How to edit your PC saves. FFXED in an easier way (New game+, superhard mode, custom Sphere grid, custom weapons, etc) [UPDATED]

This guide will show you how to edit your PC save files with FFXED so you can get awesome stuff, for example:

• Create a New Game+ (start over a game keeping your inventory and stats)
  
• Edit the Sphere grid and the stats of the characters to be on Super Hard mode
  
• Create any weapon you like, with normally unavailable powers and skins (make Yuna use Masamune, or Wakka launch a Cactuar)
  
• Edit your Blitzball Team
  
• Teletransport yourself to any point of Spira, in any given moment in the main story
  
• Try the Auron Room yourself!
  
• Use FFVII Cloud's weapon
  
• Much more, your imagination is the limit

1.- Introduction

Hi there!

First of all, this is my first guide, and my native language is Spanish, so I'm sorry if I make any mistakes, I appreciate all the support and feedback I can receive, I update the guide periodically whenever I find something new or someone points at some mistake I made. If you like the guide, make sure to like it! Press that hand! 👍

If this is the first time you play the game, my recommendation is: don't cheat. Don't use FFXED nor the in-game cheats that Square-Enix added to Squaresoft's best game. Enjoy playing the game, enjoy getting annoyed because that boss is difficult. enjoy being afraid of not being able to reach the next save point. All that adds a lot to the experience. Cheat ONLY when you know the whole game. When you love it so much that replaying it would be both boring but enjoyable. Then, cheating with FFXED will make it interesting again.

Since July 2019, FFXED creator Fuzzymillipede has reappeared and when he read this guide he decided to update FFXED so it can open and save the PC files natively. So now, this guide will be more a guide on "What you can do with FFXED" and less "how to open FFXHD saves with FFXED". However, for those that read this for the first time and are courious enough to read about what we had to do previously to edit our saves, I created a copy of the guide before I rebuilt it where you can see what the process was:

2.- What do I need?

This is the list of things you need:

• First of all, obviously, you need the FFX HD game ;P
  
• Second and last, you need the FFXED[forums.pcsx2.net] v0.748 editor (requires java).
  
  And believe it or not, that's all you need!

3.- Opening the save files with FFXED (and loading them later in FFX HD)

Ok, this is quite easy. After you downloaded FFXED.jar, make sure you have Java[www.java.com] installed and up to date.

First of all CREATE A BACKUP OF THE FILE YOU'LL EDIT. FFXED is able to force the game do things it was no supposed to do, so I take NO responsibility if you lose your save because you didn't back it up.

The savefile location is
C:\Users\*****\Documents\SQUARE ENIX\FINAL FANTASY X&X-2 HD Remaster
Each file is named after it's ingame save slot (ffx_000 is the autosave).


Double click on FFXED.jar and FFXED should open.

Browse your savefile location, and here you'll see your savefiles (as you can see, I backup my savefiles by making a copy and adding ".bak" after the name), select the file you want to edit and click "Load".

4.- What kind of things can FFXED do?

Disclosure: What kind of things cannot FFXED do?

FFXED is a save editor, not a mod. It doesn't change how the game behaves, it just changes the savefile. You can do some wild stuff with it, but that's due to how game development works. However some stuff is hardcoded into the game, so no matter how hard you want to change the main character model, this tool will not do it, because the main character model is not defined in the save file.

Well, if this is the first time you use FFXED, you will be amazed. If you have already used it, you will see that something doesn't work. You can't change characters names anymore, the game corrects them.
[17/Jul/2019] UPDATE: This has been fixed in the last version of FFXED. Now you can edit any name and it will be saved.

I don't know if any other feature has been deprecated, but I suspect not. If someone finds something that doesn't work, please, tell me and I'll add it to the guide.

Ok so let's start with the basics of the editor. Whenever you change something, you must confirm the change pressing the button 'Apply' or 'Apply and Close'. This is important, because sometimes you'll forget to press it before changing to some other character/weapon, etc, and you'll have to edit everything again. The difference between 'Apply' and 'Apply and Close' is that 'Apply' keeps the current menu open and 'Apply and Close' closes the current menu and goes back to the main menu. But both "save" the changes made (not in the save file yet, to save all your changes you must press 'Save' or 'Save as' in the main menu).

