Armenia
Armenia has rather weak melee infantry but strong skirmishers and even stronger Cavalry.

Armenia - Melee Infantry

Hillmen - 220 Denars

For the price this is a pretty good unit. These guys have javelins which makes them useful for screening away Horseman, but they dont like getting charged by Cavalry. They have pretty low armour value, which makes them very prone to missle fire. I recommend you use them as meatshilds to blunt the charges of the enemies high charge units (e.g. babarian infantry).

Axemen - 640 Denars

Dont use these guys in Multiplayer; Kartli Axemen are much much better for 120 denars extra

Kartli Axemen - 760 Denars

This unit should be your main line infantry. It looses to most swordsmen at its price range, but its the best melee infantry Armenia has. Always turn Formation attack off, charge the enemy, activate shild wall and give another attack order to avoid the shild wall bug (units facing the wrong way).

Armenia - Spear Infantry

Eastern Spearmen - 180 Denars

The weakest Spear Unit in the game. Their biggest problem is that they dont have javelins, so Cavalry can charge them without taking any damage. Due to their low price you might consider using them as meat-shilds, but that is a bad idea. They will die so fast you probaly wont have a chance to send in your Kartli Axemen without them getting charged. Eastern Spearmen are decent at supporting cav fights that already started but thats about it.

Persian Hoplites - 440 Denars

A decent hoplite unit for the price. They are good against cav but cant do much against non-spear infantry. They are a good unit for the flanks but are to squishy to hold the main line.

Noble Spearmen - 850 Denars

Dont bring them. Like almost all Elite Spearmen its pretty much impossible to make them cost effective since they will still get crushed by sword infantry. Use Persian Hoplites to support cav fights instead.

Armenia - Missile Infantry

Eastern Archers - 350 Denars

A good unit for the price but I would recommend you use eastern slingers for Multiplayer since they have shilds.

Eastern Javelinmen - 370 Denars

I dont think there is another Javelin unit with 41 missile damage in this price range but they have virtually no armor. Good for screening away Horsemen. Rarely used since Armenia usally has the Cavalry advantage.

Eastern Slingers - 380 Denars

Very cost efficient unit that is great for dealing with enemy skirmishers. I recommend you bring them as your main skirmish component.

Elite Persian Archers - 530 Denars

Elite Persian Archers arent much better than the normal Eastern Archers but way more expensive. Yes the have the 2-handed spear in melee (30 bonus vs Cav) but since they are very light missile infantry they wont survive a Cavalry charge anyway.

Armenia - Shock Cavalry

Persian Cavalry - 760 Denars

Good alternative to the more expensive Cataphracts. Their charge is devastating and have - unlike Cataphracts - a pretty good turning speed.

Eastern Cataphracts - 1060 Denars

Arguably the best shock Cavalry for the price. They have the same charge bonus as the Persian Cavalry but these guys are considered "Super Heavy" and not just "Very Heavy" which makes a pretty big diffrence.

Royal Cataphracts - 1450 Denars

They strongest Cavalry in the game which is slighty better than their eastern counterpart for a much higher price. The only Royal Cataphract you should bring should be your General.

Armenia - Melee Cavalry

Noble Blood Cavalry - 750 Denars

If you want to bring melee cav instead if shock cav (I would advise against that) you should bring Noble Blood Cav. They have a 15 bonus vs large and their weight class is "Heavy"

Mercenary Cappadocian Cavalry - 820 Denars

When you are going with Melee Cav and have some money left, replace some of your Noble Bloods with Mercenary Cappadocian Cavalry.

Azat Knights - 1300 Denars

NEVER bring these guys. They are just way to expensive for what they deliver. You are much better off with Eastern Cataphracts.

Armenia - Missile Cavalry

Horse Skirmishers - 390 Denars

Good for dealing with elephants when you know your opponent wont / cant bring any horse archers. You are better off with Horse Archers though.

Horse Archers - 400 Denars

Your basic Horse Archer Unit. Very vulnerable to missile fire but great if you can get them to late game.

Armoured Horse Archers - 640 Denars

When you expect your enemy will bring Horse Archers too you should replace your basic Horse Archers with these guys. They are still susceptible to missile fire but trade fire very well with normal Horse Archers. Keep in mind that these guys are Medium Missile Cav and can get cought by light melee cav.

