Starting Off

How to start up GTA Online?

Note: To access GTA Online, you have to complete the Prologue in story mode.

To launch GTA Online on Steam, click Play and you will get a window where you can select either GTA V singleplayer or GTA Online. Choose GTA Online and the game will load you straight into it.

Alternative methods:

Open up the character switching wheel out of which you can pick the bottom character which should be blank. This will take you to GTA Online.

Go into pause menu, select Online and jump straight into an activity of your choice or just join the freeroam.

How do I create a Rockstar Social Club account?

To create a Rockstar Social Club account, visit the Social Club website and create a new account. Follow the instructions they give, pick the name carefully as it will also be used as your username in GTA Online.

Character Creation and Modifications

How many characters may I have?

You can currently have 2 Online characters.

How does the heritage system work?

When you create an Online character, you have to pick an appearance. This is done by using GTA Online's heritage system which lets you choose what your parents looked like. Choosing your parents influences whichever visual properties your character will get. Face structure and skin color will change depending on your parents. You can move sliders around to choose which parent affects your genes more, thus making your character look more similar to that specific parent.

Can I change my character's face, gender or skin color later on?

No, you cannot change your character's face, gender or skin color later in the game, so pick those carefully when creating a character.

What kind of customization options does my character have?

You are able to change your character's hair style, facial hair style, face paint, clothing and tattoos. The selection within these categories is not big when you're just starting out, but ranking up will unlock a huge selection of these customization options.

Leveling, Cash, and Unlocks

What is the bank account used for?

Bank account is used to store your money and keep it safe. Money from your bank account cannot be stolen, nor tampered with in any way. You also share your bank account balance on all your Online characters, so you can make money on one character and use it on another.

How do I make money?

To make money, you have to take part in any of the GTA Online activities. Each activity earns you a different amount of money, depending on how long it lasts and how many players are participating. Missions are the most popular way of making money, especially high level ones. Missions pay out fairly evenly, depending on their difficulty and the time it takes you to complete them, so looking for a particular mission to farm is not advised. Just play a playlist or cycle through missions yourself, have some variety going on so you don't get bored.

Doing Daily Objectives is a good way to make easy money. (See Daily Objectives in GTA Online Activites (Jobs) section.)

You can also earn money by selling stolen cars and robbing stores, but these are less effective methods.

How do I level up?

To level up, you have to earn experience from Online activities. The best way to level up is by doing Jobs, that include missions, races, deathmatches and many other modes. However, you can also gain smaller XP values from freeroam activities and things like stunt jumps.

When I level up and unlock new items, do I still have to purchase them?

Yes, when you level up, you only unlock new items. To actually own them, you have to purchase them.

For example, if you've unlocked new weapons, you have to travel to the Ammunation and purchase these weapons. Once you will purchase a weapon, you will also unlock an upgrade menu for that weapon. You might need to level up more or do some other tasks and challenges to unlock the upgrades.

Why do I need to level up?

Leveling up in GTA Online is essential, because it gives you access to a lot of new content. You get access to new clothing, vehicles and vehicle upgrades, weapons and weapon upgrades, new missions and other activities, new customization options and a lot more.

GTA Online Activities (Jobs)

Races

There are different types of races (Land Races, Bike Races, Water Race, and Air Races) which all yield money and experience points based on each player's performance.
In addition to these 4 standard modes, players can create their own races using the GTA V content creator.
GTA: Online races (PC version) can be played with up to 30 participants who can, based on the racing settings, either use their own or a preselected vehicle.

Golf

Where can I play Golf?

To play the Golf activity, go to Los Santos Gold Club in Richman, it is marked by a flag next to a hole on your minimap/map. Walk into marker near the front entrance to start a game. You can invite your friends into the game once you're loaded into the Golf lobby.

What do I have to do in Golf activity?

Playing golf is pretty simple. You have to get the ball into a hole using the least swings possible. Each hole has a specific amount of swings it takes to get to it without losing points, this is called "par". If it takes more than par amount of swings, you get a point for every extra swing it takes for you to get the ball into a hole. If it takes less swings than par, you get a negative point, your goal is to have as many negative points as possible.

Tennis

Where can I play tennis?

There are multiple tennis courts in GTA Online, you can find them by looking for a tennis racket icon on your minimap/map. Once you pick the court where you want to play, walk into the marker to start the game.

Daily Objectives

What are Daily Objectives and when do I unlock them?