4.1.- Characters

Here we have some sections. The first thing you want to do is select what Character you want to edit. In this example, it's Tidus (you have to press 'Apply' to save any changes before changing this slidebar to another character). Right below there's a field named 'Name'. This allows you to change the name of the characters. Not just Tidus, but any character of the party.

Right below you can select wich overdrive mode your character is equipped with. At it's right, in the center of the window, you can edit the counters to unlock the overdrive modes, or even unlock them directly by checking their checkboxes.

Party

In the 'Party' section you can edit your party (duh). Doesn't matter which part of the story you are in, you can put anyone in your team but I think this could give you some trouble if you placed Seymour in your party before Kimhari fights in his first battle in Kilika. Feel free to experiment with it; you can even place Aeons in your team!!! You don't need to summon them now!

Abilities

The 'Abilities' field is self explanatory, you can make any character learn any Ability (this doesn't activate the sphere grid nodes of the Abilities, though, but it'll be usable in the battle). This will let you do weird things, like aeons will be able to use items, or let them escape the battle.

NOTE: There are also enemy abilities that you can use, normally unavailable for the party. But you can't get them here, go see the Item section of the guide to see how to get them there.

Stats

The 'Stats' field is also self-explanatory with some exceptions. It's worth mentioning that the 'Current HP' and 'Current MP' stats are NOT the Max HP and MP available for the character. That's calculated from the sphere grid HP and MP nodes unlocked. The Sphere level stats are: the first one, the S.LV available to spend in the sphere grid, and the second one, the hidden level your character is (The higher the number, the more AP you need to get a new S.LV. 'Overdrive Gauge' it's also self-explanatory. The left one is the current percentage of the overdrive bar, and the right one is the size of the overdrive bar (but changing this second bar is always counterproductive[www.gamefaqs.com]). Don't change it unless you're trying to make the game more difficult.
'Poison Damage' is an interesting thing to play with. Usually, poison takes 25% of your max health from you in each turn, but here you can edit that percentage, making some characters more resistant to poison than others for example.
The only "interesting" thing left in this section is the 'Affection' stat. That's a statistic that changes through the game and makes some cutscenes different. This stat kind of detects which characters you feel more affection for, and changes some cutscenes depending on who you like more. One of the most notable ones is the "snowbike" scene before entering Macalania temple. The person you mount the snowbike with depends of the affection level.

Overdrives (all) and Special Abilities (all)

Now we jump to the 'Overdrives (all)' and 'Special Abilities (all)' sections. Here you can check and uncheck all the available overdrives, not for the character selected, but to the corresponding character. It doesn't matter if you have selected 'Tidus', if you check 'Tornado', that means Auron will be able to use that overdrive. Here are included aeons' overdrives. The same happens with the special Abilities.

4.2.- Equipment

Here we can edit our Equipment inventory. First, you select the desired slot (you can copy and paste weapons to have duplicates or transform a weapon into another) and then you can edit it.
You can change Names, models (making Yuna have a "masamune", for example), etc.

The copy and paste functions can be used to copy and paste the current slot. This function ignores which character the current slot is equipped to. The keyboard shortcut for Paste is Alt+V.

WARNING: Under the "Appearance" field, there are some extra options, including FFVII Cloud's Buster Sword and Sephiroth's Samurai Sword. These can crash the game when used with normal attacks. You can avoid this by using Skills and Overdrives instead of normal attacks. The Jecht Sword only works if equipped as armor. Changing Weapon and armor models to weird things is really fun, but always keep in mind they could crash the game.

