score steady on the DMD with the flippers while I focused the camera for this photo. :)

Eric's new code is awesome! It contains new gameplay, sound, and dots, including Cowboys vs Aliens Multiball and Drunk Multiball, which reverses the flippers. More info in the link below:

What a blast! If you ever get a chance to play Cactus Canyon Continued, you won't regret it.

Happy flipping, pinheads!"

BuBbleGum, this particular league member had an immaculate collection. Several high end restorations of rare games. I was drooling at the quality of the games that we were all playing that night.

Stray_pengo, I agree. It was a transformational period in the industry. Some innovative but risky business decisions were made, and some ended up yielding a very negative result.

Blinky, if you decide to stay in Chicago, I will invite you to join the league, and you'll be able to play a bunch of wonderful and rare pins in our league members' private collections. :beatmeat:

Bally's creativity was certainly on a roll until the fateful P2K came out. A sad case where quality was not rewarded with a successful business.
