Dwagon answered 2 of the questions quite nicely.
1 AP grenades are amazing, think about it as a hardcore control AoE spell with limited charges per mission but quite cheap in AP. With the reduced cost you can throw 1 or 2 and still hit with your AP draining mele attack which creates an AP abyss between your team and the enemies, using that advantage well you can end a very nasty encounter easily. Also you will usually find extra grenades in the run so the charges aren't that limited.
About the other one: You don't need the mele ability with this build, it gives you some extra utility but only take it if you have the spare points, if you are short just STR and Close Combat
@TensorFlow
In the Low Essence build I was only talking about the "spells" you are gonna put into your spell slots, Chi focus doesn't use any slot and it's quite mandatory for the build. Mana Fist on the other hand is a pretty useless spell, the damage isn't that high and doesn't scale with STR or WIL so i don't recomend it.
To play this build you only really need Stride and Chi Focus. Magic Resistance and Martial Defense are two good defensive buffs but they aren't really necessary. I recommend taking both with Stride if you can but if i have to take 1 of them i'd take martial defense because there are more physical attackers than mages and the mages are quite easy to pick off anyway.
I am now on one of the last missions and so far guide was working just fine, before it turned out I didn't needed that Chi casting to upgrade to lvl 5, because I don't have a slot for Martial Defense, whilst others spells seem to be more useful.
Is Martial Defense better than Magic Resistance? Should I replace it?
1) 1 AP grenades are vastly superior to 2 AP grenades for a couple reasons, and both tie into Range. Being able to move and THEN throw a grenade improves your odds of hitting greatly, while reducing the odds of nuking yourself on accident.
Since I'm on the subject: Stun Grenades (that do AP damage) are VASTLY SUPERIOR to all other variants 95% of the time, since they offer massive Turn Advantage potential, even if you only do it once or twice a mission.
2) Biotech 2 shows you the enemy's HP, which makes optimizing your plays much easier for very little investment. It helps that INT skills, including Biotech, are good investments in Dragonfall already.