Most of it is self explanatory, so I'll explain the Damage Formulas.
Equipment editing
==Create any type of weapon or armor that you want, including new weapons such as Buster Sword, Samurai Sword, and Rusty Sword
==Copy and Paste equipment between slots and save files
==Equip anything to anyone
==Note: Equipment slots not in use will have an asterisk in the equipment selector drop-down menu
==Put any auto-abilities on any equipment
==Edit weapon damage formula, attack power, and critical hit chance
Damage formulas:
-Normal: Damage is calculated using the standard physical formula
-Ignore Defense: Standard physical formula, ignores Defense
-Celestial High HP: Tidus, Kimahri, Wakka, and Rikku's celestial weapon formula
-Celestial High MP: Yuna and Lulu's celestial weapon formula
-Celestial Low HP: Auron's celestial weapon formula
-Target Current HP: Damage = (Target Current HP) * (Weapon Attack) / 16, Gravity type damage (proportional to Enemy's health)
-Target Max HP: Damage = (Target Max HP) * (Weapon Attack) / 16, Poison type damage (Proportional to Enemy's Max Health
-Target Current MP: Damage = (Target Current MP) * (Weapon Attack) / 16
-Target Max MP: Damage = (Target Max MP) * (Weapon Attack) / 16
-Magic Formula: Damage is calculated using Magic formula (like you attacked using a spell)
-Ignore Magic Defense: Damage is calculated using Magic formula and ignores Defense
-Special Magic: Damage is calculated using the special magic formula (uses the physical formula calculations, but off of the Magic stat and ignores Defense)
-Healing Formula: Damage is calculated using healing formula, doesn't heal
-User Max HP: Damage = (Weapon Attack) * (Wielder Max HP) / 10
-Multiple of 50: Damage = (Weapon Attack) * 50
-Multiple of 9999: Damage = (Weapon Attack) * 9999
-Target Enemies Killed: Damage = (Target Enemies Killed) * (Weapon Attack), only works against characters
-Target Tick Speed: Damage = (Target Tick Speed) * (Weapon Attack) * (3/16)
-Target Tick Counter: Damage = (Target Tick Counter) * (Weapon Attack) / 16
-No Damage: 0 damage

The 'Critical hit' field affects the critical hit formula (more info HERE[finalfantasy.wikia.com]). It's 3% by default for most in-game weapons, but you can change that now ;)
The Auto Abilities, names, appearances and all those things are interesting, because, for example, you can make a weapon for wakka with a skin of a kimhari's shield, with Auto-Abilities usually only obtainable by armor pieces (or Aeon immunities, or weapon Abilities, or any combination), and make Rikku equip it. You can even give them crazy skins like the Huge Jecht's sword, or FFVII cloud's Buster sword.

4.3.- Item

This part is really obvious. The first thing you must do is select wich Slot you want to edit. Then you select what kind of object is in that slot, and the amount in it. Remember to press "Apply" once you have done this before changing to other slot, or changes won't be saved.
The Get 99 of Every Item button is a shortcut to fill your inventory with every item available in the game and setting the quantity to 99 in all of them.

Key Items

This is pretty straightforward too, you just select what key Items you want to have. This is usefull if you want to have all Al Bhed Primers

This sectionhas a weird consequence (but not important), since you can have both the Cloudy Mirror and the Celestial Mirror at the same time.

How to get any enemy attack

You can edit your inventory slots to have any enemy attack. All the attacks are right below the "winning formula" in the list. Here, you can do any overdrive for free with anyone, you can do any monster attack too.
Some attacks crash the game because they expect the model to have certain animation, but you can try anything =)

If you combine this with giving an aeon (in the Character section of the guide) the Ability "Item" (which lets them use items (duh)), you can make weird things like making an aeon summon another aeon.

4.4.- Sphere Grid

Ok first of all, you won't be able to edit the Sphere grid visually, you just can edit all the nodes one by one looking into it's number. Yeah, I know, this sucks, but it's the only way. However, there is some good news.
You can see the Sphere grid node's numbers layouts here:

The Original Sphere Grid was the US version of the game, while the Standard one is the Basic Sphere grid in the PAL and HD versions of the game. There is just a little difference: The Standard Sphere grid added the nodes 840 to 844 (south-west of the center of the grid, between Kimhari and Rikku's zones).

