Base Location
Once you join the server you want to move as far as you can from the coast because other players will try to kill you.The best base location is usually found in the desert/snow biomes because they are packed with resources that you need to build a base.
I prefer building in caves in the beginning of the game because they provide solid protection and loot spawns around them so you can gather it from time to time. Some caves also have water in them so you can put down Survival fish traps (unlocked at level 2) that provide a simple food source.
Here are some images of caves in RUST:
Basics
So you found your perfect base location, now you need resources in order to make your dream base, follow the steps below:
  • You want to start chopping wood/rocks and gather hemp herbs around the place in order to level up quickly.
  • Once you reach level 3 you will be able to make some new tools (stone hatchet/pickaxe) that will help you gather more resources even faster.
  • By now you should have probably been gathering resources for atleast 15 minutes and you should be level 5.This means that you can make a furnace, but first you need to hunt some wildlife.I suggest going for Deer/Horses/Boars and staying away from Wolves/Bears if you spot them.In order to hunt these animals you will need to make a wooden spear which you unlock at level 2.
  • Okay so now you have some animal fat and some wood/stone to start making the base!
First thing you wanna do is place the foundations correctly if you are building in a cave and block off all the entrances so that unwanted guests cant enter your lovely home. This also means that u MUST upgrade the walls/foundations/ceilings into stone tier if possible so that other players cant break through these parts of your base. (You also need to hide your Tool Cupboard to maintain the privilege around your cave).
  • Once you do that you want to place some furnaces and start smelting metal fragments so you can make sheet metal door and a code lock later in the game (placing a wooden door with a basic lock at the beginning is a good way to keep players out,tho keep in mind that they can break through the wooden door).
Leveling and XP points
So now you know the basics of starting out in RUST but you still need to learn something more about the XP system,so lets get over the best ways to level up!
  • Barrels and boxes: Breaking and searching through these gives you a solid amount of experience/progression (both for level and xp points) and it provides some solid loot. You can find these in rad towns or around your cave base.

  • Hunting animals: We mentioned animals previously and yes hunting them gives a solid amount of experience the animals that give the most are Bears/Wolves.Killing wolves also gives you wolf skulls (ussualy 1 or 2 per wolf),crushing these skulls also gives a lot of experince.
  • Crafting: Crafting items provides some experience, but keep in mind crafting the same item over and over again makes it give less and less experience, while crafting an item for the first or second time gives much more.
  • Another great way to earn XP points is to give tools to other players,so when they mine resources with YOUR tools you get a small portion of exp.
Advanced base building
Now that we have explained the XP system a little bit,its time to explain the basics of advanced base building.

  • One of the most important things for large bases are Honeycombs and Airlocks, you want to have a few of these in order to keep the loot in your base safe. Also keep in mind that you want your loot room on the 4th or 5th floor of the base so that raiders cant get to it right off the bat.

  • Another important thing for the large base is the Tool Cupboard. If you are building a large base u will need to have a few of these bad boys around and inside the base in order to maintain the building privilege, you want to place the main Cupboard on the...lets say 3rd or 4th floor and the decoy one on the first floor inside the honeycomb. That way it makes it hard for the raiders to estimate the correct location of your Cupboard!
  • If you dont wanna waste resources in rust and you just wanna plan out the base,my suggestion is downloading Fortify. It is a building simulator designed for RUST and it is the best one out there! Here is the link to the website: https://www.reddit.com/r/fortify/
Raiding
Raiding is the end-game content in rust, and there is nothing better than the feeling of grabbing someone's loot!

  • If you are a solo player you might wanna consider looking for some people to play with or try making friends with someone on the server you are playing on,because solo raiding is a suicide.
  • The next thing u want to know is that vanilla servers ''usually'' dont have a lot of big bases, and many of them have wooden door's or wooden parts of the house, and as a solo raider you can break through these in the matter of minutes and secure the loot!
  • If in any case you are raiding a big base, you will need C4 and Rockets, but if the base has sheet metal door's,you can also use Beancan or Frag grenades (keep in mind raiding with these might take a while).

  • And finally there are two types of raiding:Offline and Online raiding
I suggest Offline raiding for solo players and ofcourse Online raiding for a group of players that want some challenge!

Hope you enjoyed my RUST guide and i hope you found it somewhat helpfull!