Noble Horse Archers - 880 Denars

These very heavy elite Horse Archers have 90 (!!) armor and no trouble dealing with other Horse Archers. Like the other Horse Archers in Armenias roster they only have 35 missile damage and 15 ammo. Due to their mass Noble Horse Archers are capable of making devastating rear charges once they have expended all of their ammunition. Dont use them in melee against Melee or Shock Cav since dont get a bonus vs large. Due to their price I would stick with the Basic Horse Archer or to the Armoured variant.

Arverni
Oathsworn baby!

Arverni - Melee Infatry

Celtic Warriors - 350 Denars

Great for dealing with enemy meatshilds (e.g. Hastati). Good as meatshields & on the flanks.

Naked Warriors - 580 Denars

Glasscannons that are great for rear charges. Cant stand up to Missile fire or Cav charges. I wouldnt bring them since Arverni has other good melee infantry without these weaknesses.

Chosen Swords - 720 Denars

Your main line infantry. Decent melee infantry with somewhat low moral.

Oathsworn - 1340 Denars

The strongest infatry unit in the game. Has good melee attack, great weapon damage, good armor and a great charge bonus. Dont let the enemy rob you of your charge ( e.g. Meatshilds , cav yolo ... ) and you will punch a hole in your opponents line. Unless you are fighting a Cav heavy faction you should always bring 2-4 Oathsworn.

Arverni - Spear Infantry

Levy Freeman - 210 Denars

Great unit for the price! It doesnt have to deal much damage to pay for itself and is deadly when supporting cav fights. Also has 2 Javelin volleys which are great to keep cav out of your backlines. Cheap Spears for the win!!

Spear Warriors - 490 Denars

Usally its a better idea to stick with Levy Freeman since their cav killing capabilities are almost the same. Spear Warriors are heavier than Levy Freeman so they do slighty better when they get charged by cav. Cheapest spear unit in the Arverni roster with the "Cavalry Counter-Tactics" ability what makes them a good choice when fighting Cav based factions.

Chosen Spearmen/Spear Nobles - 680/1180 Denars

At this price range spears are rarley worth their price - cheaper spears are almost as good against cav. Since all spears get wrecked by swordsmen its doesnt make much sense to invest in the mid-tier/ elite ones unless you are fighting a horde faction.

Arverni - Missile Infantry

Celtic Slingers - 280 Denars

Decent low tier slinger. Best long range skirmisher the Arverni roster offers.

Celtic Youth/Celtic Skirmishers - 320/350 Denars

I dont like most javelin Skirmishers since almost every Infantry has javelins. Can be useful against Elephants & Chariots but i wouldnt bother.

Gallic Hunters - 450 Denars

The reason this unit is so expensive is not its damage dealing capability or its survivablity. Its expensive because of an useless trait called "Snipe" which allows the unit to remain hidden while firing. Sounds good but its mostly useless. Bring Celtic Slingers instead.

Arverni - Melee Cavalry

Light Horse - 450 Denars

Not a bad cav unit per se - but Heavy Horse is just too amazing for the price.

Heavy Horse - 700 Denars

Most cost efficient Cavalry Unit in the game. Heavy Horse has great stats and is considered Heavy (duuh?!) which makes its charges very damaging.

Noble Horse - 1300 Denars

Go with heavy horse instead.

Arverni - Special

Savage Dogs - 450 Denars

Fun unit that is almost impossible to make cost efficient.
Athens
An average faction with no real strengths.

Athens - Melee Infantry

Mercenary Thracian Warriors - 500 Denars

More expensive than the regular Thracian Warriors. Decent shock infantry with a 20 bonus vs Cav.
For this price I cant recommend bringing them.

Thorax Swords - 710 Denars

Weak Swordsmen for the price. Unless you need the javelins ( do deal with elephants and chariots) use Thorax Hoplites instead.

Athens - Spear Infantry

Millitia Hoplites - 300 Denars

Good unit to support cav fights on the flank. Can hold out suprisingly long.