Modify

This section is what you need if you want to change the sphere grid type you have in your save game. You can select which Sphere grid you are using. But warning: this doesn't change the content of the nodes, this only changes the layout, so if you want to keep everything you have unlocked go to the IMPORT section of this guide. Also this lets Maximize or minimize the stat nodes in the sphere grid. This looks for the stat nodes and changes them, the +3 stats can be maximized to +4, and the +200HP can be maximized to +300HP. It maximizes the whole Sphere grid, filling every empty node with a maxed stat node.
This also gives you the chance of randomize the sphere grid by Scrambling the Stat Nodes and/or the Ability Nodes.

NOTE: The "Max Sphere Grid" button apparently leaves some nodes untouched. Credit to Big Fat Chim for pointing this out. Since then I found more unaltered nodes, I'll list the ones I found below.

Sphere Grid Contents

This is simple, you select the node you want to edit, you can set what Type of node it is (including Ability nodes) and you can check which characters have them unlocked in the Activation field.

Sphere Grid Positions

Plain and simple: you can place your characters wherever you want in the sphere grid.

The rest of the fields are self-explanatory. I think you can find out what they do by yourself ;)

4.5- Blitzball

First of all, any changes made before the Luca Goers match in the Story won't have any effect. Even if you change all of this at the begining of the match, it will come back to its original state, so don't bother to change anything previous to that point (however, maybe you can edit an autosave after the point where it restarts the blitzball stats, I don't know if there is any viable autosave point, everything I said was true for the PS2 version of the game, where autosave didn't exist)

Ok this is huge, so let's go field by field:

Tournament

Here you can edit the status of the tournament. You can edit the prices and places of every team in the tournament. Explore by yourself.

League

Exactly the same with the league, you can edit the League Status and the prizes.

Team

Here you can edit the members of every team, the size of each team, and the statistics of League Games won or lost. Keep in mind that doing funny things, like having a smaller Team Size than the amount of people in the Team, could cause glitches. It's fun to play with these things, but always make backups. Sometimes this funny things block the game and force you to close the game.

Single Player

This lets you edit every player Statistics and Techniques. Keep in mind that the Blitzball minigame has an auto-level. After each match, depending on your team's level, all the other teams are recalculated, so changes made to the lvl and techniques of players that are not in your team will only last until you play a blitzball game. After that match, they will all be recalculated, and if your team is OP, they will be OP too. Funny things happen also if you equip them with Techniques that they don't have unlocked or they don't have capacity for.

4.6- Minigame

At this point you already know how the FFXED works, so most of this is really obvious about what it does, so I'll leave that to you.
The only thing worth mentioning here is that if you missed Besaid's or Zanarkand's Cloister Chests the first time, you would have to fight Dark Valefor or Dark Bahamut to get them, so you could use the 'Anima Sidequest' field to signal that you got those chests (you won't receive what's inside them, but at least you will be able to get Anima without fighting Dark Aeons first)

4.7.- Misc

Ok here is some generic stuff first:

• Save Slot Number: This is unused in the HD version of the game. This was only used in the PS2 version where the slot was not indicated
  by the file name, so ignore this.
  
• Gil: The amount of Gil that you have
  
• Game Time (seconds): If you want, you can
  edit the amount of time of the save.
  
• Battles Fought: Self explanatory
  
• Gil Donated to O'aka: more info on how this affects the game HERE[finalfantasy.wikia.com]
  
• Tidus Overdrive Count: Self-explanatory. Variable used to unlock Tidus' overdrives
  
• Yojimbo Compatibility and Yojimbo Compatibility Mode: More info on this HERE[www.gamefaqs.com] (Remember, the HD version is a port of the Int/PAL version, not US/JPN)

• Overworld Character (Luca): For some reason you can change your character in Luca, but not anywhere else.
  
• Rikku Wearing Wetsuit: You can change Rikku's skin to it's standard skin or the wetsuit skin. In the HD release the Wetsuit is rubbish compared to her default model, but maybe you like her more in that bondage wetsuit ;P
  
• Wantz in Macalania forest: at the end of the game, if you didn't interact with wantz in Mt. Gagazet, he won't be available at Macalania forest (he sells armor and weapons with 4 empty Ability slots). This checkbox represents that availability to find him there at the end.
  
