Description
This mod is meant to be a alternate history of Rome. It asks the questions of what if Rome changed back into a republic, what if Rome wasn't destroyed, and what if Rome was able to survive until 1444. Mods that change the look of the map in the pictures are not included. Feel free to give a suggestion to make this mod better, and to rate this on whether you enjoyed it or not.

About Rome:
Founded sometime between 337-476 via coup d'état and with support from the Pope, a new republic, similar to the one before the Conflict of the Orders, was created. The purpose of which was to elect the most capable person for bringing the country back from the clutches of death, which was getting closer day by day. While it isn’t certain who or exactly how it was wrought, the coup was certainly caused by the unstable and chaotic monarchy that made Rome fall so far from its glory. It was successful before any barbarians had taken hold of the Roma and so the first order of the new Roman Republic was to secure their position in the Italian region. Abandoning any hopes of having real control over Francia and after hard fought battles the Republic was able to secure its home region and parts of Northern Africa. By the time the Romans get to the start of the game the government is rather stable, and are no longer under immediate threat of destruction. However, with the long period of stagnation and the recent loss of Northern Africa, elements are starting to pine for the earlier days before the monarchy fell. Though Byzantium stayed a monarchy, they fully supported the new Roman Republic. Viewing that it’s structure didn’t inherently conflict with the empire at large, or at least them.

Government:
The Roman Republic has a Consul with three year terms. An individual may only be Consul for two terms and has less sweeping powers then previous eras. While still powerful in their own right, most of the political power is vested in the senate, which regained actual power over the state in the Coup. Primarily made up of the Patrician, Plebeians can still hold office. However, a Senator is no longer a life long position and doesn’t come with a wealth requirement. Instead it is now an elected office that is dominated by political families that are typically supported by the Curia/Pope and still hold enough wealth to strongly influence the elections in their favor. The Curia/Pope has become an important and influential figure within Roman politics, as they play a critical role in the security of Rome from other Catholic nations during this time.

With this government comes its own special government mechanics and parliament. Giving unique issues and abilities. A visual preview of their effects and modifiers is available above. Only the Roman Parliament issues require DLC. The Roman Republic government mechanics do not require any.

Culture:
The Roman culture has been moved to the Latin culture group and Byzantine and Greek are apart of the Hellenic culture group. The Greek culture group name was renamed to Hellenic. Byzantium accepts the Roman culture and Rome accepts the Byzantine culture.

Papal States:
The Papal States are a special subject type under Rome. This allows the Papacy to work as intended, while also continuing to make them effectively within Roman territory. Along with giving Rome a new government mechanic and allow for a unique disaster that wouldn't otherwise be possible.

Kingdom of Germany:
Known as the Holy Roman Empire in our timeline, the Kingdom of Germany is what central Europe would’ve been had Rome not fallen. The only reason the region rebranded itself to the HRE was because of spat with the Pope sometime after acquiring the title of King/Emperor of the Romans for defending the Pope against a Rebellion that threatened the Papal States. So with that, the Kingdom of Germany simply continues to exist as they did. Just without the ability to legitimize themselves as the Roman Empire or Holy. Along with the lack of northern Italian lands since they didn’t defend the Pope from said rebellion in this timeline, and therefore didn't acquire that land. Note, since there isn’t a way to know exactly how Central Europe would’ve developed other than the reduced decentralization of Royal Power and fragmentation, I took the liberty of re-adding some missing duchies related to the Stem Duchies of the earlier KoG and changed the starting King from Austria to Bavaria. We are assuming Charlemagne still had an empire, but may or may not have been crowned an Emperor by the Pope. In either case, the conditions for East Francia/KoG are still in place. For some resources related to KoG, look under Other Information. If you happen to spot locals that still aren’t converted over, please notify me on the discord with a visual aid or description of the event/text.

Decisions, Diplomatic Actions, Parliament Issues:
There are unique decisions and parliament issues for Rome and Byzantium. Along with the Propose Integration and Exchange Legal Territory dip actions for Roman-Byzantine relations.

National Relations:
Poland has a personal union with the Kingdom of Hungry since Władysław III of Poland doesn't die in a war against the Ottomans.

Thanks to Jan for letting us use his Roman Empire with Unit Pack Models mod. It's not integrated naturally because it would cause the units to disappear if you didn't have the require DLC's for it, and I didn't want to have them required to play the base mod, so it's a separate mod you can subscribe to here. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=975263064&result=1

Not at this time, though I probably should consider allowing some way to do so.

There's a fight with the Pope and you get a different branch for that section of the mission tree. The goal being to support the Reformation and back their side in the League. There's also a mission tree for becoming Orthodox where you can theoretically 'heal' the schism like the Byzantines.

Hey, love the mod so far. Was wondering what happens if you go protestant and go down the "fate of the vatican" part of the mission tree?
