1099 A.D. - The First Crusade

The summer of 1099 A.D., right after the First Crusade. The Eastern Roman Empire has been slowly recovering under the rule of the Emperor Alexios Komnenos from the disastrous battle of Manzikert 30 years prior. The Islamic world has been weakened by the victorious crusade, and Christian reconquests in Iberia and Anatolia, however, the still strong Seljuk and Almoravid Empires are holding the line. In Western Europe, the Normans have consolidated their rule over the English, and along with the Holy Roman Empire pose a great threat to the yet to centralise French Kingdom of the Franks. With other events like the Norman conquest of Sicily and the Hungarian inheritance of Croatia, Europe is in a period of great change.