Light Hoplites - 440 Denars

Made obsolete by Militia Hoplites

Thureos Spears - 560 Denars

Useless in Melee against everything but engaged Cavalry. Has many Javelins to throw which is the only way to deal damage with these guys - but its damn efficient. Can hold out for quiete some time in Square formation (wont deal much damage though). Best used for screening away Missile Cav. Use them when facing a Missile cav heavy faction.

Thureos Hoplites / Hoplites - 600 / 650 Denars

Made obsolete by Thorax Hoplites

Thorax Hoplites - 710 Denars

A pretty cheap Hoplite with the 30 damage elite spear. Turn formation attack off, charge the enemy, use hoplite wall when attacking. When you do that Thorax Hoplites beat Thorax Swords which is why these guys should be your main line infantry. Good unit to put your General in.

Picked Hoplites - 1200 Denars

Their stats dont justify their price. Not significantly better than thorax hoplites. Dont use this unit!

Athens - Pikes

Pikemen - 600 Denars

In my 300+ online games i have never lost against a pike army. Pikes are pretty much worthless in MP. Dont even bother!

Athens - Missile Infantry

Javelinmen - 220 Denars

I wouldnt bother - if you want to deal with Elephants or Chariots replace some/all Thorax Hoplites with Thorax Swords.

Archers - 250 Denars

Unless you bring 8 of them (dont do that) they are useless against other skirmishers since they only have 125 range ( = wont get first volley off) and pretty much no armor ( will die almost instantly). Good when you can get them to late game but that is not likely to happen. Dont bother bringing them.

Slingers - 270 Denars

Not great but decent enough. If you want to go light on skirmishers these guys are a good choice.

Peltasts/Light Peltasts - 420/460 Denars

Just a tougher version of the regular javelinmen. Almost useless in melee. If you want javelins bring Thorax Swords instead of Thorax Hoplites.

Mercenary Thracian Peltasts - 480 Denars

This Peltast Unit is actually pretty good with its 41 damage elite javelins and decent melee capabilties. Due to its low armor its doesnt do well in head on engagements and is susceptible to missile fire.

Mercenary Baeleric Slingers - 590 Denars

A decent elite slinger unit with the quick reload ability. I prefer Cretan Archers when I go with elite skirmishers.

Mercenary Cretan Archers - 600 Denars

One of the strongest Archer units in the game. Sadly it only has the "Quick Reload" ability instead of "Precision Shot". Still definitly a worthwhile unit!

Athens - Shock Cavalry

Hippeus Lancers - 1080 Denars

Compared to shock cav from other factions Hippeus Lancers are to expensive for what they can deliver. But Athens doenst have much killing power aside from these guys. So it kinda makes sense to bring them when you dont fight a faction with exceptional cavalry. Decent choice for a Generals unit.

Athens - Melee Cavalry

Citizien Cavalry - 540 Denars

Maximus Decimus Meridius ( guy from youtube) doesnt call them ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Cav for no reason. The only enemies they can kill are skirmishers. But since these Horsemen are your only cheap Cavalry option you kinda have to bring them.

Athens - Missile Cavalry

Skirmisher Cavalry/Tarantine Cavalry - 340/560 Denars

Im not the biggest fan of Javelin cav but as I said they can be useful for dealing Elephants & Chariots. If you bring them I would go for the cheaper variant.
Boii
Arguably the stongest babarian faction. Some consider this faction to be even stronger than rome.

Boii - Melee Infantry

Celtic Warriors - 350 Denars

Great for dealing with enemy meatshilds. When you get a good charge with these guys they can even beat hastati. Killing the enemies meatshilds will help you to get a charge with your main line infantry. When fighting rome you must bring a few celtic warriors.

Axe Warriors - 470 Denars

A good unit for most factions but as Boii you have better options.

Naked Swords - 580 Denars

Good unit but as Boii you have better options.

Sword Follower- 760 Denars

This is your main line infantry and its a very good one. Even roman infantry struggels against these guys ( provided you get the charge ). Good charge bonus, decent melee attack, good melee defense, morale.

Oathsworn - 1340 Denars

Strongest infantry unit in the game. Great for punching a hole in the enemy line, giving you the opportunity to ouflank him. Your general should be in an Oathsworn unit. I recommend bringing 2-4 ( large funds battle).

