Easy Backups using Starcheat (Up to date 2020, 1.4)

How to make Character-backups so easy that even a Floran could do it.

Why?

Of course, there's a lot of reasons to back up your character, however it is important to do when playing on a public MP server. A lot of people wanna watch the world your character burn and after i lost a few myself, i started using this method to reduce those people to a minor inconvenience. Its also very useful for modders - backups can come in handy when installing and uninstalling large amounts of mods (or mods that fundamentally change the game).

Starcheat

This is what this guide is based on. It is an external tool, used to easily edit Characters in Starbound (You have to close Starbound before editing an Char). If you don't wanna be a "cheater", then just don't spawn any items.

The important part

After installing the assets (Starcheat will do that automatically), Open your character. In the Left corner there is an 'File' option. After clicking on it, you see some options but you will need only SAVE and RELOAD.

Technically actually saving, while recommended , isn't necessary, having Starcheat open in the background will suffice. Just make sure to remember to reload/save from time to time to have the newest version of your character backed up.

How to use the backup

You have two choices to load your character, depending on how you have used Starcheat.

If you Saved and closed Starcheat, simply load your character. Hope you remembered to save in the last 3 hours.

If you just left Starcheat open in the background, press save, close and open Starbound. DO NOT PRESS RELOAD before saving.

@Cynic is it really more practical long therm tho? Also nobody is really forcing you to use this guide, its meant to offer an alternative and i found this method really practical

or you could just open up your files and copy them to a safe place. No programs needed
