Ancient Cost
Getting ancients requires Hero Souls, which are obtainable through ascensions.

Each ancient purchase re-rolls the ones available to purchase, but don't worry! You can always get them back by re-rolling again.

Every time you buy an ancient, the cost for ancients and re-rolls go up.

Removed Ancients
Removed ancients can no longer be available for purchase in game and can only be obtained by importing your save file from an older version.

Iris, Ancient of Vision
"This ancient grants you supreme vision beyond what your eyes can see. The longer you are awake the greater your powers become. Sleep has now become a hindrance to your path to what you desire. Sacrifices must be made."

+1 to starting zones available after Ascension. For example, if you buy Iris, you start with Zone 1 and 2 unlocked after ascending, and every level put into Iris will push a zone farther down.

(Was removed in patch 1.0)

Pluto, Ancient of Wealth

"You feel appriciated as you approach this monument. Your hard work and dedication start to pay off."

+30% gold from Golden Clicks per level.

(Was removed in patch 1.0)

Thusia, Ancient of Vaults
"Midas walks with you to greet this ancient, and shows you his purse. As you get closer, the cloth material the purse if made out of gets harder. Suddenly, you could swear it turned into leather. "Upgrading this ancient will probably make it harder to kill Treasure Chests. I would leave this one alone," Midas says. "It sounds worthless to me.""

Added HP to Treasure Chests while Golden Clicks was active.

(Was removed in patch 1.0)

Khrysos, Ancient of Inheritance
"What happens to your money when you die? Pass as much as you can to your offspring. There's a lot of gratification in knowing that it won't just go to some random jerk who certainly doesn't deserve it."

Khrysos would provide the player with some gold after ascending. For example, it's starting gold starting out would be just enough gold to buy Treebeast (50 gold) and maxing it out would be enough to buy Natalia (100M).

(Was removed in patch 1.0)
Name Meaning and Inside Jokes
Argaiv, Ancient of Enhancement, is Viagra spelled backward.

Atman, Ancient of Souls, refers to the Ātman, the soul/self in Hindu philosophy.

Berserker, Ancient of Rage, refers to the Nordic berserkers and their powerful battle-rage.

Bhaal, Ancient of Murder, is lifted from Forgotten Realms, where a deity of the same name is known as the Lord of Murder.

Bubos, Ancient of Diseases, refers to the bubonic plague.

Chawedo, Ancient of Agitation, may be a reference to a document entirely in anagram: "Chawedo Nujine", as this anagram is one to make most minds spin as it relates to no known language.

Chronos, Ancient of Time, refers to the Greek personification of Time (not to be confused with the Titan Kronos).

Dora, Ancient of Discovery, is a reference to the children's TV show, Dora the Explorer.

Dogcog, Ancient of Thrift, is a reference to one of the developers - doogog.

Energon, Ancient of Battery Life, could either be a reference to Energizer batteries or, more likely, to the fictional life energy of the Transformers.

Fortuna, Ancient of Chance, refers to the goddess of luck in Roman mythology.

Fragsworth, Ancient of Wrath, is simply the screen name of one of the game's creators.

Hecatoncheir, Ancient of Wallops, comes from the Greek word hekatonkheires which means "one hundred hands", presumably the instruments by which said wallops are delivered.

Iris, Ancient of Vision, refers to the Iris layer in the eye that dilates based on light in the environment and is colors such as green, brown, blue, or red in rare cases (and many more!).

Juggernaut, Ancient of Momentum, may refer to the definition, a huge, powerful, and overwhelming force, or the Marvel character in the X-Men series by the same name.

Khrysos, Ancient of Inheritance, appears to be derived from Chrysus, a spirit of gold in Greek mythology.

Kleptos, Ancient of Thieves, comes from the Greek kleptos, meaning thief (which also gives us kleptomania).

Kumawakamaru, Ancient of Shadows, is reference to the childhood name of Hino Kumawaka, a man who used stealth to avenge his father in 14th century Japan.

Libertas, Ancient of Freedom, refers to the Roman goddess of political liberty, separating the free from the enslaved.

Mammon, Ancient of Greed, represents greed, often personified as a deity or demon (one of the seven princes of Hell). Comes from the Aramaic word for "riches/money".

Mimzee, Ancient of Riches, refers to Mimzy for the movie The Last Mimzy.

Morgulis, Ancient of Death, comes from Valar Morghulis, Valyrian for "All men must die" in A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

Pluto, Ancient of Wealth, refers to the Roman god of wealth, Plutus (often confused/assimilated with Pluto, god of the Underworld), and from which we get the term plutocracy.

