How to profile your game

How to get your server or client connected to the Unity profiler, so you can see what's causing issues.

Setting Up Your Server

If you want to profile your server you need to download a "debug" version. This version isn't slow or anything, it just enables the profiler. To do this you need to download how you do normally, except using the branch "stable-debug". For example, our dedicated server update script looks like this

@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1
@NoPromptForPassword 1
login anonymous 
force_install_dir ../rustds 
app_update 258550 -beta stable-debug validate 
quit

You can change your release server to update to this version, and it shouldn't do any harm, and stay compatible with the live version.

Setting up your Client

To set your client up you just need to switch to the stable-debug branch.

Profiling

If you don't already have it, then download Unity[unity3d.com]. It's free.

Once installed open it up, you won't have a project, so just create a new one. Then go to Window > Profiler to open the profiler window.

If you're trying to profile your server then go to Active Profiler > Enter IP and enter its IP.

If you're profiling your client on the same computer, it will probably automatically connect. If not, select Active Profiler and choose the game.
