Fixing crashing and overall low FPS on your laptop or all-in-one
By Nuwang and 1 collaborators
An attempt at a little guide to help get people around the Optmius issue. This is for the most part only for mobility type video cards which Laptops and sometimes All-in-One computers will probably have if they have a video card.

The Issue
The issues seems to have worked is self out and just updating your drivers should fix the issue (tested on my laptop with an NVIDIA card). The guide should be uncecessary now as long as you update your drivers. I don't know if the issue is still there for AMD cards though and feedback on that would be great.
Alright so the big problem here are mobility cards and the way the game interacts with Nvidia Optmius or AMD Dynamic Switchable Graphics. Currently the game doesn't register as a program that needs to make use of your actual video card and will run off the integrated video graphics..

For nVidia Cards if your video card is on this list it has Optimus : http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/optimus/supported-gpus?field_gpu_type_value=All

Fixing the Problem for NVIDIA Optimus
1. Right click your desktop and select Nvidia control pannel

2. Select manage 3D settings

3. Under global settings you have a drop down that says:
Perfered Graphics Processor
this will likely say auto select which allows Optimus to take over.
You can leave it like this or change it to
High Performance Nvidia Processor
This will be a bit more power draining as everything will run off that video card now though so you can leave it as is. If you do this step however you are done

4. If you didn't want to change that then go to the Program Settings tab that right next to the Global Setting and hit the Add button.

5. Find rwby-ge or whatever the game is called, that's what it is on mine, and click add selected program button.

6. Now you should be able to select for that game to run off your
High Performance Nvidia Processor instead of the Auto-select: Integrated and make sure to save your changes.
Fixing the Problem AMD Dynamic Switchable Graphics
There are two modes in Catalyst Control Center: 'Power saving' and 'High Performance'. If 'Power saving' is selected for an application, then it uses Intel graphics card. If 'High Performance' is selected for an application, it automatically uses the AMD Radeon graphics card. You can configure it according to your preference. It is advisable that you choose 'High Performance' for application which uses more memory like games etc.
Here’s how you can configure it:

Click on ‘Start’
Click on ‘Programs’
Click on ‘Catalyst Control Center’
Click on ‘Power’
Select ‘Switchable Graphics’

Choose an application from the list or browse and select an application and assign the appropriate GPU such as High Performance, Power Saving
To assign any specific application, you can click on ‘Browse’ and look in the specific folder for .exe file

Click on 'High Performance' or 'Power Saving' under 'Recent Applications' to change association (In high performance mode, the system uses the AMD HD graphics processor for rendering the application. In power saving mode, the system uses the Intel HD graphics processor for rendering)

I don't know how up to date this is but it should hopefully still help people get a direction on what to try and do.

This site might be more up to date and might provide more overall information on AMD Switchable Graphics and how to work with it.

Additional FPS Fixes and Other Fixes
These are some other fixes that may or many not help you with low FPS and crashing.

1. Forcing DX9

Posted by Skilltacular

Try running the game in Direct X9 mode rather than Direct X11. Users have reported that this works for them.

1) In your Steam library Right Click RWBY
2) Select Properties
3) Click Set Launch Options
4) Input the following characters. DO NOT include the quotes!! "-force-d3d9"

If this one helps please leave a note below so the RT Devs know how much this is helping you guys.

2. Ports

If anyone is curious I looked at the ports and came out with 50443. This could possibly help with some connection issues that I've been seeing but I can't confirm it so if anyone tries it let me know below.
Other stuff
I just wanted to throw this together because I noticed a lot of people having this issue most of them are trying to run the game off a laptop. I and several other users have tried posting in threads about how to fix the issue but it always seems to keep coming back up so I felt putting some sort of guide up about the issue would be easier to find.

I might go back at some point and pretty things up but looks wasn't what I was going for.

Forcing DX9 worked for me. Before i was playing with 30 FPS on normal and now it's about 60 FPS. :rubyrose:

That dx9 stuff worked for me. Before I was running at standard graphics preset on 1680x1050 with 30fps which was pretty uncomfortable. But now I'm running at high preset with glow effect enabled, and surprisingly, i got stable 50-65fps.

My system is I5-3337U, 8GB DDR3-1600(dual-channel), nVidia GeForce gt740m(2GB-GDDR3 128bit) (clocked up to 1029MHz on the core and 1100MHz on the memory via MSI Afterburner), Win10Pro

i started the game back up later, and for some reason it's running really smooth now.(even before release). Not sure what was going on but other then what i said i did. i changed nothing. i no longer freeze/stutter. i only notice low FPS(about 30% of normal) when there are about 50mobs on screen lol, but that's about normal. as soon as about 5-10 die the FPS increases again. And i'm even running at max resolution and full screen.... Oh well. i can play and i'm happy now, more or less :steamhappy: I can't wait to see what else they add to the game!

So I tried the Forcing DX9 method and my fps greatly increased but for some reason my screen can't stop blinking, idk if this only happened to me but is there a resolution?

I think they really need to add a "Advanced" option for graphics on the game, so you can actually mess with Every setting yourself, and optimize it for Your PC.

Since i put this PC together, this is the First game i've played that i lag on. :steamsad:

I just bought the game and have played for about 30mins, and most of the time i'm freezing for a second or stutter all over the place, and it's not connection. as the same happens when i'm playing on single player. i looked at the Recommended specs for the game, and i'm on a desktop(windows 7) with equal to better specs(Nvidia Geforce GTX 750Ti, 16Gs of Ram, 4.2Ghz Quad-Core Proccessor). i followed this guide and it managed to help decently, as i can somewhat play thru the game now. But i STILL Stutter when using special attacks or walking into the next area(this ain't a, one time. ok it's smooth now. thing. it keeps happening), and it's like things jump around(i don't mean the character's flash step moves xD). i even used "-force-d3d9" (<-that helped) and went and turned Everything off/to max performance in my Nvidia settings for RWBY, And i had the game in window mode and at lowest resolution. and i have nothing else running on my PC.

Drop it from 1920x1080 to 1600x900, no graphics change or apearance, looks like 1080p res, only you get 300 fps from 12 fps. Enjoy.

ok, thx

Yea it's for an older issue that shouldn't be too much of an issue anymore. It was a serious problem that came out from Closed Beta into Early Access. The only poeple that should have problems with this paticular problem now are people who just never update their gfx cards and are within the specs for the game, and possibly AMD mobility cards just because I don't have info on if they are working now or not.
