How to start a new save in MGS5 while keeping your old save.

Overview

I keep seeing that people don't know how to backup their saves and restart the game. So here's a quick little guide. I've done this successfully and have been able to switch between my save files as often as I like.

First thing to do is to turn off steam cloud for MGS5. Otherwise none of the following steps will work. To do this go to your steam library, right click on MGS5, go to properties, click on the updates tab, and uncheck the "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN" box.

Second thing you need to do is backup your save file. Go to steam/userdata/"userID"/311340/remote "userID" will show up as a string of numbers which is your steam user ID. Copy TPP_GAME_DATA and put it in a backup folder.

Thirdly delete the TPP_GAME_DATA file from the 311340 folder after you have your backup. Then run the game and it should take you to the opening scene in the hospital.

If you want to play on your old save just swap out the TPP_GAME_DATA files. Make sure you remember which is which though! I'd recommend keeping the saves in different folders or renaming them to something different.

Note that I haven't tried going online and managing FOBs and whatnot while on the new save, I'm not sure if this will mess with the online files so I'd recommend not trying it. For anyone who does try this let me know what happens. However I know for a fact that online works just fine when you put back your original save.

i must be stupidbut i did this and the game didn't go back to the hospital scene it just said my save data waas corrupted and it was gonna continue from the last save what did i do wrong?

You saved me. Thank you so much!! I tried getting Mgo to work. So i thought, what if Mgo would start immediately after starting the game. Changed settings... After that it simply closed the game right after accessing the server. So now i couldnt even play single player. And i couldnt reach the settings to change it back. I searched for hours to reset the game and what not. And here i am with your splendid solution. You are true Hero for me!

Going online after doing this WILL work, but it will overwrite your previous SCOUT with the new protagonist you made in the new game, regardless of what class you chose for them to be. You WILL keep your levels, though, (At least, I did) and it doesn't overwrite any other classes you have, unless you purposefully delete them and create new ones. If you delete the other classes, you won't keep your saves. Just a heads-up, in case you thought you could change the person but keep their levels. If you delete the ENFORCER and INFILTRATOR class, their levels will be lost permeanently. However, a strange thing to note is that when I deleted both the INFILTRATOR class and ENFORCER class, and used the second slot to make the INFILTRATOR, it made it ENFORCER. Perhaps the game got confused?

OR you can just make a new steam account then share mgs with it. This can be annoying switching accounts but at least there is no chance at a problem happening.

Oh and if it doesn't work try to restart the steam cloud by desactivating it and reactivating it and by Driver i meant Hard Disk.
