How to Acquire Swag

An in-depth, relatively spoiler-free guide explaining the best places to find items in Undertale [NOTE: Work in progress. Currently only covers the RUINs.]

The Ruins

Welcome to the fabulous world of Undertale! Whether this is your first playthrough or one of many, this guide will teach you the best places to find items throughout the game.

Starting Off

Firstly, when you start the game, you will find yourself in the RUINS. From the Flowey boss fight to the unnecessarily long corridor, there is not much to be had in terms of items. However, you do start the game off with two items equipped: the Bandage and the Stick.

The Bandage is your first piece of 'armor' in the game, providing an absolutely stunning defense power of 0. Admittedly, this will not do much for you mid-battle, however if you choose to replace the Bandage with a more powerful defense piece later on, the Bandage will be movd to your inventory where it can be used as a consumable, healing 10 HP.

The Stick item is your first 'weapon', however this, similar to the bandage, only applies an attack power of 0. If you choose to replace the stick with a more powerful weapon later on, the stick will also be moved into your inventory where it can come in handy in a later boss fight (You may use this when fighting the Greater Dog).

Monster Candy

After you traverse the unnecessarily long corridor (you will know what this is when you play the game), there will be a room to your immediate north. In this room, you will find a bowl of Monster Candy. Despite the sign sayng to "take one", you may take up to three pieces before the candy spills onto the floor. Monster Candy is a consumable item, healing 10 HP each and is good for tiding you through in between early save points.

Spider Bake Sale

A while later, after your first boss fight with Napstablook, there will be an intersection of paths. Enter the room on your right and you will find the Spider Bake Sale. Here, you may purchase two consumable items to heal your HP.

Spider Donuts, the lesser of the two spider items, sell for 7G and heal 12 HP. Spider Cider is a more effective, yet more expensive item at 18G and healing 24 HP. This seems like a fair price gap, but considering your HP can only reach a maximum of 20 at LV 1, the few minutes of griding required to rack up this much cash in the RUINS is most likely unnecessary for the time being.

It should be noted that consuming a spider item at a later boss fight (Muffet's fight) will end the fight early and therefore, saving one is usually worth the effort.

Your First Equipment

Shortly after passing the Spider Bake Sale you will encounter a room with several holes in it, one of them containing a switch you will need to flip. Upon falling down the bottom-left hole, you will find a Faded Ribbon lying on the ground. This is the first helpful piece of armor you will find with a stat of 3 DF. This, along with other armor and weapons, can be equipped through the ITEMS menu (Press CTRL).
After completing the room with the switch and changing your perspective a little, you will encounter another intersection. On your right you will find a room with a Froggit inside. Once you enter the door beside Froggit, you will be provided with a view of what is believed to be the remains of what the monsters once called "HOME". On your right you will find an item called the Toy Knife. This item is your first weapon with a stat of 3 AT. This can be equipped over the Stick, returning the Sitck to your inventory.


After this point, you will have found all the items currently available in the RUINS and may proceed Northwards to your next save point.
