Ultrasonic Emitter

Description
  • Adds the Ultrasonic Emitter to the game as a trainable unit, not just a special Cargo option when beginning a game.
  • All stats remain the same, except: it gains a production cost of 80, it's obtained by researching Ecology, and capturing it no longer rewards a Worker unit.

This unit is normally unlocked as a special Cargo option when you play the cool new Firaxis game, Sid Meier's Starships. I didn't create any of the art for this unit or its abilities; I just tweaked the XML associated with it.

I thought it would be neat to be able to build these things, so I created this mod. Ecology seemed like the most fitting choice since it already contained the Ultrasonic Fence and anti-alien miasma clearing. I gave it a higher production cost of 80 (equal to a combat rover; for another comparison, marines cost 50) since these units can be very beneficial against aliens.

They're support units without any attack or defense of their own and can stack with other combat units, like marines or explorers. They reduce the health of all aliens within a two tile radius by 10, which is pretty deadly. They can also be useful for combating colossal aliens, like the Siege Worm (which can allow you to complete the quest earlier than usual while the yield reward is still relevant).

They're balanced by their higher production cost, slow movement speed of 1, immediately being destroyed if attacked, and because multiple Ultrasonic Emitters don't stack their damage -- it's always 10.

Also, another change I made was removing the Worker rewarded for "capturing" these units. I don't think there's really a need for it (I'm not a fan of the worker capturing mechanic anyway) and I don't want the AI to be taken advantage of.

:( looked for a starship troopers mod where there is an extra emphasis on killing bugs with new unit sprites but Sid Meier's Starships, and there is no starship trooper mod

I believe it just damages them, no repelling effect.

Cool!
Does it have the effect on top of the 10 damage what the ultrasonic fence has? So does it also repell aliens (now with a probability) or just kill them? It would be cool if it would also repell them!

@mine_man yeah, i find it annoying that you can only expand Ultrasonic Fences' range via a quest and giving up trade units protection against aliens

Starships isn't needed.

Do you need Starships to use this unit or if I have the mod can I unlock the unit without buying Starships?

@zombiemoses "They reduce the health of all aliens within a two tile radius by 10, which is pretty deadly." and no, unlike alot of the internets opinion lol, the only stupid questions are the ones that are never asked because they can make all the difference.

Does this actually repel the aliens or does it just do damage over time? I hope that isn't a stupid question, but it wasn't explicitly mentioned.

They're all 1 movement.