Siyalatas, Ancient of Abandon, Sounds like "See-ya-lata" when said. See you later means to leave or abandon, and leave to idle.

Sniperino, Ancient of Accuracy, is a reference to the word "sniper" - A skilled military shooter that spots and picks off enemy soldiers from a concealed place.

Solomon, Ancient of Wisdom, refers to King Solomon of ancient Israel.

Thusia, Ancient of Vaults, "thusia" in greek means "sacrifice".

Vaagur, Ancient of Impatience, comes from a reddit user named Vaagur who was very impatient about the 0.12 update.

Revolc, Ancient of Luck, is clover spelled backwards, which represents a sign of luck.

Nogardnit, spelled backwards, is a reference to TinDragon, an active moderator of the Clicker Heroes subreddit.
Notes
-The total cost to summon all of the ancients is 183161 Hero Souls.

-Vaagur, Ancient of Impatience is set to be in the first 4 ancients you will see so you can pick him up easily if you want him.

-When Pluto, Ancient of Wealth, gets to level 331, Golden Clicks give 100% of the current monster's gold per click. This can lead to very large profits when using Golden Clicks in conjunction with a Treasure Chest being on the screen. (This is no longer possible due to the removal of this ancient)

-Fragsworth, Ancient of Wrath, can help your click damage reach and pass your DPS if you level it up enough. It can also lead to very powerful critical hits.

-Late game, using Thusia, Ancient of Vaults may be useful as it takes long and longer to kill monsters and thus get chests, so each chest is valuable and should be Golden Clicked when possible. (This is no longer possible due to the removal of this ancient)

-Mimzee, Ancient of Riches will be vital in mid to late game progression as you begin to focus more on the rewards from chest you find than the monsters themselves.

-With Mimzee, Mammon, and Dora, Treasure Chests will make up most of your income, as they start giving out thousands of times more gold than the monsters themselves.

-If you plan to play the game using mostly idle effects, Chronos, Ancient of Time will help you get a few zone sets farther if leveled appropriately. Active based play can also benefit from this, but often don't need its help as much.

-Dogcog, Ancient of Thrift is used in most builds because he is inexpensive and is essentially a 2x gold multiplier (or higher) later on (makes your money go 2x or more as far). It also helps you reach the higher leveled heroes faster and essential for late game as the level up prices grow exponentially.

-Bubos, Ancient of Diseases may not mean much early game, but late game, removing 50% or more of the bosses HP can help speed up a run greatly or help you get that next floor achievement.

-Idle mode is activated when you don't activate an ability or click the monster for one minute straight.

-Sniperino, Ancient of Accuracy is very useful for those who use an autoclicker or aim to focus intensely on the game as it will allow you to land tens of criticals per second.

-With Khrysos, Ancient of Inheritance at maxed level and Dogcog, Ancient of Thrift at mid to high level you can buy Natalia, the Ice Apprentice to level 2, or buy Cid, Treebeast, Ivan, Birttany, and The Wandering Fisherman enough to acquire all of their abilities. (This is no longer possible due to the removal of this ancient)

-Solomon, Ancient of Wisdom may be costly to upgrade in the higher levels, but the boost in Hero Souls is substantial and highly suggested for anyone going past floor 250, as you will notice the increase in Hero Souls per ascend and make your progress go faster.

-If you wish to get to floor 99, (as to not lose the 1 Hero Soul from Zone 100) level Iris, Ancient of Vision to level 97. (This is no longer possible due to the removal of this ancient)

-A suggestion for Iris, Ancient of Vision, is to wait for an object to appear on the ground (The things you can click on to get bonus gold, like the orange fish) before ascending, then clicking on it as soon as you have ascended, as they give money based on the highest level. Thus you can easily then buy heroes and start your run almost instantly. (This is no longer possible due to the removal of this ancient)

Finally updated! :beatmeat: Sorry if I've been lazy and I let this project hang back a bit... but I finally updated it to the most recent update, and I'm hoping that in the future, I can add the outsiders and get a little description of all the different ancients.

When you ascend, you normally start at Zone 1, but every time you level up Iris, when you ascend, you then start a zone 2. For example, if you were to ascend with a level 10 Iris, you would start at zone 11. Hope this helps!
POD7 Feb 9, 2016 @ 8:55am
What does Iris actually do? "+1 to starting zone" means what, exactly?