Boii - Spear Infantry

Levy Freemen - 210 Denars

Unless you are fighting a cav heavy faction ( e.g. Parthia,Armenia,Horde faction ...) these guys are good enough for your anti cav needs. Since they are so cheap they can pay for themselfs with just 1 jav volley. Cant stand up to being charged by heavy cav but are AMAZING in supporting already started cav engagements.

Spear Warriors - 490 Denars

Replace levy freemen with this unit when facing a cav heavy faction. Due to their higher mass they can stand better stand up to being charged ( still not great). Furthermore they have the "Cavalry Counter Tactics" ability making them extremly deadly to cav. Cant stand up to sword / axe units though.

Veteran Spears - 760 Denars

Unless your facing a Horde faction dont bring these guys. Their cav killing capabilities aren't much better than those of the Spear Warriors. Due to their very heavy mass they can stand up to cav charges very well. Still get wrecked by sword / axe units.

Boii - Missile Infantry

Celtic Slingers - 280 Denars

When you want to bring skirmishers I would recommend this unit as your main skirmish component. Like most cheap slingers they dont deal a lot of damage but have a decent missle block chance what makes them good for killing enemy archers/ make them waste ammo.

Celtic Bowmen - 300 Denars

Very basic archer unit with nothing special about it. Has only 125 range meaning you wont get the first volley off. Will get wrecked in an skirmish shootout by pretty much every other skirmisher. I cant recommend this unit.

Celtic Skirmishers - 350 Denars

Really dont see a place for javelin infantry in a boii army. Every melee unit comes with 2 jav volleys which should be enough to fullfil your Elephant/chariot killing needs. Boii infantry and cav has enough killing power. Dont bring these guys.

Boii - Melee Cavalry

Light Horse - 450 Denars

Decent unit which is made obsolete by the much better Heavy Horse.

Heavy Horse - 700

One of the most cost-efficient units in the game. Good cav killing capabilities (only 10 bonus vs large though). However what makes this unit truly amazing is their heavy mass and good charge bonus. The Heavy Horse unit can deliver some really punishing rear charges for a relatively low price.

Noble Horse - 1300 Denars

Melee Cavalry in this price range is never worth bringing. Bring Heavy Horse instead.
Carthage
Above average faction with good main line & elite infantry, decent cavalry and skirmishers. Can field elephants to give them a (small) chance of beating a infantry heavy faction like rome, tylis or boii.

Carthage - Generals

General's Bodyguard - 460 Denars

Not a very strong unit but its low price make it a viable choice for your generals unit.

Carthage - Melee Infantry

Gallic Warriors - 350 Denars

Average unit for its price. Loses to its Celtic counterpart & to Hastati.

Iberian Swords - 350 Denars

Worse than the Gallic Warriors in melee but Iberian Swords have 5 javelins instead of 2. This makes them a good unit for your flank but bad meatshilds as they cant use their javelins in melee combat.

Mercenary Italian Swordmen - 400 Denars

Melee capabilty of this unit is on par with Gallic Warriors. Stand up better to missile fire than gallic fighters. Gallic Warriors make them somewhat obsolete.

Mercaenary Scutarii - 620 Denars

Fragil Libyan Infantry without shildwall. Made obsolete by Libyan Infantry.

Libyan Infantry - 720 Denars

Carthage's main line infantry. Better than most mid tier swords from the "civilized" factions. Defeat Thorax Swords, Parthian Swords, Pontic Swords and Sammnite Warriors. Nevertheless it gets annihilated by roman infantry. Dont forget to turn off formation attack & activate shildwall!

Sammnite Warriors - 760 Denars

Made obsolete by Libyan Infantry.

Mercenary Noble Fighters - 1380 Denars

Unless you plan on bringing elephants, you should bring one Noble Fighter. They lose against Oathsworn but are still a good unit. Better than most elite swords. You must not let the enemy rob you of your charge.

Carthage - Spear Infantry

Libyan Hoplite - 270 Denars

Good unit but made obsolete by Late Libyan Hoplite.

