Fen's Zerg Species: Pre-Release

Description
this mod is in early access, you will see a LOT of placeholders, see change notes for the most recent info

22.05.25 - 0.12 Update
bit of a reset in this latest patch, full explanation is in the change notes but the TLDR: removed a lot of half finished and experimental portrait sets to make a smaller, but complete, roster that is ready for your games.

Description & Goals
when biogenesis came out i knew i needed my favourite space bugs to forcibly evolve into planet eating behemoths, so here they are - styled to (sort of) match the 2D stellaris style.

for the 1.0 release, this summer, all the empty slots on the steam images will be filled up. all of the core zerg units will be here, along with kerrigan, zagara, and abathur. beyond portraits, here's a list of content i plan to include:

  • room sets: at least the leviathan and a zerg hive scene
  • hivemind civics: i have some loose ideas for a flavoured version of devouring swarm, based on gathering species traits from your victims, and another focused on managing many specialised species - the entire swarm's roster under one empire. one will be for playing wide, the other tall. think of them as the swarm assimilating by force, or as locking abathur in the evolution pit with all the genetic samples he'd ever need.
  • species traits: a lot of small and cheap buffs to go alongside the trait collecting civic. some species-locked traits too - representing the starcraft upgrade options.
  • & of course, the zerg flag.

as if this isn't overly ambitious enough for my first mod - i also have some stretch goals. primarily events. as an example scenario; if you settle your species on a low habitability frozen world there would be a chance for you to assimilate the local fauna, gaining the Ursadon's Essence trait across all of your empire's species for a small habitability bonus. This would likely tie in to the trait collector civic.

more stretch goals include a shipset, since people have been asking. if it happens though it will require BioGenisis - as they'll be a biological set for sure. also adding some small sub factions, like the primal zerg or the infested. it all depends how sick of blender i am by the time this project is finished lol

Comment your ideas!
leave portrait, room, and any other suggestions in the comments. if you see something that looks off - like dodgy alignment or an error in one of my renders, also let me know - fixes are easy, testing every portrait in every menu is not.

I love this idea. Any chance they'll be a starcraft 1 version with the over-mind? I've always preferred sc1's art style. That said, thank you so much.

Centurion, & Fell Mor, thank you both for the encouragement, I hope you enjoy everything I've finished so far

@Hidabat thanks for sharing your ideas! I have a very similar plan for a challenge origin, where there are several warring broods - similar to the start of heart of the swarm. I like the idea of the infestation style invasion scenario too

Fantastic, I thought of EXACTLY this when Biogenesis came out, i was saddened to realize no one had made it yet. We will watch your career with great interest.
