Priority- What it is and how to use it.
Von OmniPie
This is a guide on priority which basically describes how hitbox and hurtbox interactions work. I am level 100 and have over 1k hours so I am very familiar with how they work in this game. I hope this guide helps you guys and if it does please give it a thumbs up!

I also have an informative stream dedicated to helping newer players, and youtube for guides.

Introduction
Introduction- Have you ever wondered why hammer recovery seems to have so much priority or how that katar player seems to always hit you first? Then this is the guide for you. This guide goes into detail to explain about hitboxes and hurtboxes interaction and what affects them the most.
What priority is in Brawlhalla
In this game a move doesn’t really have priority over another move because hitboxes don’t actually collide, they just pass through each other.

However, if two players hit each other at the same time as in one player uses a move that hits the other players hurtbox and vice versa at the same time then it
will first use the higher strength of the players to determine who wins
but if they are the same then it will see who is less damaged and if they’re both equal then the moves just cancel each other out while still applying damage.

This is extremely rare however and can’t really be controlled so instead what most players in brawlhalla means by priority is whose hitbox will hit their enemy’s hurtbox first.
Priority Factor- Range
When two moves start hitting at a decent range from each other, assuming both players have decent spacing and can hit at max range, the move with the greater range will win.
This is why weapons that can hit longer range often prefer to hit at max range so that their move has the best priority.

The best example of this is on guns. When it comes to horizontal range, guns have several moves that can hit incredibly far away. One move in particular can hit almost twice as far as a sword nlight.

The only other weapon that can compete at max range horizontally is the bow with its dlight which can hit about 14% farther away.

So when you’re on the ground and facing either a bow or guns, make sure you don’t try to fight them at max range or you will most likely get out prioritized.
Instead get closer because priority doesn’t just depend on range, it also depends on startup frames.
Other Priority Factor- Start up frames
In this game there is 60 frames per second and every attack has frames that they need to wait after you input the move to begin their hitboxes, these are called start up frames.

These frames vary depending on the weapons and are the other factor that determines priority in Brawlhalla.
Instead of both players being able to hit at max range, let’s say they are already in the middle of battle and are both pretty close to each other so,
both moves will hit the enemy’s hurtbox if both their hitboxes come out at the same time.

In this scenario the move with more range doesn’t win but the move who's hitboxes come out first wins so moves with less start up frames has a definite advantage
because the move with less startup frames will have hitboxes come out quicker therefore hitting the enemy’s hurtbox before their opponent’s hitboxes comes out effectively giving them priority.

Keep in mind though that if a player uses a move that has more start up frames but they input the move a certain amount of frmaes before the enemy input theirs then they could still hit first.

The best example of startup priority is unarmed because it’s nlight has 3 startup frames which is the shortest of any move, it’s dair has 5 startup frames and it’s nair has 6 startup frames.

This means that in close range combat with two players of equal skills, the one with unarmed will more likely come out on top vs other weapons.
The short version
With all of this in mind, you can achieve optimal priority on your attacks by understanding how fast your moves come out and how far their hurtboxes extend.

If you are in a match up where your weapon has better range than your opponent then position yourself a bit farther away when attacking, if you are in a match up where you have less range but less start up frames then position yourself closer when attacking.

If you guys enjoyed this guide then please give it a thumbs up!

Yeah aer0 I included that in the "What priority is in Brawlhalla section" Whoever is less damaged will have more priority.