Late Libyan Hoplite - 300 Denars

Great anti-cav unit. Has a 30 Bonus vs Cav but the lack of javelins make it possible for your opponent to outmaneuver this unit & charge it without taking extrem damage. Medium mass makes it somewhat susceptible to heavy shock cav charges. Deadly when supporting already started cavalry engagements. When using "Hoplite Wall" it cant hold out a surprisely long time against sword infantry.

Carthagian Hoplite / Late Carthagian Hoplite - 620 / 650 Denars

Late Carthagian Hoplite has 5 more armour. Unless you are fighting a cav heavy faction ( Parthia, Armenia, Steppe faction) Late Libyan Hoplites are the better choice. Not a good main line infantry compared to Libyan Infantry.

Sacred Band - 1170 Denars

Cool looking but useless. Loses to the much cheaper "Mercenary Veteran Hoplite" ( 840 Denars). The lack of the 30 damage elite spear really hurts the Sacred Band. This "elite" Hoplite also lacks in other departsments though. Dont bring these guys.

Pike - Infantry

African Pikemen - 700 Denars

No. Just dont.

Carthage - Missile Infantry

Libyan Javelinmen / Peltast - 330 / 440 Denars

The javelins on your sword infantry should be sufficient. Libyan Peltast might be somewhat usefull against a Steppe faction when placed behind your Hoplites.

Baleric Slingers - 560 Denars

Decent elite Slingers but I would recommend to bring Mercenary Cretan Archers instead.

Mercenary Cretan Archer - 600 Denars

Very good elite Archer that sadly lacks the "precision shot" ability.

Carthage Shock Cavalry

Noble Cavalry - 1020 Denars

Comparable to Hippeus Lancers. I see no place for them in a Cartaginian army since they have better units to kill your opponents unit quickly.

Carthage - Melee Cavalry

Mercenary Light Horse - 450 Denars

If you lack the money to buy Carthaginian Cavalry, this unit is a cheap alternative. Very susceptible to missile fire and its low mass make its charges against infantry fairly ineffective.

Mercenary Iberian Cavalry - 500 Denars

The lack of a bonus vs large makes this unit useless.

Carthaginian Cavalry - 610 Denars

Decent mid-tier cavalry. Crushes citizien cav.

Scutarii Cavalry - 680 Denars

Made obsolete by Carthaginian Cavalry.

Mercenary Companian Cavalry - 1290 Denars

This unit is terrible. Melee Cav in this price range is useless anyway but this unit takes it to a whole new level. Its doesnt even have a bonus vs cav and very low armour piercing damage. Never ever bring this unit.

Carthage - Missile Cavalry

Mercenary Numidian Cavalry - 550 Denars

Very good missile damage but terrible in melee. Worse than most jav cav units. If you really want to bring jav cav ( You shouldnt) bring these guys.

Mercenary Numidian Noble Cavalry - 1290 Denars

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to expenive for what it can deliver. Dont bring this unit.

Carthage - Elephant

African Elephants / African War Elephants - 1400 / 1600 Denars

Keep them away from projectials and you can annihilate entire armies with elephants. Dont forget that most melee infantry units have 2 javelins each. African War Elephants are tougher and harder to run amok than their cheaper counterpart.
Cimmeria
Faction with the best archer unit.

Cimmeria - Melee Infantry

Young Axes - 190 Denars

The cheapest unit in the Cimmerian roster that deals more damage than one would think, considering the price. Morale is extremly low though, breaking almost immediately on contact with an enemy high charge unit. Having no javelins also hurts this unit but what can you expect for 190 denars. Decent ( considering the cost ) for rear charges.

Cimmera - Spear Infantry

Steppe Spearmen - 190 Denars

Sadly this unit lacks javelins which really hurts its ability to screen off cavalry efficiently. Very high bonus vs Large ( +30 ) makes it very cost efficient when supporting already started cavalry engagements. Low mass makes them susceptible to being charged unless in square formation.

Militia Hoplites - 300 Denars

Fairly tanky unit for the price with medium mass, making it much more charge resistent than the Steppe Spearmen. Like all Hoplites this units has no javelins, making it much harder to keep cavalry at bay. When attacking infantry turn off formation attack ( actually always do that ), charge, activate hoplite wall ( gives bonus vs infantry ) and click another attack order to avoid the hoplite wall bug ( unit turning back towards enemy).

