A Guide to CS:GO Commendations

This is a guide not only on WHAT the commendation system of CS:GO is, but how to GIVE and EARN commendations correctly(in my humble opinion). Hopefully those 3 commendations sitting on your account will get some use after this!

The Commend System

What the commend system is:
Basically, every day you get 3 commends to give away. Commends are numerical thank-yous to the person they are given to. They all are given for different reasons, have a different meaning, and are earned different ways according to a witnesses belief.

How to give a commend
To give a commend to a player who in your opinion deserves it, follow these steps:

1. Enter a CS:GO Game
2. Find commendable user
3. Hold down Tab
4. Press right-click or your equivalent
5. Press left-click or your equivalent on the commendable players name
6. Select Commend
7. Choose categories that you believe the player is eligible in (if your not sure,read on!)
8. Press Accept

In this guide, I will hopefully teach you to fully use the tool of commends, something that I feel is massively overlooked in CS:GO….(and totally not because I only have 5 total ;c)

SMILEYS ☺ (also known as Friendly(s) to lame people)


What They Are
In its truest form, Smileys are a measure of how many times you have made someone’s day by simply being in the server with them and sharing the experience of that particular game, whether by being very amusing or just an extremely friendly person.

How Someone Earns Them

This is tricky, as everyone has their own opinion on who is Smiley-deserving or not…

SO, let me just leave it at this. If someone makes your day worth living, give that little box a check and let that person know how much you appreciate them.

How Valuable Are They

In my personal, honest opinion, I believe Smileys are the most valuable commend you can give to a person. Even though it’s just a number, it’s a number that has a story behind it, some experience that defines who you are on CS:GO. Each one of these is priceless, and should motivate you to be that person who earned a Smiley in someone’s mind,so much so that they actually took time out of their day to go to your CS:GO profile and check

√ Good Teacher!

Grad Hats (also known as Good Teacher(s) to lame people)

What They Are

Grad Hats are an achievement, in some way, that a person has been so kind as to take time out of their pWn1nG n00bL0rd$ to teach someone a mechanic of the game, whether it be as simple as how to change their Five-Seven to a CZ75-Auto (although why you would do that is beyond me) or how to throw a complex smoke grenade from spawn. Teaching others proper manners or how to clean up spilled salt that the enemy team may have dropped (:steamsalty:) also apply, in my opinion.

How Someone Earns Them

A individual earns a Grad Hat, in my opinion, if they are eager and willing to help some random person they just met learn a skill, whether it is advanced or not. Whether or not the person who was taught the skill or a person watching/listening to the teacher gives the commend is completely null. If you witness a person deserving a Grad Hat, what’s to stop you from thanking them both vocally and then non-vocally with a commend?

*This is the commend I see the least often, while almost every game I meet someone who I think is deserving of it. Just pay attention and hopefully you’ll see it too.

How Valuable Are They

Grad Hats in CS:GO are something that a player can be proud of. They mean that not only has that player helped another person, but that that player has learned a skill well enough to pass it on to another. If you think about it this way, a good teacher could also be a good leader, but not necessarily. Just keep that in mind the next time you check

Crowns (also known as Good Leader(s) to lame people)

What They Are

Crowns are awarded to players because they, in someone else’s mind, are a valuable communicationist and strategist. Players can do a multiple amount of things to earn this, so here is a small list to hopefully help distinguish being a good player from a good leader:

Leadership Traits in CS:GO:

• Has initiative to lead
  
• Making callouts each round (that make sense)
  
• Being a motivating force for the teams morale (a good guide on morale)
  
• Is resourceful with the economy, good or bad, of your team and incorporates that into the callouts
  
• Confident that the game is never over until one team hits 16 points
  
• Stays stable and dependable (basically not going on tilt)
  
• Understands they aren’t perfect, and takes feedback to improve

How Someone Earns Them

A player earns Crowns from leading. Not much else to say about that, except understand that leaders don’t always make perfect callouts or plays, but will be a positive force driving your team to victory.

How Valuable Are They

Crowns are very impressive, easily the most respectful commendation. If you strive for Crowns, I personally recommend loading up the current competitive maps and just running around, memorizing the names of places (top left corner of your screen) and definitely watching some professional players streams, just listening to whoever the in-game leader is and understanding WHY they called what they did. Of course, some of it is just natural ability, but with enough practice, hopefully others will be checking