They are unlocked at Rank 15. Players will receive Cash and RP rewards for completing all 3 given objectives each (real life) day.

An additional large cash and RP bonus can be earned for completing all daily objectives for 7 days straight, and then an even larger award for completing them 28 days straight. Objectives are found on the player's Interaction Menu. Each title update will add a host of new objectives to complete at random.

What are the rewards for doing Daily Objectives?

Daily:

Stunt Jumps

How many stunt jumps do I need to unlock vehicle upgrades such as chrome paint?

You need 50 stunt jumps, this is easy to achieve by doing races that feature stunt jumps on their course.

Store Robberies

How do I rob a store in GTA Online?

To rob a store you have to walk into a store, take out a weapon of your choice and point it at the cashier. You can yell into your microphone or shoot things around the cashier to speed the process up.
Note: Sometimes cashiers can defend themselves with a pistol or a shotgun, shotguns can kill you very fast, so be careful.

How much money do I get from robbing a store?

You can expect around $200-$2000, this may vary depending on the store.

How many wanted stars do I get from robbing a store?

If you do not shoot the cashier or anything around the cashier, you will get 2 wanted stars. If you will shoot the cashier or damage anything around the cashier, you will get 3 wanted stars.
Note: Some stores have a quicker response from police, so have a getaway plan ready. To help escape quickly from the LSPD it is advisable to wear a mask, once you have completed the robbery remove your mask when you have left the store to lose 1 wanted star.

Survival

What do I do in Survival?

You have to survive 10 waves of enemies. You will need to find a place where you can hold out, because it's very hard to survive in the open. Every wave the difficulty will increase, enemies will have better weaponry and will come in greater numbers.

How can I access new survival missions?

Leveling up will unlock new survival missions.

Missions

How do I play missions in GTA Online?

You have to accept an invite to a mission, get a call from a contact, or visit a marker on the map to activate a mission. You can also play missions from the Online menu. It is advised to have someone helping with missions, they can be pretty challenging at times.

Can I repeat missions that I've previously completed?

Yes, Online missions offer full replayability. Playing a mission for the first time yields a double amount of cash and XP.

Bounty Hunting

When you see a red skull icon on the minimap or your map, it's a person with a bounty of their head. Track them down and kill them to obtain the bounty. Money is received instantly, you don't have to cash it in anywhere.

How do I set a bounty on someone?

To set a bountry on someone, have a rank of 10 and talk to Lester. Once this is done, bring up your phone and go to contacts, call Lester and set a bounty on a player within your lobby. The bounty will carry on with them even if they leave the lobby.

You can also obtain a bounty by stealing a car in GTA Online freeroam. The more valuable the car, the higher the bounty (either $1000, $3000, $5000, $7000, or $9000).

What happens if nobody claims the bounty that is set on me?

If a Bounty target manages to survive long enough, the bounty reward will instead go to them for surviving the duration of the bounty.

Freeroam activities

Gang Attacks

Players roaming the open world may stumble upon an AI gang hideout - if you trespass, you'll get shot at in a hurry. You have to defeat all enemies in the location to claim the loot, which may include cash, ammo and other spoils.

Armored Vehicles

You may stumble upon an armored vehicle roaming around, they always carry cash in them. Plan your attack carefully, because the police response times are quick.

Car delivery

Simeon may send a list of vehicles that he wants delivered to him and he will reward you with cash. You might also find a vehicle that he wants to be quickly delivered to him, it's marked with a green icon on the map. Everyone in the lobby will see it, so you might be in a hurry once all the players will arrive to get this vehicle.

Protection services

Lester will sometimes contact players and request that they distract the police (keeping them away from Lester's criminal colleagues).

Sabotage

Lamar can call you up and ask you to destroy certain vehicles for him.

Aerial Guardian

Trevor and Ron may be asking for help in destroying rival planes in the air.

GTA Online Heists

What do I need for heists?

In order to be able to do heists, you have to be at least Rank 12 and have a team of 4 players. If you want to be the heist leader, you will need a high-end apartment (with a 10-car garage) that has a planning room and you will need cash to pay for the setup missions. Heist leaders have to pay for all the costs of setup missions and they only get their money after they'll finish the final mission which is the actual heist. However, heist leaders can determine how much money is everyone going to get. All other team members get paid for every part of the heist.