Scythian Hoplites - 530 Denars

Basically a standart hoplite unit with noticable worse offensive stats while having almost the same defensive stats. For such a cheap unit they can hold the line surprisingly long, giving your superb archers much time to fire. Great unit when you have to pinch pennies to buy those expensive skirmishers.

Hoplites - 650 Denars

Moderately better offensive and slighty better defensive stats than the Scythian Hoplites for 120 Denars extra is usally not worth it in my experience. Your killing power doesnt come from your midtier infantry when playing Cimmeria. Spend those extra denars on some skirmishers or Cimmerian Noble Infantry.

Cimmerian Noble Infantry - 1090 Denars

Good elite Hoplite unit with the 30 damage elite spear. Only infantry unit in the Cimmerian roster that can actualy kill stuff. Since this unit has a rather low charge bonus you generally want to take advantage of their "Expert Charge Defense". Meaning you should stand still while the enemy unit charges you from the front ( Cimmerian Noble Infantry will recieve the charge bonus of the enemy unit then). Dont forget to deactivate formation attack!

Cimmeria - Missile Infantry

Javelinmen - 220 Denars

Very squishy unit with high damage short range projectiles. Since cimmerian spears dont have javelins you could combine a cheap spearmen with Javelinmen to keep enemy cavalry at bay.

Slingers - 270 Denars

Probably the weakest slinger unit in the game but still a slinger unit, meaning it has 150 range and a decent missle block chance. Good at trading shots with enemy skirmishers, but dont expect them to kill much or deal with elephants.

Steppe Archers - 330 Denars

Very good missile damage, good range but very squishy. If you go with a light skirmish component you can mix these guys with slingers and hope your opponent wastes his ammo on the slingers while your archers do the killing.

Cimmerian Heavy Archers - 600 Denars

Strongest archer unit in the game and probably the reason why you play with this faction. Good range and missile damage combined with precision shot can decimate enemy units even from the front. In melee these guys use a two handed spear which gives them a huge 30 bonus vs cavalry. Due to their somewhat low mass they take massive shock damage from cavalry though.

Picked Peltasts - 720 Denars

Strongest Javelin unit in the game but not strong enough to justify their cost. I would recommend you stick to Cimmerian Heavy Archers. If you still bring this unit try not to shoot in the front of units where their shield bonus applies. Steppe spears work fairly well together with Picked Peltasts when in Square formation : They enemy wraps around them, giving the Peltats and opportunity to shoot them in the unshielded flank or back. Once their ammunition is depleted ( happens quickly thanks to quick reload instead of precision shot) this unit is basically worthless since its melee stats are crap.

Cimmeria - Shock Cavalry

Steppe Lancers - 340 Denars

Cheapest shock cavalry in the game with zero survivability. Decent for yolo charging enemy infantry when immediately followed up by infantry. Rear charge damage is decent but lets be real you wont have the cavalry advantage with Cimmeria so that wont happen.

Cimmeria - Melee Cavalry

Citizen Cavalry - 540 Denars

Cheap melee cavalry that isnt even worth its low price. Only Cimmerian Cavalry unit with some melee survivability, so you probably have to bring them to counter enemy cavalry. Engage enemy cavalry only when you have spear support nearby. Strong enough to hunt down most skirmishers though.

Cimmeria - Missile Cavalry

Steppe Horse Archers - 360 Denars

High missile damage normal range horse skirmisher. Low armor make them a poor choice in a horse archer duel. Very quick due to low mass. Worthless in melee.

Armoured Horse Archers - 580 Denars

Same damage and range as Steppe Horse Archers but with the Precision shot ability. Be careful however as using it will exhaust your unit, making it considerably slower. Armour rating is still not great but decent melee stats and medium mass increase their usefulness when out of ammo compared to Steppe Horse Archers.

Noble Horse Archers - 790 Denars

Equal in terms of skirmish potential when compared to the Armoured Horse Archers while their heavier mass makes them easier to catch. Armour rating isnt much better ( only 40 while parthian noble horse archers have 90 ). Offensive melee stats on the other hand are great for a missle cavalry and their high mass makes their charge fairly effective.