• Gatta Dies: As you know, either Luzzu or Gatta will die. This lets you select which one is dead and which one is alive
  
• Riding Chocobo on Mi'ihen Highroad: after you defeat the Chocobo eater, you are able to ride a chocobo on Mi'ihen Highroad. That's what this checkbox is for (if it's activated, you can ride chocobos)

There are more buttons that are self-explanatory, except two of them:

• Fix Dark Valefor Glitch: Back in the day a glitch could happen to you that when you faced Dark Valefor, the game could freeze. This fixed it. I don't know if the developers fixed this glitch in the HD release, but pressing this button will do no harm.
  
• Enable New Game +: This changes the game coordinates to the beginning of the game, but I don't recommend you using this option because this only does that: it doesn't restart a lot of stats that it should, like opened chests will still be opened or stuff like that. My recommendation for a new game + is in the 'Some interesting ideas to replay the game section of the guide

Optional Bosses

This is a list of bosses that indicates if you already beat them or not (or if they are available). You can use this to fight this bosses more than once, or to deactivate Dark Valefor or Dark Bahamut temporarily to get the Besaid's or Zanarkand's cloister of trials chests.

Game Coordinates

This is the mostinteresting part. Each place in FFX has a Room number, and most of them have more than 1 spawn point (typically, entrances and save points).
You can also set the Storyline Progress to establish at which point in the main storyline you are.

There is an incomplete list of places and moments HERE[forums.pcsx2.net], but you can experiment by opening any savefile to see what values correspond to what.

Interesting places:
Debug Room - intended for developers to try features and such (It crashes my game, it may not work properly in the HD version, but it could be a problem of my PC. If you can make it work, please tell me)

4.8.- Import

Here you can "copy" some parts from another save to your current save. The first thing you want to do is click on 'Browse' and select the file from which you want data imported (obviously that other save must have gone through the process in the Opening the save files with FFXED section of the guide).


Once you have loaded you will be able to press the buttons. The buttons are very descriptive, but just in case, you can see in the image at the end of the post what parts are being Imported (like a copy/paste automatic function):

WARNING

This option only imports the stats of the players, it doesn't change the teams, Tournament and league.

Game Coordinates

Import Entire Save

As it's name describes, it just makes a copy of the imported save file. This is just a file copy, this means that it changes everything, including what FFXED doesn't normally change (like the Preferences, or some other minor stuff).

Once you pressed the desired buttons, press Edit or Done and save in the main menu.

Perfect Stats Sphere Grid: Appropriate for Leveling

Here I'll put some ideas I had to make new games interesting. If you have more ideas or saves (not obvious things like 'OP save', but things that will make you see the game from another perspective) send them to me and I'll add them to the guide.

For most of this ideas, since it's a Replay section, you'll need one of these, depending on the soundtrack you want to have from the start:

New game+ (improved)

In the Misc menu there is a button that sets your "game coordinates" to the Beginning of the game, but you keep your stats, your weapons, items, etc.
That is the perfect kind of New Game+ if you haven't completed everything in your game yet.
For example, if you haven't completed the monster arena, you could play the main story again from the beggining to travell through the whole world again capturing the monsters you're lacking.

But if you already discovered everything there is to see, it's has it's downsides:
-All the treasures that you already opened will stay opened (Including cloister of trials)
-All the minigames will stay at their current states, so if you already beated the whole game, there will be no point at replaying them.
-The monster arena will stay at it's current state, with everything unlocked, so no new monsters to capture/discover.

So if you want a New Game+ to beat the game AGAIN (and not just replay the main story), this is the method you can use:

Open a New Game file one of the two I posted before) with FFXED, go to the Import menu, Browse the file you want your New Game+ to be based on, and click on every button EXCEPT for Import Game Coordinates and Import entire save. DON'T click on those buttons. Then go to the Character menu and in the Activate field, set all the aeons to enabled. Save your file, and rename it to be in whatever slot you want.

