THE SCAM
Maybe someone added you who has no mutual friends with you. Something seems a bit off.

HOW CAN I TELL IF THIS PERSON IS A SCAMMER?
First, check on Steamrep[www.steamrep.com]. If other people have reported the trader for scamming, reports will show up on their Steamrep profile.

Other sketchy profiles:
  • PRIVATE PROFILES! First and foremost.
  • If their profile is not private, they either have zero hours in TF2 or very low hours in TF2. I see a lot of them with hours in Dota 2 or CS:GO.
  • More often than not, I see these profiles are in places other than North America.
  • Broken English and poor grammar is very common. They will often repeat words like dude, sir and mate.

HOW WILL THEY TRY TO PULL OFF THIS PARTICULAR SCAM?
For this scam, they try to get you to download a fake mumble client. They say you need the latest version to talk to them. They send you a link with mumble in the name and a legit looking website.

  • They will offer for you to play games with them and join them in mumble.
  • They will offer a spot in a raffle, and you need mumble to claim your prize.
  • They will offer you a spot on a team and you need to download the new mumble to talk to them.
  • Anything involving you downloading mumble from a site they link you.

HERE IS A SCREENSHOT OF THE FAKE MUMBLE SITE:

HERE IS A SCREENSHOT OF THE REAL MUMBLE SITE:

Please be aware that they might have a fake mumble site that looks like a real one. The best way to download mumble is by googling it or from sourceforge here[sourceforge.net].
I feel it's also important to note that people who use different versions of mumble can still talk to each other with no issues whatsoever.

Here is my experience with a well knownscammer named Penek[steamrep.com], who seems to be behind this particular website. I checked his steamrep shortly after the add and realized who it was. He was using an alternate account with low hours in every game. I was playing along and he got mad at the end when he realized he was wasting his time.

And here is another example, with a different fake mumble site:

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I DOWNLOADED THE FAKE MUMBLE CLIENT?
So far, people have reported that if you ran the fake mumble program after downloading, it trades your entire inventory to the scammer's account, usually a different one than what they added you with. Some of these fake mumble clients also might have keyloggers in them. Eiher way, your items are gone and you now have a virus.

WHAT IF I ALREADY GOT SCAMMED?
Q: Will Valve give my stolen items back?
A: Sometimes. I don't think there is a 100% success rate BUT there are lot of people who say that their items were returned.

Q: HOW CAN I GET MY STOLEN ITEMS BACK?
A: Screenshot everything and send a report to Valve. Sometimes it can take over a month to hear back from them, but they might be willing to work with you. Send as much information as you can to them. Describe what happened in detail. After that, post it on Steamrep.

Feel free to post any additional questions in the comments.

Happy, if you can, screenshot everything and send it to valve in a support ticket. SOMETIMES they do return lost items, but they usually do not respond to support tickets for at least a few weeks because Valve customer support is total dicks.
