What you need
  • Wiring Mode enabled
  • One normal door (not Saloon)
  • One Light Sensor
  • One Torch
The torch can be skipped, but the other three are essential.
How to place them
Place your door where ever you like, so long as it is fairly dark on one side. Place the Light Sensor on the dark side next to the middle of the door. If the door is shut and the Light Sensor is green, it isn't dark enough on the Sensor side. Wire the top node to the top of the door. You can open the door by standing next to it and holding the bulb of your Flashlight over the Light Sensor.
If you wish, place the Torch on top of, or next to, the Light Sensor. You can now keep the door open by leaving the Torch lit.

I don't mind this method, it could very easily secure one specific section of my base away from my colony tenants (anyone else get annoyed when you're trying to use your furnace and instead you end up talking to one of those losers). I'd just been building a wall and putting a small two brick tall gap in it for my ball form to slip through. I think it also makes things just a little ~*~ ominous ~*~

Or... Just lock it up with a switch since non-player entities can't use those

I prefer the classic method: put all your doors at the top of the wall and enter/exit via grappling hook. It's like a little mini-adventure every time to you go out to retrieve the mail!

@mobbstar They could. I had a base where I used scanners to detect monsters outside the door. If the scanners had been wired to the door, the monsters would have opened it. That is why automatic doors sometimes have locks.

It's funny how you don't have that much experience with the new NPC systems. Besides, can monsters actually open doors?

@catpetkid I heard a rumor about NPC's being able to interact with switches and other wiring devices. If this ever becomes reality, this door will keep things secure. I tried to indicate the future tense in my description.

@catpetkid, NPCs tend to press red big buttons. Sure, they won't walk through most times, but the door will open for a brief moment. You may want to keep it shut (say, an underwater airlock)
