Here is the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm!


She was the fourth ship of the Swedish America Line to be named Stockholm. She was built to replace the 2 previous Stockholms that were never delivered (the 2nd Stockholm caught fire mid construction, and the 3rd was bombed during WW2 after being sold to Italy once she was completed). Stockholm gained her fame when she collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria on July 25th, 1956. Although her bow was severed, she was in no danger of sinking, and she helped in evacuating those onboard the sinking Andrea Doria. After the Andrea Doria sank the following morning, Stockholm arrived in New York under her own power. Her bow was rebuilt, and she continued service until 1960 when she was sold to East German company, Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (which is today AIDA Cruises). Renamed Völkerfreundschaft, she served until 1985 where the ship was used as a barracks ship in Norway. In 1989, Italian company Star Lauro Lines purchased her to have her reconstructed into a cruise ship. The rebuilt was completed in 1994 and the ship would now see a second life as a cruise ship. She was sold to many companies throughout her career, going under different liveries and names. In 2016, she was sold the final time to Cruise & Maritime Voyages, where she was renamed Astoria. In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, she was arrested by UK authorities. Her owners entered administration and ceased operations, and Astoria was laid up in Rotterdam. She was put up for sale, but after 5 years without a buyer, she was purchased by a Belgian company for scrapping. She was towed to Ghent in 2025, where she is currently awaiting scrapping. After 77 years of service, Stockholm was the last Swedish America Liner in service, and one of the longest serving ocean liners in history.