Custom Roles

You could use the Sphere Grid and Character editors to make personalized character roles (However Yuna will always be summoner and Kimahri will always have Ronso Rage). There are two ways of doing this:
-Easy way: Replace the starting positions and starting Abilities of your characters. In this quick example[t.co], Auron is the Paladin, Lulu is the tank (Auron), Tidus is the white mage, Yuna is the blue mage (Kimahri), Kimahri is the thief, Rikku is the agile one (Wakka) and Wakka is the Black mage. (I did this quickly, but the tutorial battles could be problematic if the corresponding characters can't do what they are supposed to do (Lulu-Thunder, Wakka-Dark attack, Kimahri-Lance, Rikku-Steal. If they give any trouble, you should give them temporarily the Abilities for those battles and remove them afterwards. Or you could start your game Right After Kimahri's tutorial, modifying this save file).
Remember to also change the Base stats accordingly. You could change also the Poison Damage, making some weaker to poison and some others more resistant.

-Or you could: edit the whole sphere grid. To do that I don't recommend using FFXED, I recommend to give you 99 of every sphere and 99 S.lvl, cleaning up the sphere grid with FFXED, and Modifying the shpere grid in-game, and then import the custom sphere grid into a New Game file. That's tiring, but could be really interesting.

Custom difficulty (i.e. Super-hard mode)

You can download this New game SUPERHARD mode[t.co] Save that I made, but you can make your own.

Things that will make your game harder:
-Start the game with a high S.lvl for all characters (base S.lvl+25, I gave 4 "spendable" S.lvl as a gift so it's not a complete hell to level your characters)
-Poison drains 50% of your total HP (Instead of usual 25%)
-Poor Base stats (65% of their original value)
-Longer overdrive bars (115% of what they used to be)
-No Escape command (nor shield nor boost for aeons)
-Sphere grid's stat nodes minimized values (all are +1 or +200HP +10MP)

If this is too much, you can edit it. If it isn't enough, you can edit it too. You choose your own Difficulty level.

Random roles

This is, in my opinion, the best one of all. All you have to do is get one of the New Game saves I gave you earlier, and edit their Sphere grid. Press 'Scramble Stat Nodes' and 'Scramble Ability Nodes'. Now All your characters have the same path in the Sphere grid, but their stats and Abilities evolution will be different each time! Each time you play the game will be different. (Be careful of the tutorial fights, Lulu needs to have Thunder, Wakka needs to have Blind Attack, and Kimahri needs to have Lancet.

A way to get around this is again to use a/the save that is right after the last tutorial fight (Kimahri's fight tutorial at Kilika forest).

Another way to get around this is to give them temporarily this Abilities, being honest with yourself, and not using them unless a tutorial fight forces you to, and once you've past the kimahri's tutorial, edit your characters Abilities (and Sphere grids, remember, to remove an Ability you must remove them from both the Sphere grid and the Ability section in the Character section.

Well, I figured out the checksum for both X and X-2. This might just be the motivation I need to make the Save Editor getting rid of the need to have 2 or 3 different programs. No conversion necessary. Meanwhile. I'll probably just update the Chunk Deleter and incorporate the checksum fix in it.

It's not really optimal to create temp files and leave them open as some things could happen in the process and could cause file corruption (provided that the user forgot to create a backup). It's usually best to open/close the reader and writer.

Haven't you read the guide? you can set the tournament to be on the 3rd round, so you only play the final, and giving yourself an OP team so you completely obliterate the other team. After that match all the other teams will autolevel, but the first match you play after editing your team won't have the adversaries auto-leveled.

Anyways, why do you want to cheat to get the achievements? do you know what's the ppoint of an achievement?

I made a FFX guide as well -- showcasing the another way to use FFXED without the need of using HxD (by using a program I made to automatically delete the junk data for the user) or the PS2 Template. Once I get back near my PC, I'll link yours as well in case anyone wants to use a Hex editor to manually search and delte the junk data; as a show of gratitude as well.

Its easy to edit the league stats but tournament it's not that easy.