Note: It is advised to have microphones or some other form of quick communication. Heists can be done without communication, but it makes it a lot harder as they're designed so that players work as a team.

How many heists are there in total?

There are currently 5 heists. However, the first one is more like a tutorial heist, it's a bit shorter than the rest of them.

How do I unlock and purchase heist related items in freeroam?

Completing heists or their setup missions will unlock certain equipment, vehicles, weapons, clothing and other items. To purchase these items, visit the clothing shop for clothing, mask shop for masks, Ammunation for special gear like rebreather, nightvision and other items. Vehicles can be ordered by going into your browser from your phone and ordering them from Elitastravel, Legendarymotorsport, Southsanandreassuperautos and Warstock Cache & Carry.

What happens if a team member dies during a heist?

If you or another member of your team dies, the amount of lives will be reduced by one. If all lives are used up, the Heist will fail and you get the option to either restart or quit the Heist.

What happens if our heist fails? Will we come away empty-handed?

If you fail the heist, you will not lose progress or money. You can just restart the mission. However, there are checkpoints throughout some of the missions, so you might not even need to restart the whole thing every time.

Bonus Challenges:

• First Time:
  Completing each Heist Finale for the first time, will net you a bonus cash reward.
  
• All In Order Challenge:
  Complete all Heists in order, including Setups, to receive a $1,000,000 cash bonus.
  
• Loyalty Challenge:
  Complete all Heists, including Setups, with the same team of players to receive an additional $1,000,000 bonus.
  
• Criminal Mastermind Challenge:
  Complete all Heists, in order, with the same group of players, without losing any lives, to receive a massive $10,000,000 bonus.

Crews

Which advantages does a membership in a crew have?

Playing with crew members gives you +10% RP bonus from all Jobs you do together. If you play with a friend who's also in the same crew as you are, both of you will receive +30% RP bonus.

How many crews can a player be in?

You can be in up to 5 different crews at once. However, only one of them can be your active crew.
When you earn RP from Jobs or other activities, it also adds that RP to your Active Crew Rank, so if you want to rank up within your crew and unlock crew-exclusive features, you must set that crew as your Active Crew.

How many members can a crew have?

A crew can have up to 1000 members.

Is there an integrated crew-only chat or do we need to use an external tool?

You can go to your Interaction Menu and switch between Voice-Chat options.
No-one, Crew, Friends, Crew + Friends, or Everyone.

How can one identify a fellow crew member?

You can identify your crew members by looking at the crew tag next to their name or by looking if they have a crew-colored circle around their minimap dot.

Vehicles, Insurance, and Tuning

What's the difference between stealing and purchasing a car?

You might get a bounty set on you for stealing a car and you cannot reclaim a stolen car if it's destroyed. (Unless it was insured by you.)
Note: There are limitations preventing you from insuring some stolen cars. Read below for further information.

How can I insure my car?

Cars purchased from a website are automatically insured. Stolen cars can be insured at Los Santos Customs.
Note: Not all stolen cars can be insured or modified as they are "too hot". This mostly applies to very expensive, rare, or some old cars.

How can I get back an insured vehicle after it was destroyed?

To make a claim, you will need to call the insurance company (Mors Mutual). You can find it in your phone's contact list.
After doing so, they will replace your car for a small fee which depends on the car's purchasing price.

What happens if another player destroys my vehicle?

If another player destroys your vehicle, you will be able to make a claim to the insurance company and get it replaced. The replacement fee will be paid by the player who destroyed your vehicle (given they have enough money).

How do I customize my vehicle?

You can customize your vehicle at Los Santos customs, it is marked as a spray icon on the minimap.

Some of the vehicles I bought Online are not in my garage, where are they?

Some of the purchased vehicles will be available through a contact in your phone, called Pegasus. Order your vehicle for a small fee and it will spawn in one of the selected locations around the map.

Selling (Stolen) Cars

In GTA Online it is possible to sell (stolen) cars to Los Santos which is marked as a spray icon on the minimap. The payout for cars varies depending on car type, condition, and modifications. Usually the payout is a lot less than the actual price you would have to pay for the same car when you were to purchase it.

Limitations:

• You can only sell one vehicle per in-game day which equals 48 minutes real-time.
  
• Expensive stolen cars cannot be sold as they are "too hot".

Real Estates

Which kinds of apartments are there in GTA Online?

