Chu Shogi

Chu Shogi is the most popular historical variant of Shogi other than the main nine by nine version that has survived until today. In fact, Chu Shogi is still being played in Japan and other countries today, with tournaments and commercially sold sets still available. It has been called the most well designed Great Chess game in the world being more enjoyable and interesting to play than most large variants.



Using a mnemonic piece set so that every piece shows the way it moves just by looking at it, it becomes easy to get into the Shogi world!

All you need to remember is that all pieces have a 3x3 grid around it, and that white spots is a single step, and lines are as many steps as you want!

Some pieces, like the Lion, Kylin, and Horned Falcon, have Igui moves (capture without moving). These are marked with circles. (Except for the lion, which is the only piece which can Igui in every direction.
