Here is the Dutch ocean liner SS Nieuw Amsterdam, and her predecessor from 1905!


SS Nieuw Amsterdam was built for the Holland America Line in 1938, and was the largest ship in the company's fleet. She was originally named Prinsendam during construction. She proved to be a very popular ship among many passengers, but her service was cut short by the start of WW2. When Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, Nieuw Amsterdam, which was still laid up in New Jersey at the start of the war, was requisitioned by the Ministry of Transport in Britain and she would be used as the troopship for the remainder of the war. She was returned to the Holland America Line after the war, where she received a refit. She returned to transatlantic service in 1947, and served until 1973. She was scrapped the following year.

The first Nieuw Amsterdam of 1905 was built by Harland & Wolff, and like her successor, was the largest ship operated by the company at the time. During WW1, she continued serving as a passenger ship until she, and many other Dutch ships were seized by the United States upon their entry into the war. After the war she was returned to Holland America where she served until the Great Depression. She was sold to Japan for scrapping in 1932.
