Setting Flightplan and Autopilot to follow route
Da KobY
First you press alt, select flights, and flight planner.

Then you fill out the form by selecting Origin, Destination, Flight Rules, Routing Method. then generate the flight plan.

Set your cruising altitude near the bottom of the window, then click ok and save the flight plan

Decide if you want fsx to move your plane to the destination you selected (WARNING if you were not careful and selected a gate, it will move you to the active runway.)

Next open your GPS window and make sure the magenta line looks good. now would be the time you set up your approach and ILS frequencies. i will talk about how to do that, but if you dont want to know, feel free to skip to the dashed line below.

On the GPS, Press PROC(edure), then ENT(er) to select an approach, and use the outer scroll on the bottom right of the gps to select what runway you would like to land on. then press ENT to select it. Do the same with the transition for the STAR, or just select vectors. Finally, press ENT once again to select load. Finally, press FPL(flight plan) to hide the flightplan.

Now to set your NAV1 frequency to the runway ILS frequency from the GPS (without opening the map). First click the right side of the outer scroll wheel, then use the inner scroll wheel to select the third bar from the right (the bars are on the bottom of the GPS screen)

Now click the PUSH CRSR to activate the cursor, and scroll down with the outer scroll bar till you have highlighted the entry that says ILS <runway>, so if you chose runway 28R, then you would select ILS 28R and press ENT.

Now left click the outer scroll window to return to the map page.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can close the GPS window now, you wont need it till your about 200 NM away from the airport. Before you take off, look around and find a switch that says NAV/GPS.
By default it is on NAV, but it wont align with the GPS unless it is on GPS mode.

Once you find it switch it to GPS mode.

After you are in the air and wish to align with the GPS, find and press the button, which can say many things. on the Airbus A321 it says LOC, on the boeing 737 it says VOR LOC, On the boeing 747 it says NAV, and on other aircraft it should take only a few seconds to find out what it is, but on light aircraft keep in mind that all the A/P commands are on the radio stack except for the NAV/GPS switch.

Finally, press the button to activate the autopilot. it usually says AP or A/P MASTER, but if you cant find it you can press the Z key on your keyboard. Your plane should be flying the GPS course. Congrats!

When you are about 200 NM away from the airport, press PROC again, then press ENT to select vectors to final. you aircraft will begin to line up with the runway. When you set your nav 1 frequency it set it to standby, so you should switch it to the active about 30 NM away from the airport.Re-open the GPS window and when you are on the magenta line(i will put a picture dont worry.) switch the NAV/GPS switch to NAV.

When the magenta line switches from magenta to white, find and click the approach hold button. It generally says APR. The plane should descend towards the runway. About 200 ft from the ground you should switch off the autopilot and the auto throttle and land the plane manually, seeing how default aircraft wont flair the aircraft for a smooth touchdown, or cut the throttle at the right time.

About 50 ft from the ground, you should cut the throttle to idle, and at 20 ft, you should flair about 3 degrees for a good landing.

If anyone else can provide useful links on how to set up a complete flight (start-up, pre-flight, takeoff, landing, after landing, taxiing, gate, and shutdown), please do so. It will be very appreciated. Trying to learn and want to do it with clear instructions.

@Sash20063 Lots of people still play FSX. I find myself playing it just as much or more than FS2020 sometimes. Main reasons for me are due to the huge variety of add-on aircraft not available yet for FS2020 I can fly and the Orbx scenery I have and also other add-on's like Accu Sim that make FSX so much better than playing the in the default configuration.

There are several bugs in Flight Simulator 2020 when you try to change the destination during mid flight.
One of them is that ATC asks you to go via a new waypoint far off from the destination airport.

In this video is shown how you can do it correctly: https://youtu.be/hdKxpqphod0

It is also discussed on a blog: www.puresimgamer.net
