What is the Equalizer?
This is a question I hope nobody is asking, but just in case, the equalizer is a melee weapon for the soldier that carries a gimic that only it and the escape plan have. The lower your health goes, the better the special ability of the weapon becomes. In this case, the lower the health of the Soldier using it, the higher the damage output of the item is. It's dis-advantage being, the soldier heals 90% slower from medics and dispencers, but, this can be taken as an advantage, because since the soldier is healing slower, and medics build über faster on a damaged player, the soldier is basically helping the medic get über quickly. Now with these stats, one might think their is nothing wrong with the weapon, well, there is, and it's problem is that it's unique upside isn't justifiable. I'll explain in the next part.
What's wrong with the Equalizer?
The equalizer, on paper, sounds like an amazing weapon, a weapon that gives a massive damage increase if you have low health, and has you heal slower from medics while active. This is kind of the issue. Allow me to take you a time far far away, or, the Pyro-mania update. Originally, this weapon gave a speed increase AND a damage increase the lower your health got. But during this magical time known as the Pyro-mania update, the thing was nerfed down, and basically cut into two. We have the side that focuses on damage, the equalizer, and the side that focuses on speed, the escape plan. Problem with the equalizer is how outshined it is by the escape plan and the rest of his arsenal. Seeing as the equalizer does have its moments (despite that's all they are, moments), it's outclassed by every other weapon. This weapon has it so you purposly run into enemy fire with low health. By the time this thing deals damage that's worth a damn, one bullet is enough to destroy you. The Escape Plan, its counterpart, is a surperior weapon simply by how fast it makes you, allowing you to get out (and is it just me, or does the thing feel like it has an insane crit chance), or the disciplinary action, which makes you and a teammate faster, in exchange for some damage, but you also get the largest Melee range in the game, with the ability to hit people behind you if they're upclose. Compared to the rest of the Soldier's melee arsenal, the weapon feels horrible in comparison.
How to fix it?
Compared to it's original version, also known as the "Beta Split Equalizer", or when it was fully added to the game, the Equalizer isn't the same weapon. This can be called one of, if not the only time VALVe has removed a weapon in the game for new ones. This is because the Equalizer isn't the same. The best way to fix it would be to re-unite the equalizer and the escape plan, but keep it with the minicrits. That way, it punishes for going in like an idiot to kill people, but rewards for being fast thinking while trying to do so. It would give a new way of strategizing to the Soldier's way of gameplay. So far the most strategy a normal soldier has is rocket jump and blast everybody while in the air. This weapon has what it needs to be a good one, but the creation of the Escape Plan and weapons such as the Disciplinary Action and Market Gardener cause it to be absolute crap compared to them.
