CS:GO Chickens - In-Depth Guide

Their History

Chickens have been a part of Counter-Strike since its beginning. It all started when Counter-Strike (originally named Half-Life: Counter Strike) was still in beta.

Counter-Strike Beta 6.5: The birth of chickens.

GlenC (Glen Cooper) and DigiChaos (Jaison Green) were two avid CS players who got together and used their technical abilities in map creation to create one of the most loved and oldest CS maps: Italy.
Italy was officially released July 8, 2000 alongside CS Beta 6.5, a couple months before the game went out of beta.
This new map brought a unique atmosphere which made CS players feel emerged into real life scenarios, but that was not the only important aspect of Italy, Chickens were also introduced as part of the map. Little did the creators know that they crated the most loved CS gimmick to date.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero : Chickens are here to stay.

Italy remained a part of the map pool of the next iteration of CS, and chickens were not taken out, making this an important precedent for chickens. GlenC, DigiChaos, and Ritual Entertainment were given the task to redesign Italy, this brought a more renovated look to chickens and the map as a whole.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes : Chickens play a bigger role.

When the expansion pack Deleted Scenes was added to CS: Condition Zero it came with Easter eggs. Chickens were included in these Easter eggs, more specifically two.

First Easter egg: In the third mission, Secret War, a chicken is located on top of the silo entrance near the Dual Berettas. One pile of boxes will have a single metallic crate stacked on top of three others against the wall. Once said box is destroyed, the chicken will exposed. If killed it will make several sheep bleating noises, gibbing and spreading feathers on the spot.
      
Second Easter egg: This time in the mission Motorcade Assault, while in the sewers, the first tunnel in which the player enters will have a stack of boxes by its end. Climbing on top of them will allow the player to see the chicken hidden behind them. If killed, it will make a headshot sound.
      

Counter Strike: Source: No chickens! What?!?

November 1, 2004 saw the official release of CS: Source, which included an updated view of Italy, but Valve decided they weren't going to include chickens. Many mods were developed by the community regarding chickens due to this.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive: Chickens play their biggest role.

The latest, and by far most popular iteration of the CS series, CS:GO brought a completely overhaul to Italy, with new graphics, design, and most importantly the chickens were re-introduced. Not only were they brought back, but multiple chickens now spawned on multiple points on the map.
Due to the increased outcry for chickens and their popularity, Valve, expanded their presence into other maps and gave them more features.

Where can you find Chickens?

Currently chickens spawn, regardless on the game mode, in:

• Italy
  
• Militia
  
• Inferno
  
• Rush

When playing deathmatch Chickens spawn in any map, and award 1 point for killing them.

Recently Valve added one of the best features to date regarding chickens: the ability to follow you.
By pressing the "e" key, or use key, while standing next to a chicken and looking at it, the chicken will follow you. If neither you nor the chicken dies then it will spawn again next round enxt to you. If the chicken is killed the following message will appear:

As a special Easter egg, 2 chickens appear hanging on Italy's market in reference to the original chickens in Counter-Strike Beta 6.5 created with the GoldenSrc engine.

Chickens and Operations

CS:GO brought a whole new level of interactions to chickens. They went from being a cool part of Italy, to having their own missions during operations. Before Operation Vanguard missions would randomly appear consisting on killing chickens with various different weapons. Starting Operation Vanguard chickens has their own specific missions; which are:

Operation Vanguard

• In the Vanguard campaign, one of the first missions is a Supply Run mission, requiring 20 confirmed chicken kills in Deathmatch on Active duty maps. A Vertigo collection skin is awarded along with a mission unlock.
  
• An identical mission is available during the same operation in the Eurasia Theater campaign. Two missions are unlocked for its completion and an Operation Vanguard Weapon Case is awarded.

Operation Bloodhound

• In The Prodigal Son (Marksman), the player is tasked by Sebastien Hennequet to get 50 confirmed human or chicken kills in Deathmatch on operation maps. Should it be completed, Tools of the Trade is unlocked along with 300 XP. Every chicken kill awards an additional 3 XP.
  
• Another mission is during Fowl Play (Marksman), the player is tasked by Booth to kill 300 chickens in Deathmatch on operation maps. Should it be completed, A Most Violent Interview is unlocked, and 600 XP is awarded. Going on chicken killing streaks of 2 or more awards 1 additional XP.

Operation Wildfire

• In Operation: Falling Sky (Wildfire), Felix Riley tasks the player with killing 10 chicken, wanting them off the battlefield while expressing a clear distaste for them.

Holidays and Special Events

The community loves chickens, and Valve knows this, so to give into the holiday spirits Valve gives them special outfits, costumes, items, and skins to celebrate those events.

Halloween 2013

Halloween 2013 was the very first event in which Valve surprised the whole CS:GO community and released a special chicken with a white robbed ghost costume.

Winter Offensive Update

On December 18th, 2013 Valve released a big update to CS:GO a new mission, new maps, new skins, new case, new gift packages, and many other features.
An undocumented, and very exciting, change was the following:

• Added miscellaneous holiday themed updates to all maps including reindeer chickens and holiday bulbs.

CS:GO's 2014 Birthday

August 21 is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's birthday, and in 2014 they released the following update:

• Several temporary cosmetic changes in celebration of CS:GO's birthday:
  
  • Chickens are wearing birthday caps and explode with confetti when shot
    
  • Tasers produce a sparkler and confetti type effect when used
    
  • C4 produces party balloons and an added noisemaker sound when defused
• The Zeus x27 is allowed to be purchased in Competitive and its price has been reduced from $1,000 to $100.

Halloween 2014

Valve took the chickens to the next level with this update. They made is so that killing a chicken makes it respawn as a zombie chicken appearing with green feathers, yellow eyes and a twisted feet. It digs itself out of the ground when spawning, crawls slowly with its wings leaning forth and explodes in a green cloud of feathers when killed again.

Winter Update 2015

On December 8th, Valve published a big Winter update which included chickens with sweaters featuring winged cutters motives on the top (Counter-Terrorist emblem) and double crossed knives motives on the bottom (Terrorist emblem).

Easter 2015

For Easter holiday 2015, Valve released an update on March 17, which included the following regarding chickens:

• Added festive chickens.

This gave chickens rabbit ears and are given a bunny hopping animation.
