Introduction

To play games like Fallout® you may find the need to induce yourself with one or more addictive substances. While short term or moderate use may be beneficial, long term use and addiction will always lead to negative and/or unexpected results. If your supply is low OR you had one too many, go see a doctor ASAP.

Clinical Trials

"The finest ingredients are brought together with love and care, then slow cooked to perfection. Yes, the old ways are still best in the Wasteland. But don't take my word for it. One taste, and you'll know."
#Buffout
Highly advanced steroid that was popularized before the Great War by professional athletes. Using too much buffout causes cardiac arrest, or even death. The pill tablet-shaped drug, typically contained in small bottles, increases Strength and reflexes, with the disadvantage of being highly addictive.

Chance of addiction: 10% (reduction in Strength, Endurance, and Agility)
#Jet
Extracted from brahmin dung fumes and administered via an inhaler. It immediately boosts the user's current Action Points, as well as raising their maximum action points. Jet is also one of the most addictive drugs.

Chance of addiction: 20%
#Med-X
Highly potent painkiller which, when injected, makes the user impervious to pain.

Effects: Damage Resiatnce +25%

Chance of addiction: 10%
#Mentats
Created by Med-Tek, they were designed to increase memory related functions and speed up other mental processes. These chalky red pills were a popular party drug once favored for the boost it gave to creativity.

Chance of addiction: 5 - 15%
#Psycho
Injected drug composed of strange, unknown chemicals of military origin, that increases a soldiers damage. This drug was very popular for human-wave assaults.

Effect: Damage +25%

Chance of addiction: 10%
#Rad-X
Anti-radiation chemical that can significantly reduce the danger of irradiated areas. Taking multiple doses of Rad-X does not increase the total radiation resistance. Instead, the drug's active time is lengthened.

Chance of addiction: none
#RadAway
Intravenous chemical solution that bonds with radiation particles and passes them through the body's system. it has several adverse effects, most notably headaches, stomach pains, and hair loss.

Chance of addiction: None
#Sleet
Rare pre-war substance also called Blue Sky.

Commonly referred to as 'Sleet', it is alleged to not exist in the Wasteland due to its scarcity. The valuable blue crystals are rumoured to be very addictive and may have adverse side effects upon heavy consumption. Studies have shown the following immediate effects: increased heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, appetite, attention, mood and emotional responses associated with alertness or alarming conditions.

The Chemical Formula is unknown. Distribution has been narrowed to a facility in New Mexico operated by cloned humans created by Vault Tec.
#Stimpak
When the medicine is injected, it provides immediate healing to minor wounds.

Effects: +12 to +20 HP

Chance of addiction: None
Addiction

Once addicted to a chem, the user has to either continue taking the chem or suffer withdrawal effects specific to the addiction. It is eventually desirable (if not necessary) to cure the addiction. To cure an addiction, the individual has several choices:

1. Wait it out. Quitting cold turkey will eventually purge the addict's system of the chem. However, Jet addiction cannot be shaken this way, nor can tobacco.
2. Seek out a wasteland doctor and pay them a fee to alleviate the addiction.
3. Purchase the My First Labratory:

My First Labratory

> Clears any addiction

> Creates one random consumable a day, out of the following:

• Buffout • Dirty water • Jet • Med-X • Mentats • Psycho • Rad-X • RadAway • Stimpak • Aqua Pura

Substances Abuse

Addiction to a substance means that one's body (or mind) is in need of a daily dose in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Certain items have an additional, increasing chance of addiction with each subsequent use. Internally, this effect is referred to as the Usage Monitor Effect, or UMON. Each use of an item adds its UMON value to the total UMON value before the addiction check is performed.

Just started Fallout 3 after loving fallout 4, and I've got to say I love the balancing in this game. I always feel like I have just enough to survive, and not much excess, which makes chems a very useful item, where in fallout 4 they just seem like extra things to sell or use before big fights. Balancing eating food that gives you rads, rad away, and trying not to use so many chems that you get addicted is pretty fun in this game, and your guide helps a lot. Thank you.

All these chems are also my "must have" inventory in Fallout 4... The trick is to moderate so you don't get addicted but it's going to happen. When you do, a great addition to F4 is the chem "Addictol". Keep those handy.