There are different apartment tiers in GTA Online which each have their own facilities and come with garages of different sizes.
There are 2-car (+1 bike) garage apartments with cheap furniture and very little space, 6-car (+2 bikes) garage apartments with medium size and better furniture than the 2-car garage apartments, and there are 10-car (+3 bikes) garage apartments with luxury facilities, an office, panorama view, and lots of space. All apartments also contain a wardrobe where you can change your character's clothes to the clothing items you already own.
Prices of apartments vary between 80k $GTA for a lower-tier and 500k $GTA for a high-end luxury apartment.

What are the advantages of having a 10-car garage apartment?

Other than the obvious advantage of having storage for up to 10 cars and 3 bikes, heists will require the group leader to own a 10-car garage apartment as it contains a planning room that is needed to prepare the heist.

How many apartments can I own at once?

Currently you can own 3 apartments at once.

Can I resell apartments or even sell them to other players?

When buying a new apartment, you can choose to reduce the cost by selling another apartment that you own. You cannot sell apartments to other players.

Who can enter my apartment?

Only you and players that you've given permissions to access your apartment will be able to enter it while you're online.

I cannot shoot within my apartment? Why is that?

Apartments are safezones which is why you're unable to shoot or hit other players within your apartment.

Can multiple players own the same apartment?

Players can own the same apartment, but each player owns his own instance of the apartment. So while they are in the same location, they are in two separate apartments.

Camera Features

• Picture editor:
  This allows you to edit your pictures, add text and change filters.
  
• Filters:
  Filters are used for more advanced photography and mood setting. They mostly change saturation, brightness, color schemes and other camera settings.

Mechanic is not available to bring my car to me, why?

You might be in an unreachable area or too close to your vehicle or your garage. If you're close to your vehicle or garage, move away further and try again. If you're in an unreachable area, move somewhere closer to a flat area or a road for instance.

Where are my pictures stored?

All pictures you take with your phone in-game are saved to your Social Club profile. You can access them in-game and from the Social Club website.

Penalties

What happens if I die in GTA Online freeroam or in an activity?

If you die in GTA Online freeroam mode, you drop a small amount of cash. You respawn nearby to the death location and a small hospital fee is deducted from your wallet or bank account.

Missions have limited amounts of lives for the whole team. Total deaths within your session cannot exceed that amount if you want to complete the mission successfully. If your team exceeds the amount of deaths allowed within a mission, it will fail and you'll have to try again, choose another mission, or go back to freeroam.

What happens if I get arrested in GTA Online?

You cannot get arrested in GTA Online, police will chase you down and shoot you even with 1 wanted star.

What if my vehicle is impounded by the police?

Your vehicle can be impounded by the police into their parking lot if you get killed by the police. It will be marked as a white car icon on your map and minimap. You can pay a small fee of $250 to re-acquire the impounded vehicle or retrieve the vehicle without paying, resulting in a two-star wanted level in the process.

What is the Bad Sport/Good Sport system and how does it work?

Players who consistently drop from Online activities, destroy player vehicles and cause other unsanctioned mayhem or simply get reported/voted off a Job, will be quickly labeled as Bad Sports. Bad Sports are placed into isolated lobbies where they can only interact and participate in Online activities with other Bad Sports. The first Bad Sport designation reportedly lasts two days with subsequent banishments increasing duration of time in bad sport lobbies.

Good Sports are the opposite, they occasionally receive 5% discounts at in-game stores and $1000 payouts for avoiding destroying player vehicles or dropping out of Jobs mid-mission.

Am I forced to buy Shark Cards at any point in the game?

You are not forced to buy Shark Cards at any point, there are lots of good methods of making money, check out Leveling, Cash and Unlocks section of this F.A.Q. to find out more.

Where will money from Shark Cards be stored?

Money will appear in your Bank account, so you can choose which characters to use it on.

Can other players steal cash purchased through Cash Cards?

Players cannot steal any money from your Bank account (which is where it's stored at first), but if you transfer it to your wallet, you can lose small amounts of money in a lot of different ways.

Miscellaneous Information

Is Rockstar Social Club still required if I purchase the game from Steam?

Yes, Rockstar Social Club is required in order to play GTA V and GTA Online, regardless of where you purchased the game.

What exclusive content do I recieve as a returning player?

If you have previously played GTA V on PS3 or Xbox360, you can register your GTA V copy and link it with your Rockstar Social Club account to receive access to the following Returning Player features:

Can I play together with friends who play GTA Online on a console?
