Getting Started
So you are going about your prison, you just got a truckload of prisoners, WHEN SUDDENLY...

A wild prisoner with an unknown reputation appears!

you quickly search through the tabs at the bottom to find something to reveal the reputation of this prisoner, after all who knows what havok he could bestow upon your beloved prison? you reach the Information tab, and find a button that says, "Inforamants" on it, in your haste, you click on this mysterious thing, and before your eyes appears this.

ok, imagine it without the prisoner names there, for now, congrats! you've reached the informants tab, from here you can hire informants! however, you can't just go off and hire prisoners without something for them to gain, no, they need a reason, something that they are willing to get out of, for them to become backstabbers to their fellow inmates. i am of course talking about inmates who have been recently admitted into solitary, withdrawl from drugs/alcholhol helps too. Those willing to get out will have a yellow circle around them, after finding said prisoner, all you need to do is click on them while in the Informants tab, go to experience, and click "recruit informant" (or something along those lines) congratulations! you should now have a tab similar to the picture above. however, Informants require a bit of relocation before giving information...
Obtaining Information
After hiring an informant you must summon them to your security office, this is done with clicking on the button next to the prisoner's name in the informants tab, it should go from idle, to on route, to active. Once the inside the informant will become active, giving you valuable information about who has contraband, when it will be exchanged, where it will be exchanged but most importantly, what reputation your various prisoners have, i will refer you to this link: http://forums.introversion.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=50279 for the list of reputations and what they mean. However, some reputations are already known, for example, the legendary reputation. A prisoner who has legendary reputation will have a potent and quite possibly dangerous mix of other reputations, so these prisoners should be put under supermax security immediatly. Luckily though, these legendary prisoners only appear when you decide to take on high security prisoners, so be wary when taking on high sec. On the other hand, your informant might reveal that some prisoners have a bad reputation among inmates (most commonly the ex law enforcement inmates.), as such their lives are most likely in danger! You will be notified of this by the red crosshair that appears on them in the informants tab, these prisoners should be placed under protective custody ASAP. However, don't think that your informants are immune to any dangers. Now your informants will only have a percentage of coverage over the entire prison, as of Alpha 25, informants have a normal ceiling of 50% coverage per informant, but can be raised above 50% the longer they are active, or the longer they are in your prison, unhired informants who have been there for a VERY long time will have a higher percentage, so it's a GREAT idea to hire them when possible. Now let's go over the dangers to your informants...
The Dangers to Informants
As we all know nobody likes a snitch, as such after being summoned to the security office other inmates will become suspicious of your informants' activities, if the other inmates become too suspicious they might be inclined to attack this prisoner, as such, he must be put under protective custody ASAP, be careful though, once your CI is under protective custody, other prisoners will not speak to him, and thus his coverage will not go up (thanks xN1NjAxSHOTSx for this information.) once suspicion becomes too high, your informant will not be as effective as he once was as everyone will be too suspicious of him to give him information. To be discreet about this, it's wise to summon your informants during freetime, since noone is really going to care about who is where at freetime, but even then suspicion might rise for some reason the above tactic barely reduces your informants chances of being noticed, so hire as many informants as you can and summon them at different times, for some reason if they're summoned when new prisoners arrive, that will help, (thanks Lazymoo for this information) if all of your informants' suspicion becomes way too high let them go for a few days so the suspicion dies down and they can get back to work. To help reduce suspicion I've found that you can summon your informant of choice to the security office, pause time, find where the contraband is and mark it in planning, you can then deactivate the CI and act on the information, this really helps counteracting suspicion.
Conclusion
I hope my guide has helped you with keeping your prison, and your pisoners, safe. if there is something i missed, feel free to let me know, anyway, I'll see you laters!!

I found a neat little "cheat" to avoid the consequences for the most part. I recruited every single potential CI I could, which was a lot. (I think I'm playing the game wrong because I have over 200 prisoners and end up with easily 20-30ish people in solitary every few days.) After doing that, I brought EACH informant to the Security room and followed each lead. This created several targets at Max Suspicion. I let them go back all at the same time. While doing this, I recruited MORE CIs from the people that just got caught with weapons/drugs/etc and repeated the same thing. With so many Max Suspicion prisoners running around, I think the other prisoners didn't know who to attack or the newer Max Suspicions would get their attention off of the others and it repeated like a vicious cycle.

FYI... I played a downloaded prision, and there were 10-15 with 100%. In my own game of 70 odd days, I only have 1 @ 100%, others vary. Depends on length of stay in your prision, reputation, how much they mix with others, from when you make them a CI. Put all newbies into solitary 10+ hours for minimum offences, check their rapsheet and make as many as possible CIs.

Alright thank you. Now I wish there was some way to find the ones that have been around for a long time.
